▼ Abstract: The laser biospeckle is an optical interferometric phenomena that occurs when an incident light insides on an active biological material surface. The material activity can be originated from biological processes or even from some isolated physical phenomena. It does exist a group of components in a biological material which can change the biospeckle interference pattern. Many images processing techniques have been employed to quantify the activity level of a biological material and to correlate it with quality patterns. However, the techniques employed at this time for to quantify activity level and to evaluate seed quality, can not be employed to identify the components with acceptable accuracy. However, the identification and differentiation of these components is of fundamental importance to technique development applicable to a variety of situations as seed viability analysis, seed vigor, generating quick and non destructive, as well as capable of automation methods. Physical damages occurring by impact during product handling, insect attack and others do generate zones of low biological activities. By other side, seeds can exhibited zones attacked by fungi and other microorganisms holding high biological activities. Theoretical considerations support the possibility of identifying as well as mapping the phenomena originated from biological activities in seeds by inserting Wavelets Transform (TW) and Frequency Analysis in the image processing. Based on what it has been exposed before, the objectives of this research work can be summarized as to verify the potentiality of the Wavelets Transform (TW) applied to the laser biospeckle signal in indentifying and mapping phenomena associated to activities in seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris, L. The experimental setup included a monochromatic camera, a digital camera, a 632 red and 10 mW powered HeNe laser and a diode 632 nm and 5 mW powered. A tetrazolium (TZ) test was employed as a pattern test. The above described procedure generated digital maps of activity which were compared with the TZ. Results showed that the technique are able of identifying natural and mechanical bruising beans seeds. Artificialy generated thermal and chemical damages were identified as well. ▼ Abstract: Dehydration of grapes have been studied for a long time, however their focus is still in closed environments is a relativity new processes. Still recent, proven its effect of increasing the concentration of phenolic compounds and reducing the amount of water in wort is already evidenced. Thus control more precisely the process by monitoring the physicochemical variables can add a theoretical and technological foundation for the wine production in the State of São Paulo in Brazil. In this sense, the use of analysis techniques for images can be an alternative to improve the process, reduce costs and make the process safer, ensuring a quality food to the consumer. Among the image analysis options, the spectral images show its potential use as a basis for the development of detection and evaluation of chemical and physical characteristics, and other properties. Are proposed as objectives to obtain grants enabling applying instrumentation nondestructive techniques (Spectral Images) to supervise the grape dehydration process (temperature at 37º C and relative humidity around 40%), which may be designed to making wine and the concentrates juice. It was observed that the grapes respond spectrally in a similar way independent to the variety studied, differentiating by peaks in function a major or lesser a specific compound concentration present in its constitution, as phenolic compounds (anthocyanins) and chlorophyll. It was also observed that the multivariate calibration models for the soluble solids prediction that are more spectral information and thus better quality when it is used three wavelengths in the modeling. Thus moderate dehydration has a potential to be monitored by a spectral images, ensuring the product quality and other valued grapes properties. ▼ Abstract: New technologies and tools have being developed from the needs arising during process, which require power, precision and/or replications, everything to simplify as well as to facilitate these operations. During the development of alternative process for water treatment based on the application of Moringa oleifera seeds, it has been observed the need of developing a new method that simplifies the seeds processing for further application as natural coagulant. This way the introduction and application of the proposed alternative treatment would be considerably simplified. The aim of this research work was identified as to develop equipment to process the moringa seeds, removing the seeds shells. Initially, a detailed study of pods and seeds optical as well as mechanical properties was carried out, aiming to survey basic parameters to develop the proposed processing equipment. In parallel, it was also carried a research on shelling mechanisms as disclosed by the pertinent literature, aiming to select operating mechanisms suitable to this project. Finally it was developed the equipment project by means of software simulations and further construction of a prototype for real tests. Seeds physical characterization tests included 4 different seed development stages. As result, it was observed no significant difference of fat and protein contents. It was just observed variations in the color and moisture contents. Following, a correlation between moisture content and Moment of Inertia, obtained through the Biospeckle technique has been carried as well. These results and the evaluated parameters did not give support to make the correlation of Moment of Inertia with seed developing stage. The mechanical characterization revealed higher stress concentration on the seed edges for the four seed development stages. In that situation, shell breakup did not commit of internal portion of the seeds. The equipment idealization for seeds shelling included 3 different options. However all of them induced compressive as well as shear stress loadings. The shelling equipment options included: eccentric table, cylinders and parallel discs. The final decision was based on all advantages and inconveniences of each mechanism, after which the concentric table was selected. ▼ Abstract: Shape definition of bodies exhibiting symmetric, non symmetric or irregular geometry is of fundamental necessity for science and technology developments. Applications of objects shape survey is reflected on several science fields as biology, human prosthesis and orthesis, medical diagnosis, prediction of surgical results, orthopedics, veterinary medicine, industrial quality control, reverse engineering, mathematical modeling, solid mechanics, composites, structural design and inspection, machine elements, static and dynamic problems, machine vision and robotics. This research work devotes special attention to agricultural engineering problems as the shape definition of animal as well as vegetable agricultural products, design of farm machinery elements, plant architecture, plant and soil - machine mechanical interactions, soil - tire contact area determination, products selection and sorting, soil and vegetable mechanical properties determination, soil tillage and agricultural practices studies, product packing design and so forth. Amongst the shape survey methods exhibited by the pertinent literature, the moiré methods are here considered feasible, of low cost, of easy application and speedy. Projection moiré with phase shifting technique has been selected to be considered a developed procedure when compared with remaining moiré methods, presenting also recent developments. This research work includes a variety of practical examples on several agricultural engineering subjects. Shape determination of symmetric bodies, determination of mechanical injuries proportions on agricultural products and three dimensional coordinates model are presented as well. Employed softwares included ImageJ, RisingSun Moiré, SCILAB/SIP, Excell and routines. The conclusions refer to the feasibility of the proposed method to the agricultural engineering science. ▼ Abstract: This research work had the objective of contributing to the development of a methodology applicable to biological tissues vitality analysis by means of a stochastic model. The conceived and tested model is able to interpret as well as to quantify the biospeckle images generated on living tissues. The biospeckle or dynamic speckle phenomenon is generated from the interaction of a coherent light with living tissues or with body surface exhibiting certain kinds of activities. In other words, the biospeckle phenomenon is observed when interfering patterns generated by the incidence of coherent light on a surface exhibiting some kind of dynamic or biological activities change at certain rate. Biological tissues, as well as particles in suspension exhibit dynamic activities, similar to brownian motion, acting as a dynamic diffraction grid to the coherent light. By capturing and processing biospeckle images it is possible to differentiate levels of biological or dynamic activities in the body under study. Dynamic speckle image analysis presents a typical stochastic behavior, suggesting a probabilistic statistical study of image behavior, as brownian motion, entropy or other kind of model associated to random phenomenon. Toward that sense, seed viability analysis, vegetative tissue senescence, as well as brownian motion simulation tests had been carried out. Results indicate that STS (Spatial Temporal Speckle) images show random behavior, impeding quantitative analysis. In opposition, MOC (Matrix Occurrence) images or occurrence matrix, where the chaos effect is minimized, are susceptible to quantifying analysis, similarly to the ¿moment of inertia¿ method.
