▼ Innovative technologies using surfactant materials have applicability in several industrial fields, including petroleum and gas areas. This study seeks to investigate the use of a surfactant derived from coconut oil (SCO saponified coconut oil) in the recovery process of organic compounds that are present in oily effluents from petroleum industry. For this end,
experiments were accomplished in a column of small dimension objectifying to verify the influence of the surfactant SCO in the efficiency of oil removal. This way, they were prepared
emulsions with amount it fastens of oil (50, 100, 200 and 400 ppm), being determined the great concentrations of surfactant for each one of them. Some rehearsals were still accomplished with produced water of the industry of the petroleum to compare the result with the one of the emulsions. According to the experiments, it was verified that an increase of the
surfactant concentration does not implicate in a greater oil removal. The separation process use gaseous bubbles formed when a gas stream pass a liquid column, when low surfactant
concentrations are used, it occurs the coalescence of the dispersed oil droplets and their transport to the top of the column, forming a new continuous phase. Such surfactants lead to a gas-liquid interface saturation, depending on the used surfactant concentration, affecting the flotation process and influencing in the removal capacity of the oily dispersed phase. A
porous plate filter, with pore size varying from 40 to 250 mm, was placed at the base of the column to allow a hydrodynamic stable operation. During the experimental procedures, the
operating volume of phase liquid was held constant and the rate of air flow varied in each experiment. The resulting experimental of the study hydrodynamic demonstrated what the
capturing of the oil was influenced by diameter of the bubbles and air flow. With the increase flow of 300 about to 900 cm3.min-1, occurred an increase in the removal of oil phase of 44% about to 66% and the removal kinetic of oil was defined as a reaction of 1° order.

▼ The molecular distillation is show as an alternative for separation and purification of various
kinds of materials. The process is a special case of evaporation at high vacuum, in the order
from 0.001 to 0.0001 mmHg and therefore occurs at relatively lower temperatures, preserves
the material to be purified. In Brazil, molecular distillation is very applied in the separation of
petroleum fractions. However, most studies evaluated the temperature of the evaporator,
condenser temperature and flow such variables of the molecular distillation oil. Then, to
increase the degree of recovery of the fraction of the distillate obtained in the process of the
molecular distillation was evaluated the use nonionic surfactants of the class of nonylphenol
ethoxylate, molecules able to interact in the liquid-liquid and liquid-vapor interface various
systems. In this context, the aim of this work was to verify the influence of commercial
surfactant (Ultranex-18 an Ultranex-18-50) in the molecular distillation of a crude oil. The
physicochemical characterization of the oil was realized and the petroleum shown an API
gravity of 42°, a light oil. Initially, studied the molecular distillation without surfactant using
star design experimental (2H ± ) evaluated two variables (evaporator temperature and
condenser temperature) and answer variable was the percentage in distillate obtained in the
process (D%). The best experimental condition to molecular distillation oil (38% distillate) was
obtained at evaporator and condenser temperatures of 120 °C and 10 ° C, respectively.
Subsequently, to determine the range of surfactant concentration to be applied in the process,
was determined the critical micellar concentration by the technique of scattering X-ray small
angle (SAXS). The surfactants Ultranex-18 an Ultranex-18-50 shown the critical micelle
concentration in the range of 10-2 mol/L in the hydrocarbons studied. Then, was applied in the
study of distillation a concentration range from 0.01 to 0.15 mol/L of the surfactants (Ultranex-
18 and 50). The use of the nonionic surfactant increased the percentage of hydrocarbons in the
range from 5 to 9 carbons in comparison to the process carried out without surfactant, and in
some experimental conditions the fraction of light compounds in the distilled was over 700%
compared to the conventional process. The study showed that increasing the degree of
ethoxylation of Ultranex18 to Ultranex-50, the compounds in the range of C5 to C9 reduced the
percentage in the distilled, since the increase of the hydrophilic part of the surfactant reduces its
solubility in the oil. Finally, was obtained an increase in the degree of recovery of light
hydrocarbons, comparing processes with and without surfactant, obtained an increase of 10%
and 4% with Ultranex-18 and Ultranex-50, respectively. Thus, it is concluded that the Ultranex-
18 surfactant showed a higher capacity to distillation compared with Ultranex-50 and the
application of surfactant on the molecular distillation from…

▼ The high concentration of residual oil is one of the greatest problems found in petroleum mature fields. In these reservoirs, different enhanced oil recovery methods (EOR) can be used, highlighting the microemulsion injection. The microemulsion has
showed to be efficient in petroleum recovery due to its ability to promote an efficient displacement of the petroleum, acting directly in the residual oil. In this way, this research has as objective the study of microemulsion systems obtained using a
commercial surfactant (TP), determining microemulsion thermal stabilities and selecting points inside the pseudoternary phases diagram, evaluating its efficiencies and
choosing the best system, that has the following composition: TP as surfactant (S), isopropyl alcohol as co-surfactant (C), kerosene as oil phase, water as aqueous phase, C/S ratio = 1, and 5% sodium p-toluenesulfonate as hydrotope; being observed the following parameters for the selection of the best pseudoternary phases diagram: C/S ratio, co-surfactant nature and addition of hydrotope to the system. The efficiency in petroleum recovery was obtained using two sandstone formation systems: Assu and Botucatu. The study of thermal stabilities showed that as the concentration of active matter in the system increased, the thermal stability also increased. The best thermal stability was obtained using point F (79.56 0C). The system that presented the best
recovery percentile between the three selected (3) was composed by: 70% C/S, 2% kerosene and 28% water, with 94% of total recovery efficiency and 60% with microemulsion injection, using the Botucatu formation, that in a general way presented greater efficiencies as compared with the Assu one (81.3% of total recovery efficiency and 38.3% with microemulsion injection)

▼ The WAT is the temperature at the beginning of the appearance of wax crystals. At this temperature the first wax crystals are formed by the cooling systems paraffin / solvents.
Paraffins are composed of a mixture of saturated hydrocarbons of high molecular weight. The removal of petroleum from wells and the production lines means a surcharge on produced oil,
thus solubilize these deposits formed due to modifications of thermodynamics has been a constant challenge for companies of oil exploration. This study combines the paraffin solubilization by microemulsion systems, the determination of WAT systems paraffin / solvent and performance of surfactant in reducing the crystallization. We used the methods: rheological and the photoelectric signal, validating the latter which was developed to optimize the data obtained due to sensitivity of the equipment used. Methods developed for description of wax precipitation are often in poor agreement with the experimental data, they tend to underestimate the amount of wax at temperatures below the turbidity point. The Won method and the Ideal solution method were applied to the WAT data obtained in solvent systems, best represented by the second interaction of Won method using the solvents naphtha, hexane and LCO. It was observed that the results obtained by WAT photoelectric signal when compared with the viscosity occur in advance, demonstrating the greatest sensitivity of the method
developed. The ionic surfactant reduced the viscosity of the solvent systems as it acted modifying the crystalline structure and, consequently, the pour point. The curves show that the WAT experimental data is, in general, closer to the modeling performed by the method of Won than to the one performed by the ideal solution method, because this method underestimates the curve predicting the onset of paraffin hydrocarbons crystallization temperature. This occurs because the actual temperature measured was the crystallization temperature and the method proposes the fusion temperature measurement.

▼ In the petroleum industry, water is always present in the reservoir formation together with petroleum and natural gas and this fact provokes the production of water with petroleum,
resulting in a great environmental impact. Several methods can be applied for treatment of oily waters, such as: gravitational vases, granulated media filtration systems, flotation process, centrifugation process and the use of hydrocyclones, which can also be used in a combined way. However, the flotation process has showed a great efficiency as compared with other methods, because these methods
do not remove great part of the emulsified oil. In this work was investigated the use of surfactants derived from vegetable oils, OSS and OGS,
as collectors, using the flotation process in a glass column with a porous plate filter in its base for the input of the gaseous steam. For this purpose, oil/water emulsions were prepared using mechanical stirring, with concentrations around 300 ppm. The air flow rate was set at 700 cm3/min and the porous plate filter used for the generation of the air bubbles has pore size
varying from 16 to 40 Pm. The column operated at constant volume (1500mL). A new methodology has been developed to collect the samples, where, instead of collecting the water
phase, it was collected the oil phase removed by the process in the top of the flotation column. It has been observed that it is necessary to find an optimum surfactant concentration to
achieve enhanced removal efficiency. Being for OSS 1.275 mmol/L and for OGS 0.840 mmol/L, with removal efficiencies of 93% and 99%, respectively, using synthetic solutions.
For the produced water, the removal in these concentrations was 75% for OSS and 65% for OGS. It is possible to remove oil from water in a flotation process using surfactants of high
HLB, fact that is against the own definition of HLB (Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance). The interfacial tension is an important factor in the oil removal process using a flotation process,
because it has direct interference in the coalescence of the oil drops. The spreading of the oil of the air bubble should be considered in the process, and for the optimum surfactant
concentrations it reached a maximum value. The removal kinetics for the flotation process using surfactants in the optimum concentration has been adjusted according to a first order model, for synthetic water as for the produced water.

▼ The determination of the rheology of drilling fluids is of fundamental importance to select the best composition and the best treatment to be applied in these fluids. This work presents a study of the rheological behavior of some addictives used as viscosifiers in water-based drilling fluids. The evaluated addictives were: Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), Xanthan gum (GX), and Bentonite. The main objective was to rheologically characterize suspensions composed by these addictives, by applying mathematical models for fluid flow behavior, in order to determine the best flow equation to represent the system, as well as the model parameters. The mathematical models applied in this research were: the Bingham Model, the Ostwald de Wale Model, and the Herschel-Bulkley Model. A previous study of hydration time for each used addictive was accomplished seeking to evaluate the effect of polymer and clay hydration on rheological behavior of the fluid. The rheological characterization was made through typical rheology experiments, using a coaxial cylinder viscosimeter, where the flow curves and the thixotropic magnitude of each fluid was obtained. For each used addictive the rheological behavior as a function of temperature was also evaluated as well as fluid stability as a function of the concentration and kind of addictive used. After analyses of results, mixtures of polymer and clay were made seeking to evaluate the rheological modifications provided by the polymer incorporation in the water + bentonite system. The obtained results showed that the Ostwald de Waale model provided the best fit for fluids prepared using CMC and for fluids with Xanthan gum and Bentonite the best fit was given by the Herschel-Bulkley one

▼ The development of new fuels is an important field of scientific and technological activities, since much of the energy consumed in the world is obtained from oil, coal and
natural gas, and these sources are limited and not renewable. Recently it has assessed the employment of microemulsions as an alternative for obtaining fuel isotropic between
phases originally not miscible. Among many advantages, emphasizes the application of substances that provide the reduction of levels of emissions compared to fossil fuels. Thus,
this work was a study of various microemulsified systems, aiming to check the performance of the winsor regions front of the use of surfactants: RENEX 18 → 150, UNITOL L-60 → L-100 and AMIDA 60, together with structure of esters from soybean and castor bean oils. From the results it were chosen four systems to physico-chemical analyzes: System I RENEX 60, Soil bean oil, methylic ester (EMOS) and water; System
II RENEX 60/AMIDA 60, EMOS and water; System III RENEX 70, mamona oil methylic ester (EMOM) and water and System IV RENEX 95, EMOM and water. The tests of physico-chemical characterization and study of temperature increase were done with nine points with different compositions in a way to include the interest area
(microemulsion W/O). After this study, was conducted a modeling to predict the viscosity, the property is more varied as function of compositions systems changes. The best results were the systems II and IV with a temperature stability above 60°C. The system I had its physico-chemical characterization very similar to a fossil fuel. The system II was the best one due to its corrosivity be stable. In the modeling the four systems had shown good, with
an error that varied between 5 and 18%, showing to be possible the viscosity prediction from the composition of the system. The effects the microemulsion and the engine´s
performance with the microemulsion were also avaliated. The tests were performed in a cycle-diesel engine. The potency and consumption were analysed. Results show a slight
increase the rendiment fuel compared with the conventional as well as a decrease in specific consumption

▼ Natural gas, although basically composed by light hydrocarbons, also presents in its composition gaseous contaminants such as CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H2S (hydrogen sulfide). Hydrogen sulfide, which commonly occurs in oil and gas exploration and production activities, besides being among the gases that are responsible by the acid rain and greenhouse effect, can also cause serious harm to health, leading even to death, and damages to oil and
natural gas pipelines. Therefore, the removal of hydrogen sulfide will significantly reduce operational costs and will result in oil with best quality to be sent to refinery, thereby resulting
in economical, environmental, and social benefits. These factors highlight the need for the development and improvement of hydrogen sulfide sequestrating agents to be used in the oil industry. Nowadays there are several procedures for hydrogen sulfide removal from natural
gas used by the petroleum industry. However, they produce derivatives of amines that are harmful to the distillation towers, form insoluble precipitates that cause pipe clogging and produce wastes of high environmental impact. Therefore, the obtaining of a stable system, in inorganic or organic reaction media, that is able to remove hydrogen sulfide without forming by-products that affect the quality and costs of natural gas processing, transport and distribution is of great importance. In this context, the evaluation of the kinetics of H2S removal is a valuable procedure for the treatment of natural gas and disposal of the byproducts
generated by the process. This evaluation was made in an absorption column packed with Raschig ring, where natural gas with H2S passes through a stagnant solution, being the
contaminant absorbed by it. The content of H2S in natural gas in column output was monitored by an H2S analyzer. The comparison between the obtained curves and the study of
the involved reactions have not only allowed to determine the efficiency and mass transfer controlling step of the involved processes but also make possible to effect a more detailed
kinetic study and evaluate the commercial potential of each reagent

▼ The objective of this study was to evaluate the displacement of
petroleum/diesel solutions, at different concentrations, observing the effect of
ultrasonic vibrations in fluids present in porous media to obtain an increase in oil
production. The bubbles produced by ultrasound implode asymmetrically in the rock,
generating liquid jets with high speed, displacing the oil present in porous media. The
oil/diesel solutions were prepared with concentrations ranging from 20 g/L to 720 g/L
in oil in relation to diesel and its viscosities were obtained in a Brookfield Rheometer
RS2000, with temperature ranging from 25 to 55 °C. After, calculations were
performed to obtain the activation energy data for oil/diesel solutions. For oil recovery
experiments, cylindrical samples of porous rock (core samples), with resin around the
perimeter and its two circular bases free to allow the passage of fluids, were first
saturated with 2% KCl solution and after with oil solutions. The results of oil
extraction were satisfactory for all studied solutions, being obtained up to 68% partial
displacement with saline solution injection. The ultrasound system was used after
saline injection, increasing oil displacement, with oil extractions ranging from 63% to
79%. During the experiments, it was observed the warming of core samples, helping to
reduce the viscosity of more concentrated systems, and consequently enhancing the
percentage of advanced recovery for all studied solutions

▼ The flow assurance has become one of the topics of greatest interest in the oil industry, mainly due to production and transportation of oil in regions with extreme temperature and pressure. In these operations the wax deposition is a commonly problem in flow of paraffinic oils, causing the rising costs of the process, due to increased energy cost of pumping, decreased production, increased pressure on the line and risk of blockage of the pipeline. In order to describe the behavior of the wax deposition phenomena in turbulent flow of paraffinic oils, under different operations conditions, in this work we developed a simulator with easy interface. For that we divided de work in four steps: (i) properties estimation (physical, thermals, of transport and thermodynamics) of n-alkanes and paraffinic mixtures by using correlations; (ii) obtainment of the solubility curve and determination the wax appearance temperature, by calculating the solid-liquid equilibrium of parafinnic systems; (iii) modelling wax deposition process, comprising momentum, mass and heat transfer; (iv) development of graphic interface in MATLAB® environment for to allow the understanding of simulation in different flow conditions as well as understand the matter of the variables (inlet temperature, external temperature, wax appearance temperature, oil composition, and time) on the behavior of the deposition process. The results showed that the simulator developed, called DepoSim, is able to calculate the profile of temperature, thickness of the deposit, and the amount of wax deposited in a simple and fast way, and also with consistent results and applicable to the operation

▼ The treatment of oil produced water and its implications are continually under investigation
and several questions are related to this subject. In the Northeast Region Brazil, the onshore
reservoirs are, in its majority, mature oil fields with high production of water. As this
oil produced water has high levels of oil, it cannot be directly discarded into the environment
because it represents a risk for contamination of soil, water, and groundwater, or even may
cause harm to living bodies. Currently, polyelectrolytes that promote the coalescence of the
oil droplets are used to remove the dispersed oil phase, enhancing the effectiveness of the
flotation process. The non-biodegradability and high cost of polyelectrolytes are limiting
factors for its application. On this context, it is necessary to develop studies for the search of
more environmentally friendly products to apply in the flotation process. In this work it is
proposed the modeling of the flotation process, in a glass column, using surfactants derived
from vegetal oils to replace the polyelectrolytes, as well as to obtain a model that represents
the experimental data. In addition, it was made a comparative study between the models
described in the literature and the one developed in this research. The obtained results showed
that the developed model presented high correlation coefficients when fitting the experimental
data (R2 > 0.98), thus proving its efficiency in modeling the experimental data.

For this end, experiments were accomplished in a column of small dimension objectifying to verify the influence of the surfactant SCO in the efficiency of oil removal. This way, they were prepared emulsions with amount it fastens of oil (50, 100, 200 and 400 ppm), being determined the great concentrations of surfactant for each one of them. Some rehearsals were still accomplished with produced water of the industry of the petroleum to compare the result with the one of the emulsions. According to the experiments, it was verified that an increase of the surfactant concentration does not implicate in a greater oil removal. The separation process
use gaseous bubbles formed when a gas stream pass a liquid column, when low surfactant concentrations are used, it occurs the coalescence of the dispersed oil droplets and their transport to the top of the column, forming a new continuous phase. Such surfactants lead to a gas-liquid interface saturation, depending on the used surfactant concentration, affecting the flotation process and influencing in the removal capacity of the oily dispersed phase. A porous plate filter, with pore size varying from 40 to 250 mm, was placed at the base of the
column to allow a hydrodynamic stable operation. During the experimental procedures, the operating volume of phase liquid was held constant and the rate of air flow varied in each experiment. The resulting experimental of the study hydrodynamic demonstrated what the capturing of the oil was influenced by diameter of the bubbles and air flow. With the increase flow of 300 about to 900 cm3.min-1, occurred an increase in the removal of oil phase of 44% about to 66% and the removal kinetic of oil was defined as a reaction of 1° order

▼ The industry, over the years, has been working to improve the efficiency of
diesel engines. More recently, it was observed the need to reduce pollutant emissions to
conform to the stringent environmental regulations. This has attached a great interest to
develop researches in order to replace the petroleum-based fuels by several types of less
polluting fuels, such as blends of diesel oil with vegetable oil esters and diesel fuel with
vegetable oils and alcohol, emulsions, and also microemulsions. The main objective of this
work was the development of microemulsion systems using nonionic surfactants that belong
to the Nonylphenols ethoxylated group and Lauric ethoxylated alcohol group, ethanol/diesel
blends, and diesel/biodiesel blends for use in diesel engines. First, in order to select the
microemulsion systems, ternary phase diagrams of the used blends were obtained. The
systems were composed by: nonionic surfactants, water as polar phase, and diesel fuel or
diesel/biodiesel blends as apolar phase. The microemulsion systems and blends, which
represent the studied fuels, were characterized by density, viscosity, cetane number and flash
point. It was also evaluated the effect of temperature in the stability of microemulsion
systems, the performance of the engine, and the emissions of carbon monoxide, nitrogen
oxides, unburned hydrocarbons, and smoke for all studied blends. Tests of specific fuel
consumption as a function of engine power were accomplished in a cycle diesel engine on a
dynamometer bench and the emissions were evaluated using a GreenLine 8000 analyzer. The
obtained results showed a slight increase in fuel consumption when microemulsion systems
and diesel/biodiesel blends were burned, but it was observed a reduction in the emission of
nitrogen oxides, unburned hydrocarbons, smoke index and f sulfur oxides

▼ Natural gas, although basically composed by light hydrocarbons, also presents
contaminant gases in its composition, such as CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H2S (hydrogen
sulfide). The H2S, which commonly occurs in oil and gas exploration and production
activities, causes damages in oil and natural gas pipelines. Consequently, the removal of
hydrogen sulfide gas will result in an important reduction in operating costs. Also, it is
essential to consider the better quality of the oil to be processed in the refinery, thus resulting
in benefits in economic, environmental and social areas. All this facts demonstrate the need
for the development and improvement in hydrogen sulfide scavengers. Currently, the oil
industry uses several processes for hydrogen sulfide removal from natural gas. However,
these processes produce amine derivatives which can cause damage in distillation towers, can
cause clogging of pipelines by formation of insoluble precipitates, and also produce residues
with great environmental impact. Therefore, it is of great importance the obtaining of a stable
system, in inorganic or organic reaction media, able to remove hydrogen sulfide without
formation of by-products that can affect the quality and cost of natural gas processing,
transport, and distribution steps. Seeking the study, evaluation and modeling of mass transfer
and kinetics of hydrogen removal, in this study it was used an absorption column packed with
Raschig rings, where the natural gas, with H2S as contaminant, passed through an aqueous
solution of inorganic compounds as stagnant liquid, being this contaminant gas absorbed by
the liquid phase. This absorption column was coupled with a H2S detection system, with
interface with a computer. The data and the model equations were solved by the least squares
method, modified by Levemberg-Marquardt. In this study, in addition to the water, it were
used the following solutions: sodium hydroxide, potassium permanganate, ferric chloride,
copper sulfate, zinc chloride, potassium chromate, and manganese sulfate, all at low
concentrations (»10 ppm). These solutions were used looking for the evaluation of the
interference between absorption physical and chemical parameters, or even to get a better
mass transfer coefficient, as in mixing reactors and absorption columns operating in counterflow.
In this context, the evaluation of H2S removal arises as a valuable procedure for the
treatment of natural gas and destination of process by-products. The study of the obtained
absorption curves makes possible to determine the mass transfer predominant stage in the
involved processes, the mass transfer volumetric coefficients, and the equilibrium
concentrations. It was also performed a kinetic study. The obtained results showed that the
H2S removal kinetics is greater for NaOH. Considering that the study was performed at low
concentrations of chemical reagents, it was possible to check the effect of secondary reactions
in the other chemicals, especially in the case of KMnO4, which shows that your by-product,
MnO2, acts in…

▼ The diesel combustion form sulfur oxides that can be discharged into the atmosphere as particulates and primary pollutants, SO2and SO3, causing great damage to the environment and to human health. These products can be transformed into acids in the combustion chamber, causing damage to the engines. The worldwide concern with a clean and healthy environment has led to more restrictive laws and regulations regulating the emission levels of pollutants in the air, establishing sulfur levels increasingly low on fuels. The conventional methods for sulfur removal from diesel are expensive and
do not produce a zero-level sulfur fuel. This work aims to develop new methods of removing sulfur from commercial diesel using surfactants and microemulsion systems. Its main purpose is to create new technologies and add economic viability to the process. First, a preliminary study using as extracting agent a Winsor I microemulsion system with dodecyl ammonium chloride (DDACl) and nonyl phenol ethoxylated (RNX95) as surfactant was performed to choose the surfactant. The RNX95 was chosen to be used as surfactant in microemulsioned systems for adsorbent surface modification and as an extracting agent in liquid-liquid extraction. Vermiculite was evaluated as adsorbent. The microemulsion systems applied for vermiculite surface modification were composed by RNX95 (surfactant), n-butanol (cosurfactant), n-hexane (oil phase), and different aqueous phases, including: distilled water (aqueous phase),20ppm CaCl2solution, and 1500ppm CaCl2solution. Batch and column adsorption tests were carried out to estimate the ability of vermiculite to adsorb sulfur from diesel. It was used in the experiments a commercial diesel fuel with 1,233ppm initial sulfur concentration. The batch experiments were performed according to a factorial design (23). Two experimental sets were accomplished: the first one applying 1:2 vermiculite to diesel ratio and the second one using 1:5 vermiculite to diesel ratio. It was evaluated the effects of temperature (25°C and 60°C), concentration of CaCl2in the aqueous phase (20ppm and 1500ppm), and vermiculite granule size (65 and 100 mesh). The experimental response was the ability of vermiculite to adsorb sulfur. The best results for both 1:5 and 1:2 ratios were obtained using 60°C, 1500ppm CaCl2solution, and 65 mesh. The best adsorption capacities for 1:5 ratio and for 1:2 ratio were 4.24 mg sulfur/g adsorbent and 2.87 mg sulfur/g adsorbent, respectively. It was verified that the most significant factor was the concentration of the CaCl2 solution. Liquid-liquid extraction experiments were performed in two and six steps using the same surfactant to diesel ratio. It was obtained 46.8% sulfur removal in two-step experiment and 73.15% in six-step one. An alternative study, for comparison purposes, was made using bentonite and diatomite…

▼ Petroleum is a complex combination of various classes of hydrocarbons, with paraffinic, naphtenic and aromatic compounds being those more commonly found in its composition. The recent changes in the world scenario, the large reserves of heavy oils and also the lack of new discoveries of large petroleum fields are indications that, in the near future, the oil recovery by conventional methods will be limited. In order to increase the efficiency of the extraction process, enhanced recovery methods are cited in applications where conventional techniques have proven to be little effective. The injection of surfactant solutions as an enhanced recovery method is advantageous in that surfactants are able to reduce the interfacial tensions between water and oil, thus augmenting the displacement efficiency and, as a consequence, increasing the recovery factor. This work aims to investigate the effects of some parameters that influence the surfactant behavior in solution, namely the type of surfactant, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the surface and interface tensions between fluids. Seawater solutions containing the surfactants PAN, PHN and PJN have been prepared for presenting lower interfacial tensions with petroleum and higher stability under increasing temperature and salinity. They were examined in an experimental apparatus designed to assess the recovery factor. Botucatu (Brazil) sandstone plug samples were submitted to assay steps comprising saturation with seawater and petroleum, conventional recovery with seawater and enhanced recovery with surfactant solutions. The plugs had porosity between 29.6 and 32.0%, with average effective permeability to water of 83 mD. The PJN surfactant, at a concentration 1000% above CMC in water, had a higher recovery factor, causing the original oil in place to be recovered by an extra 20.97%, after conventional recovery with seawater

▼ The constant search for biodegradable materials for applications in several fields
shows that carnauba wax can be a viable alternative in the manufacturing of
biolubricants. Carnauba wax is the unique among the natural waxes to have a
combination of properties of great importance. In previous studies it was verified the
presence of metals in wax composition that can harm the oxidative stability of
lubricants. Considering these factors, it was decided to develop a research to evaluate
iron removal from carnauba wax, using microemulsion systems (Me) and perform the
optimization of parameters, such as: extraction pH, temperature, extraction time, among
others. Iron concentration was determined by atomic absorption and, to perform this
analysis, sample digestion in microwave oven was used, showing that this process was
very efficient. It was performed some analysis in order to characterize the wax sample,
such as: attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR), thermogravimetry
(TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence
(EDXRF), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and melting point (FP). The
microemulsion systems were composed by: coconut oil as surfactant, n-butanol as
cosurfactant, kerosene and/or heptanes as oil phase, distilled water as water phase. The
pH chosen for this study was 4.5 and the metal extraction was performed in finite
experiments. To evaluate Me extraction it was performed a factorial design for systems
with heptane and kerosene as oil phase, also investigating the influence of temperature
time and wax/Me ratio, that showed an statistically significant answer for iron
extraction at 95% confidence level. The best result was obtained at 60°C, 10 hours
contact time and 1: 10 wax/Me ratio, in both systems with kerosene and heptanes as oil
phase. The best extraction occurred with kerosene as oil phase, with 54% iron removal

▼ The large investment in exploration activities offshore Brazil has generated new findings, generally in carbonate reservoirs, with different wettability conditions usually considered in the sandstone, strongly water-wet. In general, the carbonates reservoirs tend to be oil-wet, it difficult to mobilize of oil these reservoirs. These oils can be mobilized by different methods, or it may reverse the wettability of the surface of the reservoir and facilitate the flow of oil, improving production rates. Thus, the objective of this work was to study the influence of inversion on the wettability of the rock in the production and recovery of petroleum from carbonate reservoirs, using microemulsions. Three systems were chosen with different classes of surfactants: a cationic (C16TAB), an anionic (SDS) and nonionic (Unitol L90). Studies of the influence of salinity on the formation of the microemulsion as well as the characterization of fluids using density and viscosity measurements were also performed. To verify the potential of microemulsion systems in changing the wettability state of the chalk oil-wet to water-wet, contact angle measurements were performed using chalk of neutral-wet as surface material. Overall, with respect to the ionic character of the surfactants tested, the cationic surfactant (C16TAB) had a greater potential for reversal in wettability able to transform the rock wettability neutral to strongly water-wet, when compared with the anionic surfactant (SDS) and nonionic (Unitol L90), which showed similar behavior, improving the wettability of the rock to water. The microemulsions of all surfactants studied were effective in oil recovery, resulting in 76.92% for the system with C16TAB, 67.42% for the SDS and 66.30% for Unitol L90 of residual oil

▼ Petroleum exists in the nature in certain underground formations where it is adsorbed into the rocks pores. For the conventional recovery methods usually only 30% of the oil is extracted and this can be credited, basically, to three aspects: high viscosity of the oil, geology of the formation and high interfacial tensions between the reservoir s fluids. The enhanced recovery methods use the injection of a fluid or fluids mixture in a reservoir to act in points where the conventional process didn't reach the recovery rates. Microemulsion flooding, considered an enhanced method, has the purpose to desorb the oil from the rock formation and to attain an efficient displacement of the oil emulsion. With this in mind, this work was accomplished with two main objectives: the study of the parameters effect that influence a microemulsified system (surfactant and cosurfactant types, C/S rate and salinity) and the evaluation of displacement efficiency with the microemulsions that showed stability in the rich aqueous area. For the analyzed parameters it was chose the microemulsions composition used in the recovery stage: 25% water, 5% kerosene, 46.7% of butanol as cosurfactant and 23.3% of BC or SCO cosurfactant. The core plugs of Assu and Botucatu sandstones were appraised in porosity and permeability tests and then submitted to the steps of saturation with seawater and oil, conventional recovery with water and enhanced recovery with the selected microemulsions. The Botucatu sandstone presented better recovery parameters, and the microemulsion composed with BS surfactant had larger recovery efficiency (26.88%)

▼ During natural gas processing, water removal is considered as a fundamental step in that combination of hydrocarbons and water favors the formation of hydrates. The gas produced
in the Potiguar Basin (Brazil) presents high water content (approximately 15000 ppm) and its dehydration is achieved via absorption and adsorption operations. This process is carried out at the Gas Treatment Unit (GTU) in Guamaré (GMR), in the State of
Rio Grande do Norte. However, it is a costly process, which does not provide satisfactory results when water contents as low as 0.5 ppm are required as the exit of the GTU. In view of this, microemulsions research is regarded as an alternative to natural gas dehydration activities. Microemulsions can be used as desiccant fluids because of their unique proprieties, namely solubilization enhancement, reduction in interfacial tensions and large interfacial area between continuous and dispersed phases. These are actually important parameters to ensure
the efficiency of an absorption column. In this work, the formulation of the desiccant fluid was determined via phases diagram construction, employing there nonionic surfactants (RDG 60, UNTL L60 and AMD 60) and a nonpolar fluid provided by Petrobras GMR (Brazil) typically comprising low-molecular weight liquid hydrocarbons ( a solvent commonly know
as aguarrás ). From the array of phases diagrams built, four representative formulations have been selected for providing better results: 30% RDG 60-70% aguarrás; 15% RDG 60-15%
AMD 60-70% aguarrás, 30% UNTL L60-70% aguarrás, 15% UNTL L60-15% AMD 60-70% aguarrás. Since commercial natural gas is already processed, and therefore dehydrated, it was necessary to moister some sample prior to all assays. It was then allowed to cool down to 13ºC and interacted with wet 8-12 mesh 4A molecular sieve, thus enabling the generation of gas samples with water content (approximately 15000 ppm). The determination of the equilibrium curves was performed based on the dynamic method, which stagnated liquid phase and gas phase at a flow rate of 200 mL min-1. The hydrodynamic study was done with the aim of established the pressure drop and dynamic liquid hold-up. This investigation allowed are to set the working flow rates at 840 mL min-1 for the gas phase and 600 mLmin-1 for the liquid phase. The mass transfer study indicated that the system formed by UNTL L60- turpentine-natural gas the highest value of NUT
