▼ While the cumulative history of the early church paints a trajectory towards a strict form of vertical, hierarchical leadership, at least five patterns of shared leadership emerge throughout the Apostolic Fathers that make the case for the presence of a form, proto or otherwise, of shared leadership in the early church. In light of the literature base, the study presents shared leadership in terms of nine seminal aspects. ▼ The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to examine the relationship between the conflict management styles among senior pastors and the perceived organizational servant leadership tendencies in their churches. This study should help senior pastors to understand how their conflict management styles and servant leadership behaviors may relate to the organizational servant leadership tendencies in their churches so that they may improve the congregational health and effectiveness of their churches.
This research presented
theological foundation about servant leadership by extracting biblical principles from two Old Testament and six New Testament passages: 1 Samuel 15:22, Micah 6:8, Matthew 5:1-12, 20:20-28, Mark 9:33-37, John 12:20-26, 13:1-35, and Philippians 2:1-11. It was followed by a detailed discussion on the theoretical foundation of servant leadership and the Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA) instrument (Laub 1999) for measuring organizational servant leadership tendency. A
theological foundation of conflict management and a discussion on the Rahim Organizational Conflict Instrument II (ROCI-II) (Rahim 2001) for measuring the level of the five interpersonal conflict management styles (integrating, obliging, dominating, avoiding, and compromising) were also provided.
The research instrument was a Web-based composite survey that consisted of (1) a 9-item demographic questionnaire, (2) the 28-item ROCI-II Form-C, and (3) the 66-item OLA. The research population was limited to the senior pastors of the 44,848 member churches of the 1,182 associations in the
Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). With this population, a minimum response rate of 381 surveys was needed for this study to achieving a 95% confidence level with a confidence interval of ±5%. Cluster sampling on the 1,182 SBC associations was used to obtain a smaller but sufficient sample frame of 2,562 churches. A total of 406 usable responses were collected and analyzed.
Pearson r was used to analyze the collected data in order to answer the research questions. It was found that (1) there existed a statistically significant, positive, and weak correlation between the level of organizational servant leadership tendency of a church and the integrating style (r = 0.314, p = 0.000); (2) there was no statistically significant correlation between the organizational servant leadership tendency of a church and the obliging style (r = 0.064, p = 0.202); (3) there existed a statistically significant, positive, and very weak correlation between the organizational servant leadership tendency of a church and the compromising style (r = 0.106, p = 0.033); (4) there was no statistically significant correlation between the organizational servant leadership tendency of a church and the dominating style (r = -0.052, p = 0.292); and (5) there existed a statistically significant, inverse, and weak correlation between the organizational servant leadership tendency of a church and the avoiding style (r = -0.200, p = 0.000).

▼ Listening is a critical skill for those who lead. Research indicates that leaders significantly influence followers through their listening practices; however the relationship between leadership styles and listening is assumed but not conclusively proven (Kouzes and Posner 2002). The purpose of this current study was to determine if a relationship exists between leadership style and listening practices of International Mission Board (IMB) overseas team leaders (Burns 1978, Bass 2004).
The population for this research was overseas team leaders of the IMB serving in this position for more than six months with a team of four or more team members. A total of 145 of 391 team leaders participated in this study with a response rate of 37%. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) was used to measure transformational, transactional, and passive/avoidant leadership style and the Listening Practices Feedback Report-360 (LPFR) assessed listening practices of attention, empathy, memory, open mind, respect, and response.
A correlational analysis using Pearson r was conducted between leadership styles and listening practices. Further analysis was conducted to determine which leadership style was most significantly correlated with each of the six listening practice subscales. The subscale of open mind was not significantly correlated with any leadership style.
The findings indicated that transformational leadership had a statistically significant and moderately positive correlation with the total LPFR score and on five of the six listening practices subscales. Transactional leaders also had a moderately positive correlation with total LPFR score and significant correlations on empathy, memory, and response subscales. Passive/avoidant leadership style had a significantly moderate negative correlation with LPFR and with empathy, memory, respect, and response subscales. Transformational leadership scored highest on the LPFR total listening score. Passive/avoidant leaders' showed the lowest total listening scores and were rated ineffective listeners. This study shows that transformational and transactional leadership styles have a statistically significant and moderately positive relationship with listening dimension scores as measured by the LPFR and supports transformational leadership theory.

▼ This dissertation analyzed the leadership development process among four North American house church networks. The study involved leader/trainers and house church leaders within all four networks. The intent of this study was is to reveal the competencies used by leader/trainers to select, develop, and sustain house church leaders. Accompanying the research findings a possible grounded theory of leadership development could emerge from the resultant analysis. This may occur because these four house church networks, though similar in house church philosophy, will also have attributes that differentiate themselves from the other networks
The research design for this study was a multiple case study. This qualitative research design was achieved by engaging in on-site interviews with leader/trainers and house church leaders among the four selected house church networks. The researcher traveled to the location of each house church network and spent a minimum of two days. This aided in providing a thick description of each network'
s geographical and cultural setting. There was one quantitative component involved in the research which employed Likert scales to measure objectively the self-perception of house church leaders toward the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of their leadership development.
The findings sought to relay practices of leadership development that are utilized by leader/trainers within the context of selected North American house churches. The findings could reveal a grounded theory or philosophy of leadership development that informs the practices of each network'
s leadership development process. The goal, therefore, was to expose ministry leaders, existing house church leaders, and potential house church planters of practices and philosophy of network leadership development that may be generalized to their own ministry context.

▼ The current study sought to examine the marriage mentoring model as a method to restore marriages among Christian believers. This thesis first assessed the dissolution of marriages through divorce in order to understand its causes, and included a study of the Christian Scriptures regarding divorce and the topic of marriage. In addition, current literature was reviewed in an attempt to better comprehend how mentoring worked and how it may be utilized as a divorce prevention method among troubled marriages. Interviews were then conducted with Christian couples who had experienced marital distress but were reconciled. The responses were then analyzed.
The study was unique in that it examined Christian couples in established marriages that were in marital distress when they started the mentoring process. Thirteen couples participated in the study. The couples lived in various states across the country: Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Nebraska, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Christian couples were sought through churches and Christian counseling centers in the continental United States that have a marriage mentoring ministry and also through the recommendation of select
seminary professors, church practitioners, or online marriage mentoring websites.
Past studies on marriage mentoring have shown that mentoring resulted in an increase in communication and a decrease in marital conflict among pre-marital or newly married couples. The results of the current study indicated that marriage mentoring was also beneficial to Christian couples who had been married for several years and were on the verge of divorce. This study has shown that no matter the severity of the marital distress, marriages can be repaired and can flourish with marriage mentoring.

▼ The purpose of this content analysis research was to develop a biblical-
theological model of Cognitive Dissonance Theory applicable to pedagogy. Evidence of cognitive dissonance found in Scripture was used to infer a purpose for the innate drive toward consonance. This inferred purpose was incorporated into a model that improves the descriptive fidelity of previous research observations and extends the prescriptive facility of Cognitive Dissonance Theory.
The qualitative research design consisted of five phases. In the first phase, individual cases were identified by examining every verb in the New American Standard Bible for potential evidence of cognitive dissonance. In the second phase, the primary researcher examined every case isolated in Phase One for the elements of cognitive dissonance using criteria from the cognitive dissonance research literature. In the third phase, outside coders repeated coding of a stratified, random sample of cases, and intercoder reliability was established. In the fourth phase, the results were analyzed and evaluated. In the final phase, a biblical-
theological model was proposed.
There was an apparent progression in the type of cognitive tension experienced by people in Scripture. In the Old Testament, most cases of cognitive tension included a commitment to a decision consistent with Leon Festinger'
s description of cognitive dissonance. In the New Testament, particularly after Pentecost, the cognitive tension seems to have changed so that Christ-followers no longer demonstrated a commitment to a decision before experiencing cognitive tension. This change revealed cognitive tension consistent with both Piaget and Hegel. Alternatives were offered to explain the apparent progression in cognitive tension and a model was proposed that described Cognitive Dissonance Theory as a metatheory of cognitive tension that allows for subtypes of tension recognized by other researchers.
Cognitive tension in Scripture seemed to be related to a sapiential drive manifested as learning aimed at orthodoxy – rightly aligned propositional wisdom, orthopathy – rightly aligned dispositional wisdom, and orthopraxy – rightly aligned enacted wisdom. The implications and applications of these conclusions were discussed.

In chapter 1, the reader will come to understand that there are no comprehensive works dealing with the discipline of shared leadership by Paul. However, when one comes to accept the presence of shared leadership through the Scriptures, there is an expectation that one will practice the discipline (Jas 1:22-25).
Chapter 2 explores the literature base to gain an appreciation for what scholarship has offered as it relates to shared leadership. It can be argued that lack of literature to discuss shared leadership is ultimately the result of a vernacular disconnect. Nevertheless, it is incumbent upon this study to discriminate and establish a working definition for the discipline of shared leadership and to explore Paul'
s view of the church
Perhaps the greatest metaphor used by Paul to describe the church is his reference to the church being the representation of the body of Christ. Chapter 3 examines Paul'
s view of leadership in the church, beginning with a functional understanding of Paul'
s ecclesiology. In addition, Paul'
s view of spiritual giftedness in the life of a believer will be examined, as one'
s giftedness is critically important to understanding Paul'
s view of shared leadership.
Chapter 4 examines Paul'
s philosophy and practice of shared leadership by looking at six principles throughout the Pauline corpus: (1) functioning within one'
s giftedness, (2) deference, (3) Paul'
s team based ministry approach, (4) Paul'
s vernacular, (5) Paul'
s partnerships, and (6) Paul'
s instructions to church leaders.
Chapter 5 begins by exploring the benefits of shared leadership. Five benefits are considered: shared responsibility, accountability, unity, collaboration, and shared vision. It is contended that these benefits have a direct result on an organization'
s competence and effectiveness. In addition, chapter 5 explores best practices of shared leadership, contributions to the precedent literature, and relevant prospects for future study.

▼ In the last decade, the theory of shared leadership has received considerable attention. This theory shifts the primary focal point of leadership discussions from vertical to lateral forms of influence. Moreover, it has been recognized that the shared leadership environment requires a unique understanding of identity. Working in teams that allow for lateral forms of influence requires that members have both a bounded and open understanding of identity.
This research examines the association between trinitarian thinking and the understanding of personal identity in the context of positions of lateral influence. In particular the doctrines of the image of God, union with Christ, and covenant are examined from a trinitarian perspective. Because the doctrine of Trinity emphasizes that the one God eternally exists as three persons, trinitarian thinking requires that both universals and particulars be held together in an equiprimal relationship. Each of these doctrines is examined in order to highlight the significance of this equiprimal relationship in understanding personal identity.
In the concluding chapters of this research, a model of leadership is proposed that values both the bounded and open aspects of personal identity. This model encourages the development of ethical lateral influence through love, dialogue, and a covenantal understanding of authority. These three aspects of ethical lateral influence are then applied to the workgroup setting through the development of a particular organizational culture. In order for a culture that values love, dialogue, and covenantal relationships to develop, organizations must build observable patterns of teamwork, diversification, and coaching.

▼ Those in pastoral ministry are inundated with countless leadership theories, tips, and tricks all competing for their attention and allegiance. Is there a timeless model for pastoral leadership that is uniquely and distinctively Christian? More than that, how can pastoral ministry reflect and be an extension of the ministry of the Chief Shepherd, Jesus Christ? One finds such a model in the threefold ministry of Jesus (the munus triplex Christi), a model that is epistemologically, theologically, biblically, and practically grounded in his person and work. Just as in the ministry of Jesus toward his body, God intends for prophetic, priestly, and kingly service to resound throughout the local church and its leadership.

Southern Baptist pastors in the first ten years after graduating with the Master of Divinity degree from accredited seminaries. The research was limited to lead pastors of
Southern Baptist churches and sought to identify any relationship in pastoral leadership effectiveness during the first ten years after
seminary training between pastors with pastoral experience prior to or concurrent with
seminary training and pastors with no prior or concurrent pastoral leadership experience during
seminary training. Only
Southern Baptist pastors graduating with a Master of Divinity from Association of
Theological Schools accrediting seminaries with less than ten years post graduation pastoral experience were included in the sample population. The Lewis Pastoral Leadership Instrument assessment was utilized to ascertain pastoral leadership effectiveness. The inventory evaluated a pastor’
s leadership effectiveness in three key areas: character, competency, and contribution. The inventory was developed by the Lewis Center for Church Leadership at Wesley
Seminary, Washington, DC.

Many faith-based academic institutions began to deteriorate in the twentieth century as the institutions wandered toward a secular educational platform. Because of this transition, there is a renewed call for faith-based institutions to move beyond an environment of piety by creating a climate of faith and learning as the foundational synergistic roots in preparing graduates to embrace the cause of Christ.
To address this concern, a sequential transformative mixed methods study was implemented to describe the factors, as expressed by presidents of Christian institutions, which predict the missional success of
Southern Baptist Convention liberal arts educational institutions. In addition, this study argued that presidents of Christian institutions can clearly describe the factors of missional success of Christian institutions and a self- assessment model of institutional success can be established from the learned factors.
In stage 1 of the study, 24 presidents of CCCU institutions, but not leaders of SBC schools, agreed to provide factors through an e-Delphi approach that predicted the success of Christ-centered institutions. Ninety factors were gathered during the initial phase of the study. With the completion of two additional rounds of surveys with the same presidents, a group of 56 factors were found important or very important in achieving the success of a Christ-centered institution. These factors were then examined through a
factor analysis statistical process that established 6 clusters. In the second stage of the study, presidents of SBC institutions ranked the factors in each cluster.
The results revealed that the most important cluster that included 5 factors addressed the importance of right Christian persons and explained 66 percent of model. The second cluster contained 19 factors about operational principles of the institution. Both of these clusters explained nearly 80 percent of the model of success.
Results illustrated that presidents can express the factors that predict the success of Christ-centered higher educational institutions. The significance of these findings is the opportunity to examine the historical cases where Christian institutions wandered from their Christian faith and to look forward in using this model in promoting the success of a Christian higher educational institution.

▼ The need for revitalization in the modern American church is well documented. In the
Southern Baptist Convention alone, 1,000 churches close their doors every year. Despite an increase in the overall number of churches in the SBC due to church planting, attendance and membership numbers continue to fall. The number of total baptisms is declining at an even greater pace than attendance and membership. These numbers suggest that church revitalization situations are not the exception in the United States; rather, they are the norm.
This reality has led to a steady increase in church revitalization writing since the term was first used in a ministry context in 1976. However, much of the literature remains anecdotal and based on case studies. Furthermore, most revitalization literature is focused on methodologies or factors that lead to church revitalization. These studies consistently show that pastoral leadership is one of, if not the most important factor that leads to church revitalization.
While some studies have looked at personality characteristics or leadership styles of church revitalizers, no study to date has generated a complete competency model for church revitalization. The purpose of this study was to create a competency model for church revitalization based on the knowledge, skills, and characteristics found in successful practitioners. This study used an exploratory sequential mixed method design consisting of both a set of qualitative interviews with successful church revitalizers as well as an empirical analysis of a Delphi panel of revitalization experts.
The interview portion of the study found organizational awareness, team leadership, initiative, missional focus, gospel orientation, and a willingness to confront and exercise church discipline as frequent competencies demonstrated in critical incidents of church revitalization. The Delphic portion of the study yielded 129 distinct competencies that were rated for importance by a panel of experts.

▼ There is a sad and consistent narrative that permeates the story of so many pastors. After dedicating their lives to advance the gospel and to serve the Bride of Christ, His church, so often the story ends in the tragedy of burnout and its debilitating effects and far reaching impacts on family, congregation, and community. Yet, there is a small group of resilient and enduring pastors who have somehow learned to grow from the difficulties and stress of ministry. How are they able to avert the negative and often detrimental effects of ministerial stress to experience such success and longevity in ministry? What are their stories? How do they perceive their roles and the stress of those roles? How have they learned to not only survive, but somehow, thrive? This study seeks to give a voice to their stories and to understand their self-perceptions.
Several researchers have concluded that the occupation of pastor is especially prone to burnout. These same researchers cite varying contributors to this condition, such as time demands, unrealistic expectations, isolation, and loneliness. Even though debate exists surrounding the specific contributing factors and the level of their contribution, the results are clear in the research. Pastors’ lives become imbalanced and their spiritual growth stagnates. However, some pastors have demonstrated growth and longevity in a constant ministry context. Hence, they have seemingly developed and matured through the difficult experiences and occupational stressors that have left many of their colleagues defeated. This study sought to discover why some pastors are able not only to overcome these adverse and detrimental factors of stress and burnout, but also achieve both personal and professional growth in spite of them.
This phenomenological qualitative study describes the experiences of twenty pastors who have experienced the phenomenon of growth and longevity in ministry despite occupational and personal stressors, and identifies commonalities of their perceptions of how they have dealt with stress and achieve success over an extended period of time in a constant ministry context. The pastors have ministered at one church for at least fifteen years. Each church has exhibited measurable growth under the leadership of each respective pastor during their tenure.
The results of this study identified four common themes: Source of stressors, how these pastors identify and deal with their occupational stress, the impacts of stress on their personal lives, and their advice for young pastors from what they have learned over their long tenures in ministry. A common pattern among these veteran pastors is that over time they gained a new perspective and became more effective at coping with stress. They modified and adapted their behaviors, adopting several practices that are recommended in the broader literature on stress and burnout and the specific literature on religious clergy. Over the last fifteen years denominational decline coinciding with megachurches led by iconic pastoral personalities has changed the playing field of pastoral transition. The current pastoral succession conversation has addressed the pastor’
s responsibility in succession and provided snapshots of functional transitional plans. The question that now needs addressed is, “What does it take to be a transitional leader?” or “What is the leadership profile of a successful transitional pastor?”
While the current literature contains hints at what the traits of a successful transitioning leader should be, these characteristics have yet to be statistically identified. Once systematically studied these traits would allow an individual to measure and improve areas of perceived growth.
The purpose of this qualitative analysis of the characteristics of successfully transitioning pastors is to statistically identify the traits of a successful transitional pastor to prepare pastors to become transitional leaders. To accomplish this a qualitative study was prepared. Chapter 1 provides the need for the study—pointing to a void in the literature surrounding pastoral transition, specifically the identification of characteristics of successfully transitioning pastors. Chapter 2 reviews the current literature and distills 27 characteristics identified in pastoral, secular, and academic writings. Chapter 3 outlines the research design, which utilizes a Delphi study engaging an expert panel. Chapter 4 provides analysis of the Delphi panel results including a successful transitional pastoral profile and a transitional pastor competency model. Chapter 5 offers research applications noting the statistical prominence given to followership and confusion surrounding disciple-making, the statistical importance of the characteristics of willingness to let go of authority, concern for the church, and emotional maturity, as well as statistical implications for the use of a successful transitional profile and competency model for self-assessment, church leadership, and academic training.

s apparent “success” and effectiveness in fulfilling the Great Commission, there are looming variables related to leadership structures and organizational complexities that have not been adequately addressed. Perhaps the most significant question in need of further research in the multisite field is simply determining where final decision-making authority is found. Does such authority lie at the campus level, or at the larger church level? For example, what decisions can and cannot a campus pastor make apart from the approval of the senior leadership team?
The longevity of the multisite movement will ultimately be determined by the presence of healthy leadership structures that learn the tedious balance between control and freedom. The senior leadership team has the arduous task of being closely enough involved in the operations of each campus to ensure that campuses rightly embody the DNA of the overall church. Yet at the same time, this senior leadership team must empower and legitimize campus leadership in such a way that they do not feel unnecessarily restricted and compromised of their unique calling and giftedness. Such perceptions on behalf of campus leadership can lead to mistrust, conflict, and the ultimate deterrence of the mission of the church.
This quantitative study addresses the leadership dynamics and organizational complexities in multisite churches, with a particular emphasis on the relationship between campus pastors and the church’
s senior leadership team. Chapter 1 introduces the research problem and its practical significance. It also defines the research questions while indicating the study’
s limitations. The examination of the precedent literature in chapter 2 underscores the biblical and
theological foundations of this topic, such as the clear examples of shared leadership structures seen in the New Testament. Additionally, this chapter details the contemporary research regarding multisite structures in general, and leadership structures in particular. Chapter 3 presents the research design, defines the population, establishes the selection criteria, and outlines the instrumentation. Chapter 4 analyzes the findings, while chapter 5 presents the researcher’
s conclusions. The study’
s ultimate aim is to stimulate meaningful dialogue among multisite churches, and to strengthen multisite churches’ leadership structures so as to better ensure biblical fidelity, health, unity, and longevity.

In light of the biblical roots of shared leadership it is difficult to understand the
lack of research related to the practice of shared leadership by Christian business leaders
in the marketplace. Although research of shared leadership has been robust since its
emergence in the last quarter-century, little or no research of shared leadership by
Christian leaders existed before this study. Designed as a qualitative multiple case study,
this thesis explores the practice of shared leadership in three cases for the express purpose
of discovering best practices for shared leadership in the marketplace by Christian
leaders. Although the enterprises studied are not necessarily described as Christian
companies, all clearly understand their existence as a tool for living out the Gospel in the
world.
I isolated ten established best practices of shared leadership through the
literature review. Through case observation, personal interviews, and document
collection, the established best practices were validated for each site. Additionally, five
unique best practices for shared leadership by Christian marketplace leaders were
identified. Christian marketplace leaders who practice shared leadership:
1. Seek to enrich the lives of all stakeholders as a primary purpose of the enterprise by
providing good paying jobs for employees, exceptional service to customers, and a
fair profit for owners and stockholders.
2. Encourage stakeholders to embrace biblical discipleship practices in leadership by
honoring God in their work and by treating others as they wish to be treated.
3. Seek to support corporate as well as biblical values by articulating a biblical view of
work.
4. Leverage the value of people for the common good of employees, customers, and
other stakeholders.
5. Expect stakeholders to embrace and live out biblical virtues.

leadership as it emerged from antecedent forms of leadership. Chapter 3 presents the
research design, defines the population, establishes the selection criteria, and outlines the
instrumentation. Chapter 4 analyzes the findings, while chapter 5 presents my
conclusions. The study'
s ultimate aim is to enrich the literature base by acknowledging
the biblical foundations of shared leadership and the natural inclination of Christian
business leaders to practice shared leadership as a result of their Christian faith.

The current study was designed to identify embedded best practices for leading organizational change in the local church ministering in an urban context. The study also sought to determine whether it was possible for the leadership in the local church to lead their congregations through successful organizational change and meaningful culture engagement without forsaking biblical and
theological orthodoxy.
The study validates the majority of best practices identified through the literature review and it also encountered distinctive best practices common to all three participating sites that are unique to the ministry contexts of the local church. These five distinctive best practices are: allowing doctrine and theology to inform practice, discipleship, preaching, adaptation and flexibility, and internal cultural change through transformational leadership.
Chapter 1 introduces the research problem and the purpose of the research study. Chapter 2 reviews extensively the precedent literature on the subject of organizational change. This chapter emphasizes the church’
s role as an organizational system and provides essential information on the area of leadership. It also focuses on John Kotter’
s 8-Stage Process for leading organizational change and The Transformational Journey Method proposed by Jim Harrington, Mike Bonem, and James H. Furr. Chapter 3 provides a detailed explanation of the research methodology of the entire research study while describing the roles of the case study and content analysis approaches. Chapter 4 provides a profound and detailed analysis of the findings, and chapter 5 offers some concluding thoughts regarding the study’
