Abstract: In this investigation the evaluation of some mechanical properties for aluminum matrix composite is focused. For this purpose, commercially pure Al powders with certain particle sizes are used. Particularly, commercially pure (c.p.) silicon and copper contents are used. Composites designated as Al/2Si/2Cu and Al/4Si/4Cu are constituted. Additionally, other powders with similar nature to Si are also used, i.e., SiO2, SiO2+TiO2 (commercially designated as Tritan® glass, quartz, and TiO2) powders are utilized. Different compaction pressures, sintering, and heat treatments are developed. In accordance with the results, the increase in Si and Cu contents induces to an increase in the tensile strength. Both Cu content and intermetallic Al2Cu are responsible for the improvement in the mechanical behavior of the composites examined. Although two distinct particle size ratios between Al and Si are used, i.e., 8: 1 and 30: 1, no substantial modifications or discrepancies in the tensile strength results are indicated. In the sintering process, the samples are treated at 580 °C. This is chosen due to a possible eutectic transformation above this temperature. Three different sintering times are carried out, i.e., 0.5h, 1h, and 3h. The best sintering time is that of 1h in terms of the obtained compressive strength (CS) results.
