Fire is a natural phenomenon that has affected the Earth’s land surface to varying degree over the last 400 millions years. Under the climatic conditions of the Mediterranean, fire has been a recurrent component that human societies have controlled since millennia. Recently, however, following 50 years of rural depopulation, land management using fire has largely disappeared here and with forest regrowth, fire now affects a dense and often contiguous biomass. Wildfire in the Mediterranean has thus become a risk due to its high intensity and the difficulty in controlling it. It is particularly the intense, uncontrolled fires which can result in adverse environmental effects, modifying soil properties, promoting high erosion rates and hence desertification. In addition, fire endangers properties and human lives. This PhD thesis addresses some environmental aspects of wildfire with special consideration of its effects on soils. The study of the environmental aspect presented here together with social and economic studies will allow a better management of fire-affected areas and the regional planning. Fire can result in changes in vegetation, micro and macro fauna, biochemical cycles, soil properties, and hydrological and geomorphological processes due to the heat input, but also due to the environmental conditions after the loss of vegetation and the added cover with ash. Wildfire produces a sudden transformation to the characteristics and functioning of the ecosystem, and leaves an influence that can affect it for years in a very dynamic and variable way depending on multiple factors. Ash is one of the key elements affecting burned areas. In the context of this study, ash is the residue of the organic material after the fire and blankets the soil temporally with a layer of variable thickness, physical and chemical properties, which depend on fuel characteristics and fire severity. It is of major importance for the biogeochemical cycles, including the carbon cycle. It modifies soil infiltration and runoff generation, affects erosion rates, and changes physical and chemical soil properties. Even after being removed from the soil surface by slope wash, wind erosion or dissolution, ash may still affect the matter and energy cycles, and can modify the properties of soils if incorporated. Despite its implications, ash has not seen much attention in the scientific studies of wildfire and it remains one of the least understood elements of the post-fire ecosystem. In contrast, changes in soil organic matter and soil aggregation, runoff and erosion, and the recovery of vegetation, have been intensively and repeatedly studied. To date, ash has been considered largely only as an important element in the nutrient cycle and as a soil fertiliser. Very few studies have explored ash effects on soil hydrology and erosion, and from the research to date, few definitive conclusions have been obtained. Soils are essential for life, so understanding how they work and respond toenvironmental disturbances is crucial to carrying out a proper maintenance and use of them.The peculiarities of the Mediterranean climate, characterized by a very hot and dry summerseason, are the reason why forest fires and water use have been of special interest in the lastdecades in the southeast of Spain.In this PhD thesis, both issues have been addressed through the study of a soilcomponent, glomalin (a glycoprotein produced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi), which get intothe ground when hyphae die and decompose. This glycoprotein is being widely studied due toits contribution to soil carbon and nitrogen storage, its role in soil structure (through theformation of aggregates), and the sequestration of potentially toxic soil elements among others.It is also known for its sensitivity to perturbations such as changes in land management. Inconcrete, in this PhD thesis, glomalin has been studied as a soil component that can provideinformation about the status of the soil after a forest fire, and as a possible factor involved inthe development of soil water repellency, a phenomenon which can occur under naturalconditions and which is also very common as a consequence of wildfires.The general objective of this PhD thesis, "Sensitivity of glomalina to fire effects on soiland its relationship with water repellency in Mediterranean forest soils”, is to study the effectsof fires on glomalin stocks, as well as the factors involved in the appearance of water repellencyand its consequences on the microbiological community in Mediterranean forest soils. Thethesis is structured in four chapters with journal format. All chapters have been published asarticles in international impact journals such as "Land Degradation and Development" (Chapter1), "Science of the Total Environment” (Chapter 2), "Geoderma" (Chapter 3) and "Journal ofHydrology and Hydromechanics" (Chapter 4).Fire is a natural ecological factor, which was a phenomenon long before humanexistence. In fact, fire plays an important role in the maintenance of the structure andfunctionality of the ecosystems. Unfortunately, in the last decades, certain human factors, suchas agricultural abandonment and fire suppression policies among others, have provoked achange in the fire regime and intensity.Soil is a basic component of the forest ecosystem and the remaining componentsdepend on it. The immediate effect of heat and post-fire conditions cause physical, chemical andbiological changes in it. Depending on certain factors and the environmental conditions, thesechanges can last for years. Therefore, an evaluation of soil health after a fire is essential for itsproper conservation and recovery. In consequence, finding components or soil indicators ableto inform about soil evolution and recovery after a wildfire is of major importance.
