1. Lopes, Eduardo de Almeida. Aspectos operacionais e custos de dois sistemas de exploração de lenha na caatinga .

Degree: 2015, Universidade do Rio Grande do Norte

Sustainable forest management in the Caatinga has great importance, especially to meet the main demand of energy inputs used in the Northeast. However, there are few studies to support the planning and the technical and economic design of firewood logging activities in Caatinga. In this context, this study aimed to analyze and estimate the costs of two logging systems, one manual (with ax and sickle), located in the municipality of João Câmara, Agreste Region, and other semi-mechanized (with chainsaw), located in the municipality of Santa Cruz, Agreste Region, in areas with Sustainable Forest Management in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Data collection was based on observation and timing of operating activities (time and motion study). They were considered effective work the following activities: cutting of trees (felling and bucking), piling, firewood organization, and opening truck trail. On average, the total working journey was 10.17 hours in the manual system, with operational efficiency of 60.5%, and 7.22 hours in semi-mechanized system with operational efficiency of 67.2%. The average productivity was higher in semi-mechanized system, 6.4 stereos per man per day, or the equivalent of 1.32 stereos per effective hour. In manual system, were produced, on average, 4.8 stereos per man per day, and equivalent to 0.78 stereos per effective hour. The cost of the manual operating system was R 11.17 per stereo (R 8.71/h) while the semi-mechanized system was R 14.44 per stereo (R 19.06/h). The cost of the transport related to the manual system was R 5.47 per stereo for the average distance of 75 Km. Regarding to the semi-mechanized system, the cost was lower (R 2.54 per stereo) due to the shorter distance transported (20 Km). Logging was the principal component of the total cost of firewood, representing 66% in the manual system and 83% in semi-mechanized system. Advisors/Committee Members: 94056366004 (advisor).

2. Sousa Júnior, Aécio Dantas de. Documento de Origem Florestal - DOF: análise da comercialização de produtos florestais nativos legalizados no estado do Rio Grande do Norte .

Degree: 2018, Universidade do Rio Grande do Norte

The Document of Forest Origin “DOF” is a mandatory document to control and monitor the transportation of products and by-products of native forest origin, which must accompany the transport and storage of the native products traded at all times. The objective of this work is to analyze the public data of the DOF system generated in the period from 2011 to 2016 and to identify and quantify legalized native forest products marketed and transported in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The data used were made available by the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and correspond to all transport of forest products of native and legalized origin, with final destination of the municipalities of the RN in the period from 2011 to 2016. Rio Grande North between the years 2011 to 2016 received timber products from 24 states of the country, with highlights to the northern states. The number of DOFs originating in the NB had an average growth of 22% between the years 2011 to 2014 and a reduction of 13% in 2015 and 2016 and commercialization and between municipalities transportation were observed in more than 90% of the municipalities. In relation to the species transported in the evaluation period, the movement of 738 different wood species was observed, especially the Angelim-red (Dinizia excelsa), Maçaranduba (Manilkara spp.) and Jatobá (Hymenaea spp.). The main products transported in the state were: Lumber, Firewood and Wood Residues. The analysis of the DOF shows that there have been advances for the native products traded and that most of the products marketed and transported in the RN originate in the Northern states. 3. Chaves, Anny Gabrielle da Cruz. Diagnóstico da exploração de lenha em planos de manejo sustentável na caatinga do Rio Grande do Norte .

Degree: 2016, Universidade do Rio Grande do Norte

The aim of this study was to diagnostic the logging practices in areas showing a Sustainable Forest Management Plan (SFMP) from Caatinga in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Data were collected between 2015 and 2016, by interviews with farm owners from 30 areas that showed a SFMP and by application of a questionnaire. About 63,3% of SFMP had an area up to 750 ha, with productivity varying between 83 and 263 st/ha. The majority (70%) had up to three years of exploration activity and the main explored product was firewood for direct consumption. The wood slashing was being outsourced in 83% of the areas and accomplished by the farm owners in the others. Most of the farm owners (43,3%) found obstacles to hire trained workforce for slashing, which was performed using chainsaw in 66,7% of the properties and using axe and sickle in 13,3% of the properties. In 30% of the areas, there was an illegal exploration of firewood before the SFMP and in 63,3% of the properties the Legal Reserve was delimited by the occasion of SFMP elaboration. To 87,7% of farm owners that were interviewed, the sustainable forest management was considered economically interesting. Regarding the main obstacles found, 80% of the farm owners mentioned the lack of inspection of the exploration and the clandestine trade of firewood, and the others mentioned the delay of authorization by the environmental agency for starting the exploration activities. Despite these obstacles, most of the owners stated that they intend to keep the forest management.
