1. Moretto, Maria Clara, 1985-. Diabetes, adiposidade corporal e raça em idosos da comunidade : dados do Estudo FIBRA - Pólo Unicamp: Diabetes, body adiposity and race in community-dwelling elderly : data from FIBRA Study - Unicamp Pole.

Degree: 2015, Universidade Estadual de Campinas

Abstract: Objectives: To verify associations of self-reported diabetes and its treatment with sociodemographic variables, physical activity and anthropometric (body fat indicators) factors, according to racial groups, in Brazilian community-dwelling elderly. Methods: Cross-sectional investigation, based on the FIBRA (Fragility in Elderly Brazilians) Study. The probabilistic sample was composed by elderly individuals aged 65 and above, living in communities in seven Brazilian cities. Measurements used were: sociodemographic data obtained by self-reporting: gender, age, self-reported skin color (race), educational level and family income; level of physical activity, based on a questionnaire; anthropometric data (BMI, WC and WHR), obtained by a trained examiner; self-reported loss and gain of weight; self-reported diabetes and its treatment. Results: Self-reported diabetes was associated with obesity but mostly with abdominal adiposity (WHR) and unintentional weight loss. Not being treated for diabetes mellitus was associated with advanced age, lower levels of education and lower abdominal adiposity (WHR). White individuals were associated with abdominal adiposity (WC and WHR), only in men, adjusting for schooling and familiar income. In the presence of diabetes, this association no longer occurred in males. However, it became evident in black women, who were associated with general (BMI) and central (WC) obesity, compared to mixed race women. These elders showed the best metabolic profile (WC). The factors most associated with diabetes were: abdominal obesity (WHR and WC) and sedentariness in whites; abdominal obesity (WHR) and illiteracy in mixed race individuals; general (BMI) and abdominal (RCQ) obesity in blacks. Conclusion: We emphasize the approach of individualized health strategies, focused to the specificities of each racial group, in diabetes treatment, and particularly with regard to the prevention and management of obesity, which is the main modifiable risk factor for the disease Advisors/Committee Members: UNIVERSIDADE ESTADUAL DE CAMPINAS (CRUESP), Guariento, Maria Elena, 1955- (advisor), Universidade Estadual de Campinas. 2. Pinto, Juliana Martins, 1987-. Participação social, saúde e bem estar em idosos da comunidade = Estudo Fibra polo Unicamp = Social participation, health and well-being in community-dwelling elderly: Fibra study: Social participation, health and well-being in community-dwelling elderly : Fibra study.

Degree: 2016, Universidade Estadual de Campinas

Abstract: Social participation has been associated with successful aging and well-being in old age, as it allows the elderly to the acquisition and maintenance of physical and cognitive function through which they can remain healthy, active and productive as they age. Although configures an important pillar in the policy for active aging recommended by WHO, social participation has been little explored as an outcome. There are lacks of consensus regarding to engagement and disengagement trajectories in old age, as well as the knowledge about the determinants of this behavior. Also there is a gap about what social activities is more important to the health and well-being of the elderly. The objectives of this study were: 1) identify the prevalence of specific patterns of social participation among the elderly; 2) to investigate the factors associated with low social involvement and 3) to study the relationships between different levels of participation and social activities, health and well-being in old age. The first objective was achieved through a systematic review of the literature which has identified the trajectory of social disengagement as the most frequently mentioned by longitudinal studies, although the justifications referring readers to the theory of activity and socioemotional selectivity. The second and third goals were achieved through statistical analysis using the electronic database of the FIBRA study polo Unicamp. This is a multicenter, cross-sectional study with a probabilistic sample in one stage which selected subjects aged 65 or more in seven Brazilian cities. The subjects were recruited from their homes and interviewed in public places previously scheduled between 2008 and 2009. The determinants of low social participation were low social support, vision impairment, depressive symptoms, poor cognitive status and slowness, discussed in the second article. In the third article was discussed the gender differences found in the influence of social participation levels in the self-rated health and life satisfaction. In conclusion, different social activities have different influences on the health and well-being of elderly according to gender. The development of policies and strategies for the promotion of active aging requires deeper work on the theoretical and practical aspects involved in social participation of older people Advisors/Committee Members: UNIVERSIDADE ESTADUAL DE CAMPINAS (CRUESP), Neri, Anita Liberalesso, 1946- (advisor), Neri, Anita Liberalesso (advisor), Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
