Abstract: The present study was carried out with the general objective of to investigation the gymnic understanding needed to the professional work to construct a proposal of the gymnastic area knowledge structure for the curriculum of physical education courses. The work was characterized as qualitative, of the descriptive type. The Delphi method was chosen among the qualitative methodological approaches used in the physical education area to be considered the most suitable for this investigation. Have participated in this study 13 Ph.D. professors that work with the gymnastic area disciplines for at least ten years and that have significative production in this area, representing, in this way, the faculty that work in the physical education professional formation in Brazil. The data collection process has happened in three phases. In the first phase it was sent to the research participants the first instrument, which was composed of a questionnaire. After the content analysis of the received answers, it was prepared a second instrument that was sent to the participants for knowledge of all opinions of the group and, thus, could opine about the obtained answers. From the second instrument, it was elaborated a third instrument, which was sent out to the research participants for them to judge again about the listed knowledge. The data was treated by the descriptive statistical analysis and also, by the methodological content analysis proposed by Bardin. The results of the investigation have indicated the gymnic knowledge necessary to the physical education professional/teacher work and were discussed from the author point of view and from the theoretical referential that supports the study, trying to establish the relation with the initial formation and the society emergent needs. In this way, it was presented a gymnastic knowledge area structure proposal for the physical education courses curriculums that was constructed starting from the limits and possibilities found in the data collection and in the new curriculum directions for the area. It was also pointed possible ways to the gymnic knowledge handling in the teachers formation, taking in consideration that the actual social necessities ask for new educational directions and, as a consequence, suggest to the Universities a new professor able to deal with the new realities of the docent practice.
