1. Rubio Garrido, Alberto. Autonomía y expresión en la arquitectura. La antinomia de la modernidad al hilo de Claude-Nicolas Ledoux.

Degree: 2018, TDX

Since Kaufmann, the “autonomy project” in architecture had to face an apparent paradox: either to subscribe to the formalist thesis to which the social commitment is established by "depoliticizing" architecture (Johnson or Rossi), or to recover the social nature of architecture, assuming the risk verified during the Avant-garde, of identifying the alternative with what is expected to be changed (Hays or Eisenman). On the one hand, modern rationalisation enabled the configuration of a social alternative, whereas its tendency towards abstraction threatened to alienate architecture from the society. In contrary to this widespread interpretation in the reception of the concept of “autonomy” in architecture, and following its early origins established by Kant, the emergence of autonomy in art is, in fact, inseparable from the ethical dimension of his social emancipation project. We shall rely on the “antinomy of taste” in Kant in order to defend that the necessity of autonomy in architecture is, first, unavoidable if we want to persist in architectural modernity and, second, that the mere possibility of autonomy in architecture requires the realization of a kind of moral expression in the work of art. However, this thesis -radicalized by Schiller and implemented by Ledoux- cannot be accepted without risks: the moralization of art easily falls on the side of absolutism as evidenced during the early twentieth century. In this regard, with the theoretical support provided by Theodor W. Adorno, the enigma as an epistemological content -opposed to the truth understood as adaequatio- acquires an internal moral status which dissolves the aporia faced by the aesthetic modernity and opens the way for the possibility of an autonomy in architecture without compromising its inherent nature. Advisors/Committee Members: Marrades Millet, Julián, Calatrava Escobar, Juan, Departament de Metafísica i Teoria del Coneixement.
