ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The study investigated whether Pentecostal spirituality is contributing to, or a hindrance to healing and wholeness in pastoral caregiving. In the quest for wholeness and healing in Pentecostal spirituality, the methodology of a literature study and hermeneutical approach was employed in this study. To determine whether Pentecostal spirituality is contributing to healing and wholeness, Chapter 2 explored the doctrinal component in Pentecostal spirituality by looking at specific themes, such as doctrine, experience, epistemology, and the cognitive component (which included a reflection on theodicy, paradigms, and schemata of interpretation), as well as the doctrine of healing from a Pentecostal perspective. Chapter 3 explored the anthropological component in Pentecostal spirituality, by reflecting on a number of key themes, namely: the notion of cura animarum (in the quest for the care and cure of the human soul); theory formation; the influence of paradigms on anthropology, and the Pentecostal view of human personhood (trichotomy). In the quest for wholeness and healing, and working towards an integrative approach to pastoral caregiving, Chapter 4 explored a number of key themes, namely: health, wholeness, and an integrative and holistic approach to pastoral caregiving. Chapter 5 provided a brief summary/outline of the main focus of each chapter, a presentation of the key research findings, the limitations of the study, a recommendation for further research, and a final conclusion.
It was found that healing encompasses much more than just physical healing and extends to various other dimensions of the human person, including the cognitive, conative, affective, as well as physical, environmental, and spiritual dimensions. Wholeness is for the ‘whole person’ and includes the cognitive, conative and affective, physical and spiritual anthropological dimensions. It also has a relational (interpersonal and intrapersonal) and ecological (cosmos) component. For Pentecostals, it is God’s will that we be made whole in every dimension of our being. This holistic approach to pastoral care is compatible with Pentecostal spirituality and seeks wholeness in each of the anthropological dimensions of the human person, but it was also further extended to include cura vitae (the healing of life itself) and cura terrae (the healing of land) (Louw, 2015), reflecting a broader focus and view. The aim of this study is to ensure that the spiritual, psychological, social, physical and anthropological needs of the human person are attended to holistically. The envisaged outcome is healing of the ‘whole person’ — which will lead to an improved quality of life. The implication of this study is for academics, theologians, and pastoral caregivers to move beyond negative stereotypes and unfair biased criticisms, and begin to take Pentecostal spirituality, and all that it has to offer, more seriously and to recognize the positive…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The difficulties attending our understanding of the experience of shame are widely
recognized. This work is concerned with the interplay between the experience of shame and
religious pathology in Korean culture, especially regarding theological anthropology.
Religious pathology implies the sick or distorted faith when people’s belief system or
contents, particularly inappropriate God-images and negative self-identity, becomes
negatively influenced due to painful experiences of shame. It was hypothesis that the
phenomenon of shame in Korean culture needs to be understood in terms of multidimensional
perspectives including psychological, sociological, socio-cultural and a theological
perspective as well. It was argued that parishioners’ biased understanding of, and response to
the experience of shame, is associated with inappropriate God-images and negative selfidentity
which hamper spiritual maturity and spiritual growth.
The empirical research reported in chapter 5 shows that the parishioners’ experience of shame
is associated with disharmony between values and expectations in a specific community. This
phenomenon has a huge impact on position (habitus; attitude; aptitude) within cultural
contexts.
The study proposes the use of a pneumatological model of understanding of God, based on
Louw’s four-stage counselling model, in order to respond constructively to an existential
problem such as shame within the Korean Presbyterian Church.

erken.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The HIV and AIDS epidemic has affected the whole South African society, including the church. The dilemma of adequate reaction to the effects of HIV andAIDS on the pastoral responsibilities of the church is posing serious questions to the church in South Africa as it deals with the care of those affected by the epidemic. The HIV and AIDS epidemic is challenging the church to re-investigate its own traditional way of help and support and to realise that the Christian faith community needs to be part of the team-approach in the fight against HIV and AIDS.A holistic approach to healing will lead us to a new and different understanding of the diakonia of the church (nuwe en anderverstaan van diakonaat). This study will investigate how care can be administered in such a way that it becomes meaningful to both the infected, affected and those involved in administering care. It will require an ecclesiology that is informed, formulated and structured from the bottom-up rather than the traditional top-down approach. It will be what we can call a ―base-community‖ ecclesiology.
This thesis will therefore, in the light of the challenges that the HIV and AIDSepidemic presents, put forward an ecclesiology formulated on the ground, a grassroots ecclesiology other than the official or traditional formal ecclesiology: an ecclesiology not only directed towards the members of the specific church (membership diakonia), but an ecclesiology focused on the broader community in which the church is located: a communal diakonia. This thesis argues that in light of the HIV and AIDSepidemic, this is a wake-up call for a new ecclesiology that will lead to the kind of diaconate described above. A bold new manner of ecclesiological being/structure is required: a new openness, frankness, boldness (parrhēsia) in dealing with HIV and AIDS. This parrhēsiawill come from the empowered members of the church as they become the caregivers in the community. Home-based care as it is practised at present runs the risk of a one-sided approach with its main focus on the physical wellbeing of the person. An ecclesiology of grassroots care and identity-formation is needed to fill this void. The research investigates how a theology of affirmation can be integrated into the system/practice of home-based care to become a meaningful part of the help or assistance given to the individual and his/her household. Furthermore, the study explores how pastoral care and counselling to the HIV positive person and his/her household can be enriched through the application of a paradigm of praxis to the least in society in home-based diakonia by applying a theology of affirmation, so as to affirm and restore dignity, give meaning to life and the process of death and ultimately provide answers to the quest for identity and affirmation through an ecclesiology of grassroots care. This study is also a call for a paradigm shift with regard to ecclesiology and diakonia in the South African church that may have a profound effect on the church in South Africa. This…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study primarily concerns itself with “HIV and AIDS as challenge to the Seventh-day Adventist Church is South Africa: A reflection on Home-Based Care” to People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA). On 01 December 2014, International AIDS Day, eNCA (eNews Channel Africa) released the staggering statistics which revealed that South Africa has the most serious HIV and AIDS epidemic in the world, with 6 million South African PLWHA in an estimated population of 54 million, whereas only 2.7 million of these PLWHA were receiving proper treatment and care. The Department of Health (DOH) reported that there were 1,000 new infections and more than 1,000 Aids-related deaths daily in 2014. Despite South Africa being the leading nation in HIV and AIDS research, the country has the highest rate of infections and disease-related deaths – less than half of the South African PLWHA are receiving treatment.
These staggering reports of the sobering reality of the South African situation on the HIV and AIDS epidemic ought to be seen as the wakeup call to faith communities in South Africa, including the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Church leaders of all denominations are faced with the same challenge of their members living with HIV and AIDS and the Seventh-day Adventist Church is not spared. The Seventh-day Adventist Church must therefore become a visible, active stakeholder in making a difference in the campaign against HIV and AIDS. The primary aim of this thesis is to examine how The Seventh-day Adventist Church in South Africa can help bring relief to the burden of illness and suffering, poverty, helplessness and shame, and empower vulnerable PLWHA and their family members through the formulation of contextual Home-Based Care programs.
The core problem of this research focuses on existing policies in the Seventh-day Adventist Church and questions the theological and ecclesiological implications for being “church” in poor communities with a lack of care facilities and health facilities. It is in this regard that the option of a Home-Based Care model surfaces. Study is given on how the Seventh-day Adventist Church in South Africa should restructure its current policies in order to shift from a clerical model to a more community oriented model of pastoral care to PLWHA. The researcher challenges the Seventh-day Adventist Church, who claims to be the church of God on earth, to live up to the light it claims to have in regard to pastoral care, healthcare and other ministries to spiritually and physically sick people, by preparing and training their lay members as volunteers in doing Home-Based Care to PLWHA in South Africa. Despite the continued advances in the fields of science, medicine and associated professional health care services, the challenges of human diseases in epidemic proportions, more specifically HIV and AIDS, still present us with a need to care for persons, families and communities afflicted with illnesses. An urgent need exists to respond to the quest for meaning in human suffering and the…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A critical reflection on the researcher’s personal story - a white Afrikaner woman and a
member of the Dutch Reformed Church - and her raised awareness regarding the devastating
effects of racism, sexism and poverty in South Africa informs the development of a
participatory pastoral praxis. The liberation of South Africa and the post-apartheid social
reality have unmasked the confessional and kerygmatic approach of practical theology,
revealing them to be supportive of dualistic thinking. This approach has frequently blinded us
from understanding the ideologies of apartheid and patriarchy and the extent and complexity
of their oppressive effects. This research is about doing theology in context and, as such
marks a radical shift in practical theology from a confessional-kerygmatic to a publichermeneutical
approach.
From a methodological perspective the hermeneutic spiral applied in theory formation
challenges the church to participate in a praxis approach that will contribute to the healing and
transformation of post-apartheid society. Feminist theology and post-structuralist theory,
within which Narrative Therapy is positioned, provide the critical lenses for viewing the social
realities of South African society. As an interdisciplinary partner to practical theology,
Narrative Therapy contributes to liberating action as expressed in a participatory praxis.
While holding the metaphor of the Shepherd as expression of God’s compassion, the
normative guiding metaphor for a participatory pastoral praxis is the parable of the Good
Samaritan. As an embodiment of God’s transformative love and care towards our neighbour,
the Good Samaritan points the way to a new way of doing pastoral care. Ten characteristics
of a participatory pastoral praxis are identified: the personal is the professional and political;
participation with the other; participation with people; participation with awareness;
participation in voicing; participation with our bodies; participation together with others;
participation in social transformation; participation in interrelatedness and participation in
doing restitution. Taken together, they make a significant contribution to the theory formation,
ethics and praxis of practical theology with a transformative and healing agenda.
The empirical research includes a contextual analysis of the main social problems confronting
post-apartheid South Africa: namely, racism, sexism, poverty and the ways in which the
HIV/AIDS pandemic interrelates with these. The researcher uses case examples from her
praxis - as therapist, community participant, teacher of Narrative Therapy and member of the
leadership of the Dutch Reformed Church - to research the transformative effect of a participatory pastoral praxis. In this respect the prophetic dimension of a participatory praxis
of care could play a decisive role within the ecclesiology of the Dutch Reformed Church.
The transformative effect of Narrative Therapy in working with survivors of childhood sexual
abuse is…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research paper set out to discover whether a Christian Spiritual perspective (within a framework of a theology of affirmation and a psychological strengths perspective of fortigenesis) on basic threatening existential issues, such as HIV/AIDS Stigma, Homophobia, etc. can help MSM to reformulate the quest for meaning and be integrated in a holistic approach to spiritual healing in order to overcome the schism in HIV/AIDS: Friend or Foe?
Setting the stage for exploring the world‟s worst global challenge within the health sector, and how it relates to the South African context for MSM. The research uncovered that MSM face the greatest challenge and burden of HIV/AIDS in many countries, however little research has focused on MSM and HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Literature links this to the fact that throughout Africa, the predominant view of same sex relationships as being un-African, sinful and an abomination.
Pointing out that for MSM, the development of God-images usually occurs during the process of growth and maturation as an individual, where a multitude of experiences are based primarily through the filter of belonging to a minority, which are seen predominantly from society as being sinful. The possible multitude of traumatic and often fearful life experiences, including the potentially highly stressful and difficult process of informing their parents and families of their sexuality, may influence their emotional experience and ultimately their God-image. The God-image of parental love, acceptance and caring may be impacted on by fear of rejection and the lack of acceptance. The development of ambivalence may strongly impact on MSM God-images, resulting in conflicted experiences and understanding of God, where the God-image could become distant and judgmental (Hoffman, 2009:15-18).
Something that is exacerbated by the stance of some belief systems promote the concept of “love the sinner, hate the sin”, which only results in MSM being ignored or having their partners/relationships rejected, thus isolating them within their own faith community. This impacts their spiritual/religious development and their participation in a non-affirming faith community can result in levels of increased internalized homonegativity (this is defined as negative attitudes to one‟s own homosexuality), causing poorer psychological health and lower self-regard.
The dignity, identity and meaning of MSM are further impacted on by their minority existence within the context of South Africa, which places various traumatic stresses on MSM. These traumatic stresses are amplified by the constant negotiation of fear regarding the contracting of HIV/AIDS or even being diagnosed with the life threatening disease.
Despite all these external and the resultant internal stressors, Graham and Kiguwa (2005) found that religion and spirituality is important to MSM-youth as it provides possible supportive structures and environments. Many of the MSM-youth believe in the Bible or ancestors (or even both), yet have chosen to adapt…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study, in addition to problematizing a one-dimensional approach to health and well-being within the HIV and AIDS discourse, also aims to highlight the need and promote the idea for integrative community pastoral care as fundamental in responding to the HIV and AIDS epidemic. In developing such a framework for an integrative approach to healing and care, it becomes clear that a number of paradigmatic shifts in pastoral care are called for.
In the past most of the prevention and intervention strategies within the discourse on healing within the HIV and AIDS epidemic, focused on the people living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA) and the medical science in its search for cure and effective antiretroviral medication. Little attention use to be given to issues of care as the primary focus appeared to have been on behaviour change strategies. However, as the complex nature of the epidemic and its impacts became more apparent, it gradually dawned on all disciplines that the virus entails more than an individual ailment as a medical concern. With the realization that the epidemic penetrates the quality of life and the basic structures for livelihood and meaningful living on all levels, came the acknowledgement that it has become a systemic and community issue. Any endeavour to be engaged with the epidemic should therefore shift from a merely personal (individual focus) and a medical (pharmaceutical focus) approach, to a community approach. Healing and prevention must also become a systemic and communal endeavour, and thus the reason to connect, in this research project, healing with a community approach to the HIV and AIDS epidemic.
In the process of developing a framework for integrative care and counselling, the study explores the notions of health and well-being and provides a theological framework for understanding these concepts from a community perspective. This framework necessitates a number of paradigmatic shifts, particularly with regards to understanding the ecclesial identity of the church as a community of care. Both the understanding of health and well-being and that of an identity of care culminates from the understanding of God‘s passionate involvement in the human predicament of suffering, as implied by a theopaschitic approach. In order to develop an inclusive framework of care to be taken up in the ecclesial identity of the church, a number of metaphors for a community of care are explored as alternatives to the traditional kerygmatik model of the church.

The concept of Ũtugi within the HIV and AIDS pandemic : a pastoral assessment of the ecclesial praxis of the Anglican Church in Kenya.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis deals with the concept of Ũtugi in relation to the HIV and AIDS pandemic and its contribution to the ecclesial praxis of the Anglican Church of Kenya. The thesis scrutinizes the HIV and AIDS context in Kenya, examines the origins, the nature, the characteristics and the definition of Ũtugi and its role in socio-economic, political, cultural, moral and religious life of the Agĩkũyũ community in Central Kenya and assesses the ecclesial praxis of the Anglican Church of Kenya. This concern is prompted by the need for the Anglican Church of Kenya to marshal Ũtugi (traditional resources) to complement Christian hospitality (church resources), to enhance human dignity of PLWHA and to fight the HIV and AIDS pandemic. By employing a hermeneutical tool as a praxis approach to pastoral care and counselling to interpret theological and assess the Agĩkũyũ cultural concepts and using a non-empirical research method (a qualitative research) based on conceptual analysis, the study explores critically the role of Ũtugi within the context of HIV and AIDS and its appropriateness as a tool for pastoral care and counselling in the Anglican Church of Kenya. The study poses the following research questions: In which way can the Agĩkũyũ concept of Ũtugi be used to create a healing space? How can Ũtugi be used to reframe the prevailing ecclesiological paradigms applied by the Anglican Church of Kenya? How can Ũtugi as a cultural concept help the Anglican Church of Kenya to become relevant and contextual in her endeavour to respond to the challenges posed by the HIV and AIDS pandemic in the twenty-first century?
The thesis unveils that the principles of Ũtugi can complement Christian hospitality to network and help the church to carry the burden of PLWHA, thus, enhancing their human dignity, sharing their joy and comfort, and journeying with them in their pain, sorrow and healing. It was also found that Ũtugi as a contextual model which is culturally rooted, is relevant to the Agĩkũyũ people and that it can help in transforming the existing ecclesial praxis of the Anglican Church of Kenya. Drawing from Daniël Louw's existential model for spiritual healing, the study assesses the appropriateness of Ũtugi as a model for pastoral care and counselling to PLWHA. It is revealed that Ũtugi is not only a paradigm that can augment their physical, social, psychological, economic, moral and spiritual aspects but that it has the capacity to deal with the existential threat of anxiety, guilt and shame, disillusionment and anger, despair and doubt, helplessness and vulnerability. Thus it can enable them to shift from their existential threats to a position of love, care, support, compassion, accommodativeness, liberation and hope.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The aim of this thesis is to identity whether condoms are being stigmatized, and to investigate the current perceptions, attitudes and beliefs about condom use in relation to the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Through the use of Richard Osmer’s model for research in Practical Theology, the study starts off with a Descriptive-Empirical task to investigate what is going on regarding the impact of society’s perceptions on condom use. The second part of the study commences the Interpretive task investigating why the perceptions about condoms exist, exploring the impact and dynamics of stigmatization; looking at sex, sexuality, sin and taboos relative to stigmatization. The Normative task explores what ought to be the perceptions of condom use by using Louw’s (2008) theory, an integrative Christian spiritual approach to Sexual Ethics, to explore the sacred space of sexuality, evaluating human sexuality and the human body, also looking at marriage and sexuality. Lastly, the Pragmatic task looks at the possible ways that we might respond to stigmatization, recommending certain practical conclusions within a pastoral counselling view to move towards de-stigmatization. These approaches include discussion on relevant HIV education and awareness programmes, pastoral care and counselling methods and programmes for people living with HIV and AIDS, and a pastoral approach with a Jesus as model for pastoral counselling. These collectively and conclusively explain the paradigm shift of letting the theology of the resurrection state a theological critique on stigmatization. In conclusion, the thesis argues that people do hold stigmatized perceptions about condoms and HIV and AIDS and these perceptions are grounded in attitudes and beliefs that are products of cultural and religious societal processes. The study proved that educational interventions need to be adapted to be more contextually relevant in order to be effective as a practical approach to stigmatization, as the study proved that having medical, educational knowledge about HIV and AIDS and prevention interventions do not necessarily result in saver sexual practice. Ultimately, pastoral approaches should be implemented in the hope to offer a movement towards destigmatization, not only of condoms, but HIV and AIDS and people living with HIV and AIDS. Thus, the proposal for a pastoral spiritual approach in process of destigmatization based upon a theological model. In this regard, the theological model is based on the notion of the theologia resurrectionis.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation explores the topic of epistemology and the use of Scripture in pastoral care and
counseling. It examines the epistemological foundations of all theology and ministry in order to
provide clarity and guidance for pastoral care within our current early twenty-first century
context. The key problem that is implied in the topic ‘Epistemology and the use of Scripture in
pastoral care and counseling’ is the following: What normative and methodological role should
the Bible play in the counseling situation and what is the basis for this role? This problem
essentially deals with the interaction between biblical and extra-biblical data in the pastoral
encounter and how they are to be related. The following dynamics exist in systemic
relationship: understanding and use of Scripture; epistemological foundations; theological
method; ministry practices.
The key assumption is that theology and pastoral care must deal with epistemological concerns,
and that failure to do so has negative consequences. An indissoluble link exists between theory
and practice: the elements of epistemology, methodology and practice should be consistent and
in line with each other. This serves as a vital criterion for the integrity and validity of the various
theories and practices that are examined and proposed in this dissertation.
Pastoral care and biblical counseling are examined in terms of these dynamics.
Comprehensiveness in epistemology, basic theological method, and pastoral practice is
recommended. This is proposed as the best response to specific challenges posed by our
current postmodern and pluralistic context.
This research argues that it is possible to have a comprehensive and inclusive approach to
knowledge, with a related comprehensive and organic practice of biblical counseling, while
retaining an emphasis on the uniqueness of Jesus Christ and the key normative role of the
Scriptures, all within a valid epistemological grounding.
The issue of validation or warrant for this proposal is neither strictly foundational nor relative. It
exists somewhere in between and finds its locus ultimately in God. Such a stance is firmly
placed within the dynamics of faith as it interacts with reason and experience. There is therefore
no ultimate, empirical proof that can be given, but this is true for knowledge and truth claims in
all disciplines and realms of knowledge.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The problematic field of investigation for the dissertation was a focused concern for the pastoral care of bereaved human beings in the context of significant cultural shifts now shaping the twenty-first century. Deritualization was identified as a significant interdisciplinary concern for bereavement care practitioners. The objective of the research was the development of a practical theology of compassionate caregiving for the bereaved with deference to the problem of deritualization. The theoretical framework was guided by the Oxford Interdisciplinary Research model and the Loyola Institute of Ministries model of practical theology. The study was designed for applied research for funeral directors and vocational pastors utilizing qualitative research methods. Hermeneutical and empirical components addressed six research questions through two domains of inquiry: disciplinary perspectives and educational dynamics of bereavement caregiving. Using the method of hermeneutics to critically evaluate the first two research questions, three disciplinary fields of knowledge were examined and integrated from the perspective of pastoral care: funeral service, bereavement psychology, and practical theology. Each discipline individually converged upon meaningful caregiving, meaning-reconstruction, and meaning-reframing as significant modes of bereavement care. Using ethnographic semi-structured interviews to critically evaluate the remaining four research questions, data were collected from a Christian university and a mortuary college. The interview questionnaire included twenty-five main questions organized in four parts: Philosophy of Education, Hermeneutics of Bereaved Families, Care of Bereaved Families, and Encounter of Bereaved Families. The study utilized two cycles of qualitative coding techniques to report the findings of each participating school. A hybrid form of in vivo and holistic coding as well as a second cycle of pattern coding distilled the interview responses into actionable statements that reinforced bereavement caregiving. By synthesizing all of the findings, a compelling case was made for a paradigm of comforting presence supported by principles from a Louwian perspective of practical theology, including theological anthropology, promissiotherapy, bipolarity, and hermeneutics. The study connected a philosophy of meaning-reframing and a paradigm of comforting presence to a meta-theoretical framework within a narrative approach to care. The research elucidated an interdisciplinary understanding that contributed toward a compassionate practical theology of caregiving for the bereaved.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: AIDS is stigma, disgrace, hatred, hardship, abandonment, isolation, exclusion, prohibition, persecution, poverty, privation. AIDS is a metaphor. It is a threat, a tragedy, a blight, a blot, a scar, a stain, a plague, a scourge, a pestilence, a demon, killer, rampant, rampaging, murderer. It is made moral. It is condemnation, deterrence, retribution, punishment, a sin, a lesson, a curse, rebuke, judgement (Pillay, 2008:21).
The above quotation represents societal perceptions, discourses and responses to the AIDS pandemic. Sadly, in the early days of this pandemic, some theologians and churches held the above-mentioned perception, creating the fear in sufferers of the disease that they might be judged. Communities, families and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) also still hold this view. The aim of this study is to investigate the judgemental attitudes in pastoral care and spiritual counselling for women living with HIV/AIDS.
One of the aspects that contribute to the spread of the HIV pandemic is the stigma attached to it as it is the stigma that causes the silence. This study aims to explore the definition of stigma and investigate its causes and results as well as looking into the judgemental attitudes of the community, church, society, family and counselling of the HIV/AIDS sufferer, their identity crisis and their question of meaning.
Furthermore, the study aims to investigate the theological reflection on the notion of God, through the doctrine of judge ment (how God is presented as a judge in both the Old and the New Testaments), as well as Old and New Testaments’ views on illness. Using these sources, this study investigates whether or not HIV is a punishment from God. Using case studies, the resurrection of hope and the role of hope in a person was explored. This study also investigates how pastoral care and spiritual counselling can empower and bring hope and healing to PLWHA. This was done through the use of Louw’s five-phase model of counselling PLWHA, an externalising method from a narrative approach.
This study seeks to determine the judgemental attitudes in pastoral care and counselling towards women living with the HI virus in the local township of Lwandle. It is said that the people most vulnerable to the HI virus and most infected are women and especially those living in the poor townships of South Africa. Their lack of education and poverty put these women in a more dangerous situation than their counterparts. In the township churches, women are in the majority. This study speculates about the role of pastoral care and counselling in empowering these women, in particular those living with HIV and AIDS and seeks to explore how the faith community, society and their families judge these women. It also investigates how pastoral care can dispute irrational and unrealistic constructs applied to the interpreta tion of the pandemic and how the Christian community can contribute to constructive pro cesses of de-stigmatisation.
In the early days of the pandemic, the church regarded…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As humans we are thinking beings. This thesis introduces the topic of “destructive thinking.” This is described rather broadly as any type of thinking that is considered counterproductive, harmful, and maladaptive or has a damaging and negative effect on the individual’s identity, relationships, social context and worldview. Of particular interest to this study are cognitive distortions; thinking errors; irrational beliefs; and inappropriate God-images. It was noted that most of our everyday thinking takes place unconsciously and that cognitive distortions or thinking errors are common occurrences. These are of particular interest to this study since destructive thoughts are viewed as facilitating emotional distress, psychopathology, inappropriate God-images and faith pathology. Sometimes we fall into a negative rut or just get stuck in our ways of thinking, feeling and acting. The idea of changing cognitions to change feelings is a central feature of this thesis. The primary goal is to facilitate the restructuring of destructive thoughts.
The main focus of this thesis is on developing a theological understanding and perspective of ‘destructive thinking’ in the context of pastoral care. I therefore explore the type of thoughts that the pastoral caregiver should look for that could pose as ‘risk factors’ inhibiting spiritual growth and spiritual well-being. I identify and encourage the development of thoughts that are more likely to promote spiritual healing, spiritual growth and a mature faith. To accomplish this task, I begin with an exploration of ‘destructive thinking’ in the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy literature (CT & REBT respectively) (Chapter 2). This is followed by an exploration of ‘destructive thinking’ within the interplay between Religion and Christian Spirituality (Chapter 3). I then propose a pastoral model of spiritual healing and wholeness that could assist pastoral caregivers to understand and address “destructive thinking” in a constructive and responsible way (Chapter 4).
This study concluded that thoughts are at the centre of our functioning as thinking beings. If our thinking is ‘destructive’, the consequence on our spiritual and psychological lives may be devastating. Our thoughts have the ability to destroy and transform. In reviewing the potential impact of destructive thoughts on the individual’s spirituality and spiritual well-being, a number of destructive types of religious thinking are identified, such as inappropriate God-images. In assessing the relationship between one’s God-image and psychological and spiritual well-being, a link between one’s thoughts (cognitions), spiritual and psychological well-being is suggested.
As an outcome of this research, I propose a holistic approach to destructive thinking that takes into account one’s faith, spiritual maturity, beliefs, cognitions and relationships (with oneself, others and God). The psycho-pastoral approach proposed takes the role of cognition seriously. It offers an excellent and practical method to understanding…

Prevention within a pastoral strategy : assessing the ABC-model with reference to the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Swaziland.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis critically analyses the appropriateness and effectiveness of the ABC model in the HIV/AIDS prevention within the context of Swaziland. According to Louw (2008:423), the ABC model stands for the following: A = Abstinence, B = Be faithful and C = use Condoms. According to Green and Herling (2007:1) the ABC model has gained the attention of many countries. The attempt of this model in HIV prevention was to “aim at empowering people through value-based programs to basically abstain from sex as long as possible, to be faithful to one intimate partner and to use condoms correctly and consistently” (De la Porte 2006:79).
The assessment of the HIV/AIDS virus in 1983-1984 came as a shock. It was difficult for the church to know at that time how to respond. Some of the responses pointed to the virus as punishment of God. Gradually the church started to become involved in the pandemic. From a Christian spirituality perspective it was argued that the so called ABC model could be viewed as a means of remedy within a prevention approach. The cultural issues as well as human sexuality factors have been discovered to be an obstacle in the ABC model in playing a progressive role in Swaziland.
The cultural factors that prevent the ABC model from accomplishing effective results are listed in the final report of (Whiteside et al. 2006: 18-19): bunganwa (having multiple sexual partners; a cultural practice of male married and unmarried to have many girlfriends); kungenwa (levirate or wife inheritance); a widow is given in marriage to marry the brother of her deceased husband without the consent of the women which exposes women to the HIV virus. This practice is done without the consent of the women. Kujuma (occasional overnight visits between unmarried lovers); kuhlanta (a young girl bearing the children of her infertile sister); kushenda (extramarital relationships); kulamuta (a man having a sexual relationship with a younger sister of his wife); and sitsembu (polygamy, one man with more than one wife); this is a common cultural practice found in many African countries due to gender inequality (Chitando 2009:26).
This has led to Swaziland being seriously affected by the HIV/AIDS virus (Rupiya 2006:66). The high rate of infection is frightening in a small country with a population of 1 million. As Bishop M, Mabuza, the Anglican bishop indicated, the nation‟s existence is threatened. (Rosenow 2011: 32). Therefore the researcher proposed a pastoral model which gives dignity to human and adds the spiritual dimension of healing in the pastoral care and counselling. There is an urgent need for church leaders to be empowered to face the HIV/AIDS with knowledge that the pandemic is not a punishment for promiscuous people. The theology of sexuality emphasises the responsibility in every sexual engagement for people to be conscious to whatever decision they take.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Existential crises are now intertwined with the paradigmatic framework and noetic system of people’s lives in their search for meaning, significance and value. In this respect, a close connection exists between thought processes and values. The core issue in the research is to unlock the hermeneutical connection between thinking patterns, philosophical systems, and meaning structures at the level of noetic
understanding. The basic hypothesis is that spiritual healing is realized within the qualitative interaction between systemic-hermeneutic networks and the attempt to determine how certain thinking patterns within frameworks, especially schemas of interpretation, the behaviour and attitudes of people regarding the meaning of life is determined. In this regard philosophical counselling in pastoral care can play a crucial therapeutic role. Philosophical counselling differs from Rational Emotive Therapy in the sense that meaning perception comprises more than rational thought categories (cognition) with the possible pathology of irrational thoughts. Sense meaning refers to attitudes as determined by idea-moderate wisdom systems such as embedded in cultural convention, attitudes and value systems that motivate behaviour, and a form of calling and commitment determined by existential pathos. The connection between religious thought and the dimension of God-images must be investigated. In this regard the research works with the basic presupposition that philosophical counselling can play a supportive role in a pastoral diagnosis that focuses on distinguishing between appropriate and inappropriate God-images. It is to examine how ideas about God’s involvement in human suffering (theodicy question) processes suffering within existential realities. Particular attention is given to how P. Raabe’s four-stage model of philosophical counselling can play a role in pastoral care and the making of pastoral diagnosis. Therefore, to look at the connection between faith, hope and meaning. We also look at the dynamics between noetic philosophy, life convictions, life perspectives and processes of conceptualization in a pastoral epistemology. In this respect the research joins the classical connection between wisdom and insight with the tradition of cura animarum (soul care) and the current approach in pastoral theology to enlarge cura animarum with cura vitae (the healing of life).

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study investigated the feasibility of the sanctuary model as a possible theological anthropological framework for diagnostic and treatment purposes in clinical pastoral practice. The Wilderness tabernacle matched the criteria for qualifying as a prototype sanctuary. The Wilderness tabernacle contains all the invariant components representative of all biblical sanctuaries, making it suitable as a model from which to launch the research. The building-sanctuary as a metaphorical ‘body’ for God was analogously linked with similar concepts in the human body-sanctuary in accordance with Paul’s sanctuary-related anthropological terms.
The detailed descriptions in the book of Exodus as well as in the book of Hebrews provided a sound biblical foundation from which to launch the investigation of the sanctuary related concepts. The literature study threaded through the hermeneutical spiral from the text to the immediate and wider contexts of both the Old and New Testaments. The spiral continued through historic and systematic theology, landing in current applications in practical theology. In order to expand on the sanctuary metaphor for application in the praxis of clinical engagements in hospital and general pastoral caregiving, it is argued that the theological component in ministry and compassionate care should be supplemented by a pneumatological perspective on soul care and human embodiment. Thus, the proposal to supplement incarnation theology with inhabitational theology (the pneumatological dimension in a praxis and ministerial approach).
The integrated sanctuary model developed from the analogous building-body investigation proved suitable as a theological anthropological framework, with indicators of Christian spirituality, suitable for diagnostic and treatment purposes in clinical practice. The visual aspects of the model aid the graphical representation of the spiritual indicators, for ease of interpretation and diagnosis. The indicators of Christian spirituality were presented along a spectrum of options shaped by historic interpretations of church doctrine and liturgy. The spectrum approach provides a broader platform from which patients can describe and interpret their responses to God within the therapeutic process.
The study clarified a few concepts. Firstly, the sanctuary model provides a clear metaphoric trajectory of the pathway through the beginning and process of salvation. The pathway, however, does not give details of the lived experience of the patient, and this means that everyone has a unique story to tell of their divine-human encounter. Secondly, the impact of salvation is associated with a design alteration in the sanctuary model. The ontological and theological significance of this alteration is understood through the investigation of the tearing of the temple veil at Christ’s death, analogously associated with Christ’s flesh and the lifting of the veil for believers through salvation. Open access to God is likened to a circumcision of the heart for the enlightenment…

Compassion fatigue : pastoral care to HIV and AIDS caregivers within the realm of the healing professions.
Degree: MTh, Practical Theology and Missiology, 2014, Stellenbosch University

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This dissertation aims to address the phenomenon of compassion fatigue within the scenario -
of the HIV and AIDS pandemic in South Africa where an estimated 5-6 million people are
living with HIV and AIDS. One in every three patients is hospitalised at some stage of their
sickness and sufferers of the pandemic come into contact with someone that gives care to
HIV and AIDS infected persons, whether in a hospital, a clinic, in counselling or a hospice.
Professional stress and emotional fatigue is an inherent feature of the life of caregivers, and
there is growing evidence is that it is on the increase.
Caregivers are generally compassionate people and the compassion that they have and share
with suffering people can be depleted . Caregivers become fatigued by the plight and the
situation that never lets up hence the concept compassion fatigue. In this regard, the meaning
of this concept as applied to HIV and AIDS caregivers in the healing and helping professions
in hospital care (chaplaincy) and different clinical settings was the focus of the research.
Compassion fatigue relates to professional stress and can impair professional competency
and performance within pastoral caregiving. The phenomenon was studied to distinguish
between compassion fatigue burnout/burn up and vicarious traumatisation. A more
comprehensive understanding of these concepts will help to clarify current misconceptions.
Aspects that necessitate a closer look are whether compassion fatigue is fundamentally stress
related or a kind of depletion within the self of the pastoral helper. Could it be some kind of
affective exhaustion, or is it related fundamentally to the overexposure to human suffering?
Is compassion fatigue then suffering related?
The study focuses on the challenges that confront caregivers in the HIV and AIDS field.
How can these challenges pose an existential threat to their being-function and human
identity? The study also explores how the theology of the cross (from a pastoral approach)
can assist caregivers to deal with the question of meaning in the suffering that their patients
(and they) may experience.
Research questions included how the phenomenon of compassion fatigue should be
understood as an inherent feature of the life of caregivers to HIV and AIDS sufferers, and
what caregiving should imply to the caregivers (“wounded healers”).
What is clear is that those caregivers very definitely also need care. A viable possibility to
render meaningful help to depleted caregivers is to take them out of the working place and
give them time, space and means to become whole again. A retreat environment is indicated as a form of recuperation for caregivers. At this stage the study amounts to only first steps in
that direction and emphasises the need to investigate the subject further.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Motivated by the observation that children living in the Western Cape face challenges relating to methamphetamine (tik) abuse, this research attempts to develop and propose a strategy that can be used in preventing mid-adolescents from engaging in tik use. To develop this strategy, a contextual analysis and hermeneutical process of the life of mid- adolescents and the environment in which tik abuse is occurring was initially undertaken. Through a contextual analysis of children living in Lavender Hill and surrounding areas, it was discovered that most children were attracted to tik due to the influence of modern technology, rampant poverty, the cheap cost of the drug, dysfunctionality of families, influence of gangs and lack of recreation facilities.
Acknowledging that adolescence is an important stage in the formation of the character of any individual, this research attests that adolescents who use and abuse tik are those who do not have an enabling family and societal environment. It is suggested in this research that the Church can play a pivotal role in creating a socio-spiritual environment that would enable adolescents to develop themselves in such a manner that they do not need to use tik, or any other drug for that matter. This research thus develops a prevention strategy for dealing with tik abuse during mid- adolescence. This preventive strategy centres on the Church being of service to others. Based on a literature research conducted on the Lavender Hill community of the Cape Flats, this research proposes practical recommendations that could help different Christian churches in the fight against methamphetamine use by mid-adolescents. These recommendations attempt to involve different members of the community in the spirit that John Mbiti encapsulates in the proverb ―We are therefore I am‖. In this all- inclusive endeavour, this research supposes that if a community is properly functioning, it is possible for it to weed out unwanted elements in a manner that protects all its members, particularly the young.
Vandaar die keuse vir ‘n kwalitatiewe benadering in aansuiting by ‘n pastoraal-hermeneutiese metodologie.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The goal of this study was to investigate the driving force behind family conflicts, its relation to change in gender roles, male power abuse, and their impact on Ovawambo family life.
Firstly, this research indicates that Ovawambo males are trained to be breadwinners, heads of families, owners of family properties, supervisors for their wives and children, and protectors of their families and the entire community. Secondly, the research indicates that both have also influenced the masculine identity of these males. The missionaries, as well as colonialism, promoted Western patriarchy, justified male dominance and reinforced the power of the male as the head of the family and exclusive holder of authority in the family, community and the state. The direct and indirect participation of men in the struggle for Namibian independence also possibly influenced them to apply power and threats. However, this study also indicates that Ovawambo males are under the influence of the modern mass media, which reflect and reinforce gender stereotypes and portray males as controlling or leading characters who tend to dominate women in relationships. Thirdly, this study indicates that the rapid socio-economic and political change, which took place in Namibia after independence, also directly affected Ovawambo male and female relationships. Through law reforms, gender roles were redefined and laws for gender equality were introduced. These laws (the Married Persons' Equality Act, Family Law on Rape and Domestic Violence and Maintenance Act) challenged the male-dominant norms; thus, the men feel that law reforms favoured only the women.
The second purpose of this study was to examine whether a pastoral-anthropological and theological understanding of God's vulnerability could help pastoral care to address the problem of the Ovawambo male identity within the cultural setting of Namibian males and the notion of power abuse.
In order to reframe male identity through a theological understanding of God‟s power, the researcher selected the theopaschitic interpretation of the theology of the cross. The theopaschitic approach renders God's power, in terms of the Pauline notion of astheneia, as weakness and compassionate vulnerability. The value of theopaschitic thinking, in terms of God's praxis, is based on a shift from the substantial approach in theological reflection to the relational and encounter paradigm. Through appropriate understanding of the fatherhood of God, Ovawambo men can appreciate their power and ability to enrich relationships, rather than destroy. It is argued that, the power of God interpreted as “weakness” and “vulnerability”, can contribute to a paradigm change in the interpretation of male identity within the cultural setting of the Ovawambo. The paradigm shift emanating from this theological understanding of power, is from “threat power” (the need to control, to abuse, to dominate) to “intimate power” (the need to comfort, to be compassionate and understanding and to bestow intimacy and love within…

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In this study the process of healing and reconciliation between the victim and the
offender in a post-TRC period in South Africa is being investigated with a view to the
challenge it poses to pastoral care. The focus is specifically on the post-TRC period
rather than the period during which the TRC operated. The post-TRC period is a
period where the truth about the apartheid past is partially known, where guilt and
mourning are part of the offender's struggle, where suffering, in all areas of life, is part
of the victims survival, where there is an understanding of the emotions victims and
offenders experience, where restitution and reconstruction create a new vision and
orientation for victims and offenders and where the church is able to interpret the past,
present and future in order make healing and reconciliation a reality. To accomplish
healing and reconciliation between victims and offenders in the post-TRC period is
regarded as crucially important in order to ensure that the atrocities of the past, in some
form or another, will not be repeated.
To ensure that healing and reconciliation between the victim and the offender is
accomplished on a personal and a public level, it is necessary to gain a clear
understanding of the practical situation of the victim and the offender. It was found that
the terms "victim" and "offender" have to be conceived in a comprehensive way in view
of the socio-political context of South Africa, and that guilt forms a core element, which
calls for great sensitivity and empathy on the part of pastoral care. Within this
comprehensive understanding it was also found that guilt is not to be conceived and
explained merely psychologically and socially, but also theologically. For this reason it
is crucial to conceive of victims and offenders within their context and to comprehend
the real impact of guilt, suffering and mourning. Although these experiences take place
on different levels, they form an indispensable indicator for achieving healing and
reconciliation in South Africa (chapter 2).
For reconciliation and healing to be realized between victim and offender it is essential,
furthermore, that both should face the truth of what occurred in the past. In this regard
it is necessary that truth should not be considered as mere verifiable facts. Rather, truth
should be conceived as a process of interpretation aimed at the revealing of meaning within certain relations, contexts and experiences. Apart from having a liberating effect,
truth is also a prerequisite for reconciliation (chapter 3).
Subsequently, the influence of pastoral theologies on healing and reconciliation between
victim and offender is discussed. It was found that pastoral care, to render a significant
contribution to healing and reconciliation in South Africa, should make the paradigmatic
shift from an individual client-centred pastoral approach to a hermeneutic cultural
approach. It is essential for healing and reconciliation to be broadened from a mere

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research was to determine what the influence of the God-image of
parishioners within the Korean Presbyterian Church is on their faith and ability to come to terms
meaningfully with the crisis of suffering. With the view to making a pastoral diagnosis and the
process of assessment, a pastoral hermeneutics was applied.
The basic hypothesis implemented is that inappropriate God-images, exacerbated by the
religious-cultural context of the Presbyterian Church in Korea, play an important role in the
parishioners' inability to come to terms meaningfully with crises and suffering. In this respect, it
was found that Shamanism, Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, amongst others, profile the
dominant religious paradigm that functions among members. This cultural context gives rise to
a concept of God that applies the theological presupposition of an almighty, fearful supreme
being who controls and is in command of everything - even death. In this regard, the concepts
of punishment and judgment play a decisive role. Within theodicy, God is viewed as the
ultimate cause of evil. Thus, a merciless God (Ch 'unbeol) is the inevitable cause of suffering.
The research found that, in Korea, theodicy relates to the monotheistic concept of a "supreme
god" (HanunumIHananim), as well as the punitive component in the category of omnipotence
(Ch 'unbeoIIChunneung). Because of a causal paradigm (scheme of cause and effect),
manipulation is a strong factor in the Koreans' concept of faith and coping with suffering. This
gives rise to a form of "pathology of faith": the manipulation of God with the view to material
and health benefits. This hampers maturity in faith. In order to understand the theological concepts of judgment and power, we present the exegesis
of relevant biblical texts with the view to the development of a theology of compassion. In this
respect, we discuss the theological theories of four theologians, that is the existential concept of
a theology of the cross (Luther); the ontological-trinitarian concept of a theology of the cross
(Moltmann); the dialectic-emotional pain theology of Kitamori; and Louw's pastoralhermeneutic
understanding of the cross within the framework of his promissio-therapy.
This study suggests a paradigm shift away from a punitive judgmental paradigm to a sensitive
compassionate paradigm. This implies a radical transformation from a hierarchical concept of
power to power as a category of sympathy and identification that demonstrates God's
compassion in suffering.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Violent crime in South Africa in general and on the Cape Flats in particular, is a very
complex phenomenon. This phenomenon has various historical, sociopolitical and
economic roots.
Furthermore, violent crime has a direct as well as indirect impact on the functioning of
faith communities within societies. Congregations and churches do not function in
isolation from the rest of society. Theology, and more specifically pastoral care, must be
seriously concerned with the problems experienced by the community at large.
A pastoral strategy should therefore move away from a spirituality that only focus on the
impact of violence on individuals and families. Because violent crime is a systemic
phenomenon, a socio-systemic approach should be followed, in which the impact of
violent crime on faith communities should be analyzed in order to create a holistic
model.
In Chapter 1 we look at the reasons for violence. We focus on the appearance of crime,
the relationship between aggression and crime. Different types of aggression as well as
some underlying causes of aggression are discussed.
In Chapter 2 we focus on crime as a national phenomenon. Certain historical roots of
the current "culture of violence" are discussed. We also look at the impact of the political
transition since 1990 on the socio-economic and moral situation in the country.
In Chapter 3 we take a closer look at the situation on the Cape Flats. Particular attention
is given to the issue of gangsterism, which in a certain sense has become synonymous
with the Cape Peninsula.
In Chapter 4 the trauma of violent crime on communities is the focus of discussion.
Results of a victim survey in Cape Town are utilized. Violence against women and
children enjoy special attention. The effect of violent crime on faith communities is
highlighted.
In the last chapter we try to put forward some guidelines for a theory of practice for the
pastoral care of people living on the Cape Flats, using traditional-historic and current
resources. We propose a holistic model with a systemic approach.
We choose a theory of practice based upon an eco-hermeneutic model, which implies
the following:
The interpretation of the salvation of God to people (hermeneutic) within the reality
(existence) of their daily lives (systemic). We indicate a few areas for long term, preventative building up and healing intervention
and conclude with the results of this research.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research seeks to establish whether the members of the Seventh-day Adventist
Church in South Africa have a characteristic personality type and temperament that
relates to their style of spirituality. Style of spirituality here refers to all spiritual
behaviour in a broad sense - how they pray, worship, use the Bible, care about others,
relate to social needs, care about the environment, administer and organize their
church activities, etc. This study does not deal with what they believe, but rather
focuses on how they believe. This research further seeks to establish what impact
participant's God-image has upon their level of spiritual maturity, if any at all. To
what extent does one's personality and temperament influence spiritual maturity and
God-image?
What instruments were used? I used the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator to measure
personality and temperament, the Personal Orientation Inventory of Everett Shostrom
to measure levels of self-actualization and psychological maturity, the Faith Maturity
Scale of Benson, Donahue, and Erickson, to measure faith maturity, and the Christian
Preference Profile scale, which I developed to measure preferences of Christian
religiosity, which also gave an indication of God-image.
How was the study conducted? I visited approximately 22 SDA churches in the
Western Cape and distributed the inventories to willing participants myself. I
explained the purpose of the research and how to complete the inventories.
Participants were requested to complete it at home and return it the next week. I
made use of two supervised students who helped to mark the answer sheets and
capture the data. What were the findings? The personality type of the SDA laity was more introverted,
compared to a similar study indicating that SDA clergy were more extraverted. The
most significant finding was that the dominant temperament was sensing/judging
(SJ=70%), slightly higher than that for the clergy. The self-actualizing levels were
relatively low - the two main measures, time competency and locus of control
measured both in the non-actualizing range, as well as three of the ten sub-scales,
relating to a rigid implementation of values, a pessimistic view of humanity, and a
lack of acceptance of synergy between opposite characteristics. The faith maturity
levels were slightly above the average, and were low on three of the eight measures,
relating to integration of faith and life, social concerns, and involvement in social and
environmental issues. The religious preference scale indicated a dominant relational
style, followed by a dependent, personal, evangelical style, and a bureaucratic
organizational style of religious preference.
Some of the main characteristics of the SDA profile were a resistance to change,
preservation of the status quo, stable, able administrators, favour a hierarchical,
bureaucratic structure, substance-oriented rather than relationship-oriented, preserving
their identity is a high priority, and is evidenced in preserving…

The interplay between God-images and healing in pastoral ministry : engaging an African spirituality.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study can as well be termed as "an attempt to interpref' pastoral care and
counseling methods and modules in an African understanding. For this reason, the study
engages concepts, metaphors and images that reflect an African understanding of pastoral
ministry. It is argued that pastoral ministry will be enriched more by accommodating an
African spirituality and cosmology that usually influences the world view of African
people on God, life and the cosmic life-force.
The study attempts to work with God-images that will help people to gain meaning in
moments of pain and suffering, and much more also that will help them appropriate faith
to life situations in a more meaningful way. Thus the study gives attention to defming
God-images in light of pain and suffering within a given pastoral care situation. Two
God-images are therefore proposed for use in a pastoral care setting in Africa, namely,
God as a friend (Mubwezi) and God as companion (woyenda naye).
The study proposes a working model that can be used by pastoral ministry in the process
of assessment of God-images. It is argued that unless pastoral ministry undertakes to
work with models that are going to help African people come to terms with situations of
pain and suffering, the work of pastoral ministry will be limited to a large extent. For this
reason, the study proposes that pastoral ministry should reckon with African cultural
values that are always expressed through metaphors and symbols. It is argued further that
pastoral ministry should work with Christian rituals, such as Holy Communion, Baptism
and the Cross which are going to help African people understand the involvement of God
in their lives and also in times of pain and suffering.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die navorsing is 'n poging om 'n pastorale hermeneutiek te ontwikkel wat in die prosesse van heling rekening hou met die eiesoortigheid van 'n Afrika-konteks. Vandaar die fokus

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis is an attempt to present a prop~r modd and methodology of pastoral care &mu
counselling of children. Chapter I starts with the concept of childhood and traces the history of
child care and examines the present situation of pastoral care and counselling. The importance
and necessity of pastoral care and counselling of children is emphasized. Chapter 2 locates
pastoral care and counselling of children under the umbrella of Practical Theolob'Y· It proposes
an interdisciplinary model and argues th<:t pastoral care is a theological issue. In chapter 3 the
ancient Israelite society is examined 11s an example of a therapeutic environment for growing
children. Her.~ the family provided a social structure through which children experienced a
strong sense of belonging, security, love and self-identity. In the family circle God's covenantal
love was conveyed by means of storyte.lling.
Children have their own world and language which differ in many ways from the adult world.
Chapter 4 explores the personal world and language of children and gives an exposition of the
different developmental stages between the ages of six and twelve. Chapter 5 deals with the
world of children, the family and the immediate environment of growing children.
Healing in pastoral care is exercised through faith care. The research proposes the storytelling
method as a most effective vehicle to convey God's love to the child. Chapier six explains the
necessity for a storytelling technique through which the horizon of the child's environment
merges with the horizon of God's unfailing love and grace.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Grief pastorate often has the shortcoming where the ministry strategy focuses
more on short term involvement than a long term accompaniment. The
minister's involvement necessarily focuses on the crisis around the initial
shock phase.
The duration of the grief process is hardly predictable. The pastor must
therefore follow a long term approach. This long term approach must set
about in earnest with the interdependence of the grief process on the one
hand and on the other hand a growth process. Such an approach can be
characterised as a pastoral growth model where Clinebell's growth model is
used as the basis.
The aim of this pastoral growth model is the development of spirituality.
Spirituality is understood as the total human life in communion with God and
that includes the following aspects: Identity, intimacy, sinfulness, lordship,
mortality, holiness and commitment. Through the holistic character of
spirituality the mourner is addressed in totality- in his or her total humanness.
This eliminates the danger where the pastorate is guilty, on the one hand of
emphasis of the spiritual aspect, on the other hand the human aspect of man.
A pastoral growth model for the development of spirituality during grief is a
comprehensive, well-grounded pastoral model which could be made use of
successfully during grief pastorate.
groeiproses. So 'n benadering kan tipeer word as 'n pastorale groeimodel
waar Clinebell se groeimodel as basis gebruik word.
aangespreek- in sy of haar totale menswees.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis is to show the relevance of an application of hope care model
to the Korean couples who are in conflict and confusion by being caught in the battle
between Confucianism and post-modernity regarding marital values.
Korean marriages face difficulties due to the increasing intluence of post-modernity in
Korean culture. The disruption of the family is the most marked consequence of
post-modernity, in which an attitude and value system toward life, marriage and
especially self, is changing. Even though the increasing influence of post-modernity has
weakened the influence of Confucianism, Korean marriage is still influenced by the tenets
of Confucianism in terms of the role and status of men and women within four main areas:
1) education at home and at school, 2) sex discrimination at the workplace 3) military
service for men, 4) the revival of cultural heritages as part of the rise of nationalism in
response to globalization.
It is said that the church has to take initiative to prevent Korean marriages from
collapsing. However, the teaching around marriage in Korean churches seems to be
mingled with Confucian precepts. This raises doubt about the capacity of Korean
churches to contribute positively to the strengthening of marriage relationships.
Marriage counselling in Korean conservative churches is being practiced within the
framework of a reductionist view on biblical counselling. This is not sufficient in a
post-modern Korea by the reason that this approach has the danger of ascribing all
human problems to personal sins, thereby encouraging a one-sided God-concept in
which God is only concerned with sins and righteousness and has no compassion for
human beings in their suffering. When marriage is troubled, this God-image can lead the
couple to severe guilt feelings rather than to the hope which can improve their marriage
and enhance their mutual respect.
Hope care, based on appropriate God-images and a constructive self-image arising out
of God's faithfulness and our new being in Christ, could help couples to achieve a
constructive attitude to life, to various crises, to self and to their partners. Since hope
care model includes the sacramental concept of marriage, the concept of the grace
and love of God and the concept of 'mutual submission,' it could be expected to
adequately deal with the fundamental Confucian values (male's dominance, female's
submissiveness and hierarchy), thus contributing to the attainment of the three key
goals in the Korean marriage, such as equality, marital friendship and a closer marital
bond. As a result, hope could then ensure a more healthy stance in order to help couples
to grow in marriage relationships.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The need for this research arose from the phenomenon of Wangtta which has recently
become a widespread form of anti-social behavior. It causes tremendous stress to
Korean children, especially affecting primary school children who are emotionally
very vulnerable and who still are in the process of forming their self-image and
worldview.
The dissertation is an attempt to investigate the social and cultural phenomenon of
Wangtta in order to provide some help to parents, teachers and pastoral care takers
concerned with meeting the needs of children who are victims of Wangtta.
Wangtta is an extreme form of violent peer pressure which includes physical and
verbal assaults. It takes the form of peer group tyranny. Individuals vent their anger,
frustration, and feeling of defeatedness on victims among their own peers. Their aim
is total excommunication of an individual from the group. In this way they achieve a
distorted sense of superiority. Wangtta seems to be the outcome of confused identity
and devastated spirituality resulting from the impact of clash between conflicting
cultures, worldviews and spirituality. The phenomenon of Wangtta should there be
assessed against the background of Shananism, Confusionism and Buddhism. Thus
the reason for cultural and systemic approach. Empirical research, using
questionnaires, showed the self-image of Korean children to be extremely weak and
fragile due to existing cultural processes of change and transformation. The basic
hypothesis is that in terms of a theological anthropology, self-images and God-images
are interrelated to each other and to such a degree that they greatly affect the person's
ability to cope with severe crises in life.
In order to help children to establish a healthy self-image, pastoral care should focus
on the refraiming of God-images. The establishment of appropriate God-images will
not only promote more constructive and purposeful coping mechanisms by children,
but will also change their attitude to life. The God-images of children have to be
represented, redirected and reframed according to a worldview determined by
Christian spirituality. The outcome of this dissertation is that pastoral care to the phenomenon of Wangtta
implies a God-image determined by a theopaschitic stance in pastoral theology: l.e.
the notion of a suffering God.
The dissertation opts for the notion: God as a Soul Friend and a Partner for life.
Pastoral care to the phenomenon of Wangtta therefore implies a God-image which can
foster hope and grant forgiveness.
The dissertation stresses the importance of the cross-cultural and spiritual dimension
of pastoral care within the postrnodem culture of the Korean society.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This proposal focuses on the quest for appropriate God-images which can be
used to represent God in a given pastoral situation within an African context. It
identifies the challenge that confronts the African people as they try to find what
can be accepted within the African culture to express their experience of God.
The study argues that pastoral care and cross-cultural communication are faced
with a twofold problem: the problem of accommodation (continuity) and rejection
(discontinuity). It has been observed that the problem of accommodation and
rejection is an integral feature of a theological problem of continuity and
discontinuity in cross-cultural communication. The problem of accommodation
and rejection has been described in this study as: the challenge African people
confront in trying to express their experience of God in a given pastoral
situation, while at the same time being aware of what is not acceptable and
appropriate to the content of the Christian faith.
The basic working assumption undertaken by this research, states that
appropriate God-images are those which represent God and create an
experience of meaning and significance in any kind of circumstance faced by
His people. We will presuppose further that appropriate God-images are those
which are not going to conflict with a theological interpretation of the Godhuman
encounter in a given pastoral care situation. In order to clarify these
basic assumptions, the study has undertaken to work with a Hermeneutical
model. A hermeneutical model will help us to identify the underlying factors of
an African cosmology and anthropology which, according to this study,
influences the way African people formulate their God-images. It will be argued
further that unless we understand what influences the way African people
formulate God-images, we will not comprehend the depth of the problem of
accommodation and rejection in an African context. The research proposal wishes to emphasize that the African quest for
appropriate God-images is a pastoral problem. Pastoral ministry has a
challenge of providing a pastoral diagnosis of God-images which people can
identify with. Pastoral ministry should make use of metaphors and symbols
common to African people in order to facilitate their quest for appropriate Godimages.

▼ ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Humankind has made great progress over the centuries in gaining an understanding of how the human body works. This has all been in an attempt to bring about health and healing where there appeared to be an unbalance in the body's normal functions. The mind also later became an object of study to
address its relation to humankinds physical health. Later, social dimensions of health were also
identified and were attended to. Yet, much disease and ailments seem to still plague our societies and
communities.
Theology in the name of pastoral care had been faithfully adding the spiritual dimension to healing.
But it was only in the recent wake within practical theology that the theological sciences had entered
into meaning conversations with other disciplines. These developments within practical theology
raised a lot of question both inside and outside of the theological discipline. At the same time, this new
fibrant branch of theology built bridges with the medical sciences, social and behavioural SCiences,
management sciences, just to name a few.
This study highlights the developments specifically around the scientific nature of theology and the
conversation it had over the decades with medical science. It becomes clear that this dialogue is
necessary as both theology and medicine have a common interest. They both complement each others
dimensions and they address humankind in their state of pain and suffering.
By covering the historical development of theology and medicine, proving their credibility as scientific
disciplines, and pointing to their struggle with the dualistic concept, this study proposes to the Church
and its healing ministry to restore wholistic healing in collaboration with the goverment services and
local community structures.
