1. Reverdito, Riller Silva, 1982-. Pedagogia do esporte e modelo bioecológico do desenvolvimento humano : indicadores para avaliação de impacto em programa socioesportivo: Sport pedagogy and bioecological human development model : indicators for impact assessment in extracurricular social program of sports.

Degree: 2016, Universidade Estadual de Campinas

Abstract: Sports are a major socio-cultural phenomenon in modern societies, impacting multiple aspects of people¿s lives. Regarding public policy, Brazil has one of the broadest youth sports program and is also hosting some of the largest sports events in the world (e.g., 2016 Olympic Games, 2014 FIFA World Cup). From an ecological perspective, the main objective of this study was to examine the impact on youngsters of participating in sports programs through experience¿s indicators. The study design followed the bioecological perspective, focused on youngsters participating in the Second Half Program (Programa Segundo Tempo, PST), which has a significant sports-participation action promoted by the Brazilian government. Data were collected from five cities that implemented the PST program, selected based on the longest implementation time. The population studied was composed of teachers (n = 16), former participants (n = 11) and current participants (n = 832) of the PST program. Teachers were selected based on the longest program participation, while former students were appointed by the selected teachers. Both groups were interviewed about their positive experiences and the effects of perceived competence within the PST program. The students¿ experiences and their impacts on the development process were observed using the General Self-esteem Scale, the Youth Experience Survey (YES-S) and the Developmental Assets Profile. The study analyzed data from the PST (program durations, status, and number of programs per region) and Human Development Index, using multilevel regression models to perceived the relations between perception, context and PST participation time. We identified positive experiences in sport related to the program¿s activities and the inter-personal relations with peers and teachers. We also observed an influence of competence on inter-personal relations and behavioral self-regulation. There was a sizeable and positive influence of self-efficacy on the youngsters¿ positive experiences in sports, reinforced by the length of participation in the PST. The reach and quality of support are predictive factors for the length of participation in the PST. Cities with higher Human Development Index were able to sustain the program for longer, which contradicts the PST¿s purposes. Length of participation in the PST and the Human Development Index were important variables to explain development experiences provided by sports. It is evident that the positive effects of participation in sports are dependent on the continuity of the program. Hence, the positive effects of sports participation are dependent on the continuous financial, technical and human support, considering local idiosyncrasies and macro-structural factors. Finally, from a Sports Pedagogy perspective, youth sports programs should promote positive experiences, transferring their effects to other aspects of life and increasing the possibilities of youngsters participating in sports Advisors/Committee Members: UNIVERSIDADE ESTADUAL DE CAMPINAS (CRUESP), Paes, Roberto Rodrigues, 1956- (advisor), Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
