▼ The removal of CO2 has attracted the interest of industries and researchers due to the
continuous increase in the demand for natural gas and the growing concern with
environmental aspects, mainly related to greenhouse gases. However, traditional
absorption-removal methods, although well established, have had modest
efficiencies. A promising option is the use of microreactors to remove CO2 by
absorption, mainly related to its large area of contact, better mixing and low
resistance by mass transfer. In this work, a mathematical modeling was developed to
evaluate the removal of CO2 in physical and chemical absorption regimes in
microreactors. Two gas streams composed of N2 and CO2 and CH4, N2 and CO2 under
atmospheric pressure (1 atm) and ambient temperature (25 ° C) were analyzed under
different operating conditions and different solvents (distilled water, MEA, EtilEA
and TEA). The results showed that the model presents exceptional adaptation to the
experimental data with absolute mean error of less than 3% and excellent predictive
capacity. With the model contribution, it was possible to observe that the addition of
CH4 did not significantly alter the CO2 absorbed amount, although the variation of
the mass transfer resistances was verified. The higher CO2 absorption efficiencies
were obtained at lower gas velocities and lower gas-liquid ratios. It was also verified
that the presence of chemical reaction intensified the mass transfer, mostly to EtilEA.
And the connection microtube contributed to the final efficiency.

▼ The continuous process of transesterification at supercritical conditions in tubular reactors rises as a new technology that will ensure viable large-scale biodiesel production. The idiosyncrasies of this process are related to the simplified separation processes, use of low quality feedstock, catalyst free and short reaction time (compared to the conventional processes). In these kinds of studies, the recent breakthroughs demonstrate that an inert bed (mixing promoters) may be a feasible alternative to enhance tubular reactor performance when operated at supercritical conditions. However, a rigorous phenomenological analysis forthis new process layout is scarce in literature, which creates some limitations for a complete understanding of the process. Thus, the main objective of the current work is to develop a mathematical model of the process and analyze triglyceride alcoholysis at supercritical conditions using a continuous tubular reactor packed with glass spheres. The operating variables evaluated are temperature (300, 350 and 400 °C), volumetric flowrate (0.5 mL/min and 1.0 mL/min) and bed porosity (0.42, 0.38 and 0.32). The experimental data were evaluated for the oil /alcohol molar ratio of 1:40 and operating pressure of 15 MPa. The model parameters were estimated using the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO), which is a classical heuristic optimization technique. The phenomenological characteristics were analyzed based on the description of multiple gradients along with the false-transient method. The results obtained by the model were able to predict 98% of the experimental data. The higher conversions in esters were achieved for the highest temperature and lowest porosity.

▼ Most Bayer process refineries monitor carefully alumina losses. One of the prominent effects
that cause it is auto precipitation in the clarification circuit. This document proposes a conceptual
model for the representation of the process nuances, considering settler solids profile and
composition, and the uneven fluid flow behavior of a vessel of this type. The technique consists in
discretization of of bayer process decanters in stagest with representation of mixing, reaction, and
splitting. It is proven to be at zero degrees of freedom independently of the composition detail on
liquor and solids composition through a generalized degrees of freedom analysis for an undefined
number of components and stages. The effect of parameters such as number of stages, feed stream
position, and mud bed level on the model response and stability is analyzed so to propose an ideal
range of numerical modelling conditions. The proposed model was shown to be robust and has
guaranteed a steady state solution attaining results that are in accordance with reality. Additionally,
the impact of the number of discretization does not add to the model capacity, in fact it is detrimental
to it by adding numerical instability while the combination of number of stages and position of the
feed possess an optimal functioning combination.

▼ Bubble reactors are widely used to carry out gas-liquid and gas-liquid-solid reactions at
different operating conditions. This type of reactor is often used in chemical,
biochemical and petrochemical industry for conducting processes like chlorination,
oxidation and CO2 removal. A more recent application of bubble reactors is biodiesel
production. In this process, superheated alcohol vapor is bubbled through a liquid
medium containing the reactional substrate. The alcohol, after being transferred to the
liquid phase, reacts with the lipid feedstock to form mono alkyl esters (biodiesel)
through esterification and transesterification, according to the amount of free fatty acids
and triglycerides in the lipid feedstock. A bubble reactor experimental apparatus was
developed and used to conduct oleic acid esterification experiments by using
superheated ethanol vapor. The reactor was operated in the semi-batch mode, where the
effects of ethanol volumetric flow rate, reaction temperature and usage of gas sparger
were evaluated based on free fatty acid conversion. The results showed that all variables
evaluated presented strong effect on bubble reactor performance, where 98% conversion
was achieved at reaction temperature of 130°C and volumetric flowrate of 3.65 mL/min
in approximately 50 minutes of reaction. The usage of the gas sparger to generate
superheated ethanol bubbles increased the average conversion velocity in about 38%
compared to the experiments performed without gas sparger. A phenomenological
mathematical model was developed and implemented in MATLAB®
to describe and
analyze de process. The experimental data ware used to estimate the kinetic and mass
transfer parameters, as well as in model validation. The model fitted the experimental
data with a coefficient of determination R² of 0,987, besides showing great predictive
capability, which was used to simulate and analyze the process.

▼ From the limitations of energy sources, mostly oil derivatives, biodiesel, traditionally produced comes with well-established routes of production such as the transesterification, using conventional heating and homogeneous catalysis. In the search for new technologies in the production of biodiesel, the methods that use alcohol in supercritical conditions have been widely investigated. The importance of continuous operation has taken to some studies of biodiesel production in supercritical method using tubular reactors. The following project has aims to investigate the use of inert (glass) in a tubular bed reactor for the production of biodiesel from soybean oil with pressurized. The effects of the temperature (300, 350 and 400°C), the volumetric flow rate of the reagents (0,5 and 1 mL/min), bed porosity (0.42, 0.38 and 0.32) under the conditions of 15 MPa and molar ratio oil: ethanol 1:40 on the esters conversion of the reaction were analyzed. In addition, the effect of the oil: ethanol molar ratio was analyzed, and for this, experimental runs were conducted at 350°C, 15 MPa and porosity of 0.38 at flow rates of 0.3; 0.5; and 1 mL/min, in different molar ratios (1:10 - 1:70). In general, the results indicated a positive effect of temperature on the ester content, due to the higher solubility of the oil in the alcohol under these conditions. Another interesting result was the combined effect of flow rate and porosity on residence time, maximizing the mass transfer and the miscibility between the phases, allowing the advance of the reaction at low times. The best result (98.99%) were achieved after 8 min of reaction under the conditions of 400°C, 15 MPa, molar ratio soybean oil: ethanol 1:40, flow rate of 0.5 mL/min, and porosity of 0.32.

▼ Milk from different animals can be used for dairy production. Yoghurt is a popular fermented milk product and considered to be one of the greatest importance in terms of consumer acceptance and consumption. The present research deals with the production of strawberry set-type yoghurt by mixing goat and buffalo s milk and it has the objective of taking advantage of the intrinsic characteristics of each milk to produce a final product with desirable attributes. It was conducted by analyzing five experimental groups with different proportions of goat and buffalo s milk: C 100% goat s milk; 7C3B - 70% goat s milk and 30% buffalo s milk, 5C5B - 50% goat s milk and 50% buffalo s milk, 3C7B 30% goat s milk and 70% buffalo s milk; B - 100% buffalo s milk. Each group was evaluated for total
solids content and the acidification profile was monitored every 30 minutes by pH analysis. The yoghurt samples were analyzed for physical-chemical (pH, acidity, protein, fat, total and reducing sugars, ash and total solids), rheological (syneresis and viscosity) and sensory characteristics (appearance, odor, consistency and flavour). Samples with higher percentual of
bubaline milk reached Vm faster, but the time necessary for pH 4.6 (Te) were similar between groups. Statistical differences (p<0.05) were observed for fat and total solids content of
yoghurt, with superior values for groups higher proportions of buffalo s milk. The parameters of behavior reached by the model of Ostwald of Waale pointed yoghurt samples as non-Newtonian and pseudoplastic fluids. Yoghurt made only with goat s milk (C) had higher values (p<0.05) for syneresis, which can be explained by its fragile coagulum. Additionally, this group also had the lowest sensory scores for the attributes consistence and taste, while bubaline yoghurt (B) obtained the best acceptance indexes for all of the appraised parameters

▼ The oil industry has several segments that can impact the environment. Among these,
produced water which has been highlight in the environmental problem because of the great
volume generated and its toxic composition. Those waters are the major source of waste in the
oil industry. The composition of the produced water is strongly dependent on the production
field. A good example is the wastewater produced on a Petrobras operating unit of
Rio
Grande do Norte and Ceará (UO-RNCE). A single effluent treatment station (ETS) of this unit
receives effluent from 48 wells (onshore and offshore), which leads a large fluctuations in the
water quality that can become a complicating factor for future treatment processes. The
present work aims to realize a diagnosis of a sample of produced water from the OU - RNCE
in compliance to certain physical and physico-chemical parameters (chloride concentration,
conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, TOG (oil & grease), nitrate concentration, turbidity,
salinity and temperature). The analysis of the effluent is accomplished by means of a MP
TROLL 9500 Multiparameter probe, a TOG/TPH Infracal from Wilks Enterprise Corp. -
Model HATR - T (TOG) and a MD-31 condutivimeter of Digimed. Results were analyzed by
univariated and multivariated analysis (principal component analysis) associated statistical
control charts. The multivariate analysis showed a negative correlation between dissolved
oxygen and turbidity (-0.55) and positive correlations between salinity and chloride (1),
conductivity, chloride and salinity (0.70). Multivariated analysis showed there are seven
principal components which can explain the variability of the parameters. The variables,
salinity, conductivity and chloride were the most important variables, with, higher sampling
variance. Statistical control charts have helped to establish a general trend between the
physical and chemical evaluated parameters

▼ This dissertation aims to assess the representativeness of the manual chilled mirror analyzer
(model II Chanscope 13-1200-CN-2) used for the determination of condensed
hydrocarbons of natural gas compared to the indirect methods, based on thermodynamic
models equation of state. Additionally, it has been implemented in this study a model for
calculating the dew point of natural gas. The proposed model is a modification of the
equation of state of Peng-Robinson admits that the groups contribution as a strategy to
calculate the binary interaction parameters kij (T) temperature dependence. Experimental
data of the work of Brown et al. (2007) were used to compare the responses of the dew
point of natural gas with thermodynamic models contained in the UniSim process simulator
and the methodology implemented in this study. Then two natural gas compositions were
studied, the first being a standard gas mixture gravimetrically synthesized and, second, a
mixture of processed natural gas. These experimental data were also compared with the
results presented by UniSim process simulator and the thermodynamic model implemented.
However, data from the manual analysis results indicated significant differences in
temperature, these differences were attributed to the formation of dew point of water, as we
observed the appearance of moisture on the mirror surface cooling equipment
