▼ Due to the popularity of electronically controlled loads and the widespread use of alternative energy sources such as wind turbines and solar cells, the power quality at the distribution level must be carefully monitored. One of the many different means to monitor power quality is through frequency measurements. Nonlinearities cause harmonic generation effectively distorting the signals seen at the load, and so this seemingly simple task becomes a challenge. Recent advances in digital computing have allowed powerful linear estimators like the Kalman filter (KF) to be widely implemented for frequency estimation. In real physical applications, systems exhibit nonlinear behavior raising the need to adapt the Kalman Filter to fit nonlinear models. The Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) deals with nonlinearities in the system by linearizing the model around a known
state. However, this makes the estimation process inaccurate because second order or higher nonlinearities are neglected.
The recently developed Unscented Kalman filter (UKF) takes advantage of the Unscented Transformation (UT) to deal with nonlinear models without the need of linearization and with the same computational complexity as the EKF. However, any variations of the Kalman filter exhibit a very similar robustness problem when modeling uncertainty and are also sensitive to initial conditions. In order to overcome these limitations, an improved UKF algorithm based on the theory of strong tracking filters (STF) has been developed. If tuned properly, this new algorithm improves tracking for sudden changes and avoids divergence. However, if the process and/or measurement noise change with time, the filter will not estimate with the same accuracy it was tuned for. This thesis work proposes an adaptive algorithm based on an Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF), in order to improve the frequency estimation of power signals which undergo changes and are corrupted by white noise. The adaptive algorithm is based on a Master-Slave configuration, where the "master" estimates the
state and the "slave", which operates in parallel, estimates the noise covariance matrix. Since the voltage signal is less distorted than the current signal, the former is employed to derive a complex
state-space model to estimate the fundamental frequency. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, several simulations with synthetic data are implemented.

state information (CSI) is essential for data detection. Fast fading coefficients estimation is important in order to acquire accurate CSI. Kalman filters (KF) are widely used for real time parameter estimation and can be used to estimate the fast fading coefficients of a mobile communication channel. Previous attempts at applying the KF to estimate fast fading coefficients of a massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) channel assume that the channel autocorrelation is constant or varies weakly. Due to the fact that the carrier frequency of 5G massive MIMO systems reach tens of giga hertz, the channel autocorrelation could vary more acutely. The large number of antennas used in massive MIMO also increases the size of channel coefficients matrix. Therefore, some previous approaches based on nonlinear KF lead to high computational complexity. In order to improve system robustness of a nonlinear time varying channel and ease the computational demand, a combined channel coefficient and autocorrelation estimator based on the KF is presented in this thesis. With the substantially improved receiver channel diversity provided by the massive MIMO system, a fairly accurate channel autocorrelation estimate can be achieved with linear estimator. Compared to previous non-linear estimators, the proposed method is more practical because the computational complexity is reduced substantially. It is shown through simulation that our combined channel coefficients and autocorrelation estimator can improve the mean square error (MSE) for all possible variations of channel autocorrelation.

▼ As the number of mobile devices accessing large-scale WLANs such as campus
and metropolitan area networks increases, the need for load balancing among the
cells becomes crucial. In addition, the network must also support some minimum
handoff tolerance defined by an application.
A number of load balancing techniques have been proposed in the literature that
focuses on formulating new load metrics rather than using Received Signal
Strength Indicator (RSSI) as the association metric. These schemes consider a
variety of factors such as number of STAs, enhanced RSSI, channel utilization,
queue length, bandwidth, and throughput to achieve balanced load. However,
some of these techniques require protocol modifications to both APs and STAs or
need special agents such as admission control server, extra software, and
switches. Others do not consider Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of
applications, which vary from one application to another, and thus do not satisfy
users requiring minimized handoff latency and real-time services. Moreover, most
techniques ignored the hidden node problem, which causes packet collisions and
thus the presence of such nodes can severely affect the performance of WLANs.
This dissertation proposes a new metric that provides load balance as well as
timely handoffs for WLANs by taking into account both direct and hidden node
collisions as well as the types of traffics in order to support QoS. Another novel
feature of the proposed method is the use of probe requests during the discovery
phase to monitor the states of the channels to determine the best Access Point
(AP) for association. Our simulation results show that the proposed method is
significantly better than relying only on signal strength in term of utilization,
end-to-end delay, collision rate, and packet loss.

▼ In networked control systems (NCS) information or packets usually flow from a
sensor or a set of sensors to a remotely located controller. Then the controller
processes the received information and sends a series of control commands to the
actuators through a communication network which could be either wireless or
wired. For any type of communication network, time delays are an inherent
problem and depending on the conditions of the network they can be constant,
variable or even of random nature. Time-delays occurring from sensor to
controller and from controller to actuators may cause important system
performance degradation or even instability. This work proposes a novel strategy
of using the predictive capabilities of artificial neural networks (NN), particularly
the application of an adaptive NN, to minimize the effects of time delays in the
feedback control loop of NCS. We adopt an adaptive time delay neural network
(TDNN) to predict future time-delays based on a given history of delays that are
particularly present on the network where the corresponding system belongs to.
The adaptive nature of a TDNN allows the prediction of unexpected variations of
time-delays which might not be present in the training set of a known history of
delays. This is an important characteristic for real time applications. Using
predicted time delays, different methodologies can be used to alleviate effects of
such delays on NCS. Our focus here is on the development of an observer-based
variable sampling period model, and this dissertation describes how this method
can be used as an effective solution for this problem. Generally speaking, the
predicted time-delay values are used for the discretization of a continuous-time
linear time invariant system model transforming it into a discrete-time linear
time variant system model. In this dissertation, the practical phenomenon of packet
dropout is also addressed.

▼ A mathematical model of Limiting Dilution Analysis for two limiting
parameters is presented and investigated. Limiting Dilution Analysis is a microbiological
cell assay developed for immunological application. In the given
case we deal with the interaction between B lymphocytes, macrophage derived
factor and T-independent antigens. The
state of the art is that quantitative
statements are only possible if one cell type (in general the B cells) is limiting
and all others are in excess present.
The basis for this thesis is a set of experiments in which B cells and
macrophage derived factor are limiting and all other involved cells and factors
are in saturating amounts present. It is shown that so far presented suggestions
on modeling Limiting Dilution Analysis for two limiting cell-types are not
suitable for this problem. Further, a mathematical model based on data is
presented and interpreted in immunological terms with the help of a set of
partial differential equations. The basis for the interpretation of the model
are changes in affinity and saturation effects, both not incorporated in the so
far presented models of the assay. In particular the relevance of mathematical
interpretation of this process for the identification of new concepts as the
saturation effects is stressed.
The model of partial differential equations is highly non-linear but offers
the possibility of interpreting the highly interrelated processes apart from each
other.

▼ A new decentralized nonlinear controller for Robot Manipulators is
presented in this thesis. Based on concepts of Lyapunov stability theory and
some control ideas proposed in [3]-[7], we obtain continuous nonlinear
decentralized control laws which guarantee position and velocity tracking to
within an arbitrarily small error.
Assumptions based on physical constraints of manipulators are made to
guarantee the existence of the controller and asymptotic stability of the closed
loop system. Simulations show how well this rather simple control scheme works
on two of the links of the Puma 560 Manipulator.
The main contribution of this thesis is that it extends the results of a
class of complex centralized control algorithms to the decentralized robust
control of interconnected nonlinear subsystems like robot manipulators.

▼ A new algorithm is proposed which provides a sub-optimum near-far resistant
pattern for correlation with a known signal in a spread-spectrum multiple access
environment with additive white gaussian noise (AWGN). Only the patterns and
respective delays of the K-1 interfering users are required. The technique does not
require the inversion of a cross-correlation matrix. The technique can be easily
extended to as many users as desired using a simple recursion equation. The
computational complexity is O(K²) for each user to be decoded. It is shown that this
method provides the same results as the "one-shot" method proposed by Verdu and
Lupas.
Also shown is a new array architecture for implementing this new solution
using delta-sigma modulation and a correlator for non-binary patterns that takes
advantage of the digitized Al: signals. Simulation results are presented which show
the algorithm and correlator to be implementable in VLSI technology. This
approach allows processing of the received signal in real-time with a delay of O(.K)
bit periods per user. A modification of the algorithm is examined which allows
further reduction of complexity at the expense of reduced performance.

▼ Turbo codes have been used successfully for error correction in digital
communications, however, their application to wireless mobile
communications is still a fresh research topic. The objective of this thesis is
to present a new solution that involves the usage of turbo codes, spatial
diversity, and orthogonal complementary codes in a CDMA spread
spectrum system in order to deliver good performance in a fading
environment at low signal-to-noise ratios.
The results of the research that was performed to write this thesis
are presented in a modular and progressive fashion. That is, the design of a
basic turbo-coded system in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) is
developed first in order to get a good understanding of its potential in a
wireless communication environment. Then the basic system design is
expanded to include fading channel characteristics and multiple access
spread spectrum capabilities using classical code division multiple access
(CDMA) techniques. Finally, orthogonal complementary codes are used in

▼ This document investigates, justifies, designs, and simulates the application of
a fuzzy logic controller/optimizer in a sawmill bucking system application that is
the first production station where stems coming from the mountains are processed
in a sawmill.
One of the areas of success in the application of fuzzy logic is in control
systems. Fuzzy logic controllers are based on approximate reasoning of crisp
(physical) variables to provide a possible output. Fuzzy controllers' decisions, if
appropriate, try to simulate common sense decisions that a human will make after
evaluating a set of data. Fuzzy control systems are designed with the intention of
replacing an expert operator with a ruled-based system.
In this specific application the stems are sorted out in the sawmill yard as
stems for Mill "A", Mill "B" and Green End before they arrive at the bucking
station. Mill "A" is a dimensional sawmill, Mill "B" is a stud sawmill and Green
End is a Veneer mill. After the bark is removed from the tree, it passes through a
bucking station where there are a length, and a diameter measurement system to
provide an operator with some stem information so he/she can make a decision on
what blocks he/she should cut.
The operator bucking solutions are based on his/her and other operators past
experiences, the data provided by the length and diameter measurement systems
and his/her visual inspection on the shape (sweep & taper) of the stem. The
decisions of the operator are not exact but good enough or appropriate. His/her
decisions have a common goal that is to recover the most wood out of every tree.
This type of bucking system has been in practice for at least 50 years, and
therefore, there is a very well established set of rules applied by the operator to
obtain the most wood out of every tree.
The fuzzy logic controller simulations were designed with three fuzzy
controller engines, one engine for each mill. This was due to the computing time
and the simplicity of the design. Each one of the fuzzy controllers mentioned
above was simulated using Matlab with the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox, and Simulink
until the required design specifications were met.

▼ The widespread use of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) and the desire for such products from different vendors to operate together has generated a movement towards standardization. Over the last decade, several organizations worldwide have researched and developed such standards, this includes the IEEE 802.11 committee. One of the important considerations in design and marketing WLAN products is the data rate supported by such products. This thesis deals with the development of a modification of the Direct Sequence (DS) physical layer standard in IEEE 802.11 to allow higher data rates beyond the 1-2Mb/s supported by the standard. More precisely, this thesis proposes using Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and turbo coding, an aggressive channel encoding technique, to improve the data rate performance 2-3 times over that in IEEE
802.11. A simplified transceiver design is presented and computer simulations are performed to verify the design and implementation considerations.

▼ This dissertation presents the continued study of a
non-iterative decision feedback (DF) receiver/decoder
design and its application to cellular communications or
wireless local loop systems based on the IS-95(-A)
standard of the Telecommunications Industry Association
and also Personal Communications Services systems based on
the American National Standards Institute standard J-STD-
008-1996, which use code-division multiple access (CDMA)
spread spectrum technology. Specifically, the DF decoder
presented herein can be used in the uplink of these
systems, which simultaneously uses a concatenation of
convolutional coding, interleaving, and orthogonal Walsh
modulation.
The main contributions of this dissertation are the
demonstration that the DF concept works well in multipath
fading environments, the design of a new time-efficient
decoding algorithm, and a new interleaver design.
Initially, the performance of the DF decoder is
assessed in unfaded as well as Rayleigh fading multipath
propagation in additive white Gaussian noise interference.
Simulation results using coherent and noncoherent
detection are presented for both independent Rayleigh
fading and Rayleigh fading with a commonly used Doppler
spectrum. The results show improved performance compared
to conventional non-DF receivers using the same decoding
metric. This is a prerequisite for application of the DF
decoder in an actual mobile communications environment.
The effectiveness of the initial DF decoder design, as
it is applied to IS-95 based systems, is studied. It is
found that the effectiveness of the DF decoder is
determined by the decoding delay of the convolutional
decoder and the interleaver specification. Based on these
findings, two methodologies to improve the effectiveness
of the DF decoder are investigated. First, the average
decoding delay is reduced using sub-optimal convolutional
decoding. Second, the combination of a new block
interleaver design and the DF decoder is considered.
Simulation results of average decoding delay, bit error
rate and frame error rate are presented for coherent and
noncoherent detection of unfaded and Rayleigh fading
multipath signals. It is shown that both approaches result
in better system performance, which can further improve
the quality of service and/or capacity of an IS-95 based
system.
Finally, a simplified analysis of the DF decoder
performance is presented.

▼ An extremely important area that has enabled or will enable many of the
digital video services and applications such as VideoCD, DVD, DVC, HDTV, video
conferencing, and DSS is digital video compression. The great success of digital video
compression is mainly because of two factors. The
state of the art in very large scale
integrated circuit (VLSI) and a considerable body of knowledge accumulated over
the last several decades in applying video compression algorithms such as discrete
cosine transform (DCT), motion estimation (ME), motion compensation (MC) and
entropy coding techniques. The MPEG (Moving Pictures Expert Group) standard
reflects the second factor. In this thesis, MPEG standards are discussed thoroughly
and interpreted, and a VLSI chip implementation (CMOS 0.35μ technology and 3
layer metal) of a variable length decoder (VLD) for MPEG applications is developed.
The VLD developed here achieves high performance by using a parallel and pipeline
architecture. Furthermore, MPEG bitstream patterns are carefully analyzed in order
to drastically improve VLD memory efficiency. Finally, a special clock scheme is
applied to reduce the chip's power consumption.

▼ IS-95, an interim standard proposed for future digital personal communications
systems, uses two levels of encoding of digital data for error control and compatibility
with code-division multiple access (CDMA) transmission. The data is first
convolutionally encoded and the resulting symbols are interleaved and then groups are
encoded as orthogonal Walsh sequences. Decoding these two separate encodings is
traditionally done in separate sequential steps. By combining the decoding and applying
feedback of the final decision of the second level of decoding to the first level decoder
it is possible to reduce the error rate of the decoder.
Each Walsh sequence encodes six non-adjacent symbols of the convolutional code.
The receiver computes an estimate of the probability that each of the sixty-four possible
Walsh sequences has been sent, and uses this estimate as an estimate for each of the
convolution symbols which specified the Walsh sequence. Since the convolution symbols
are non-adjacent, it is likely that the actual value of some of the earlier symbols will have
been determined by the final decoder before later symbols specifying the same Walsh
sequence are used by the convolution decoder. The knowledge of the values of these
symbols can be used to adjust the probability estimates for that Walsh sequence,
improving the likelihood that future convolutional symbols will be correctly decoded.
Specific metrics for estimating probabilities that each convolutional symbol was
sent were tested with and without the proposed feedback, and error rates were estimated
based on extensive computer simulations. It was found that applying feedback does
improve error rates. Analytical methods were also applied to help explain the effects.

▼ Recent technical progress has made new forms of controller
implementations on computers possible. Especially the technique of Fuzzy Logic
Control has found a growing number of applications. Also the development of fast
A/D converters has made the acquisation of data with vision based systems
possible. In this project we combine the two techniques of Fuzzy Logic Control
and Vision Feedback to control an inverted pendulum and to determine their
usefulness and limitations.
The experiment was conducted and provided us with the data necessary to
judge the performance of the new control strategy.
The gathered data support the hypothesis that it is possible to control the
inverted pendulum with Fuzzy Logic Control using Vision Feedback, though not
without limitations.

▼ An adaptive decentralized nonlinear controller for a robot manipulator
is presented in this thesis. Based on the adaptive control schemes designed
by Seraji [18], Dai [30], and Jimenez [31], we redesigned and further
simplified the control algorithm and, as a consequence, we achieved better
path tracking performance.
The proposed adaptive controller is made of a PD feedback controller
which has time varying gains, a feedforward compensator based on the idea
of inverse dynamics, and an auxiliary signal. Due to its adaptive structure,
the controller shows robustness against disturbances and unmodeled
dynamics. In order to ensure asymptotic tracking we select a Lyapunov
function such that the controller forces the negative definiteness of the time
derivative of such a Lyapunov function. To do this, the tracking position and
velocity error are penalized and used as a part of the adaptive control gain.
The main advantages of this scheme are the comparably faster
convergence of tracking error, relatively simpler structure, and smoother
control activity. This controller only requires the position and angular speed
measurement, it does not require any knowledge about the mathematical
model of the robot manipulator. Simulation shows the capacity of this
controller and its robustness against disturbances.

▼ Long bridges tend to develop large deformations under the
action of intense dynamical loads such as wind or earthquakes.
Unless these deformations are controlled in some fashion, the
structure might suffer damage or even collapse. One possible
solution to this problem is to apply external forces to the
bridge through suspension cables.
This work presents an active robust control scheme to
suppress the vibrations caused by the vertical ground motion
due to an earthquake of a cable-stayed bridge. It is proven
both mathematically and through computer simulation that the
active nonlinear controller is capable of reducing the
amplitude of the vibrations to an arbitrarily small size. This
may save the bridge structure during a strong earthquake. It
is shown that the control scheme performs satisfactorily even
if parts of the system fail during an earthquake. An
alternative method to derive the control law using finite
elements is also presented.

▼ An improved robot manipulator decentralized non-linear adaptive
controller that performs well in the presence of disturbances with
unknown parameters and non-linearities is presented in this work.
The proposed decentralized adaptive structure is a modification of
the controller developed by Seraji [13-17] and is characterized by an
auxiliary signal that compensates for the unmodeled dynamics and
improves the tracking performance, by a feedforward component based on
the inverse system to ensure high performance over a wide range and by
a PD feedback component of constant gain to improve the speed of
response of the system. As a result, a very accurate and fast path
tracking is achieved despite the non-linearities.
The scheme requires only the measurement of angular speed and
displacement of each joint, and it does not require any knowledge about
the mathematical model of the manipulator. Due to its decentralized
structure, it can be implemented on parallel processors to speed up the
operation.
The main advantages of the proposed control scheme over similar
controllers are that the control activity is smoother, it is less
sensitive to sampling size and to the time period elapsed when the whole
trajectory is traversed, as verified by simulations of several test
conditions of-two of the joints of the PUMA 560 robot arm.

▼ Modern applications in wireless communications systems demand the capability of high transmission rate. Engineers have to find optimum solutions to transmit the signal over fading environments. In this study, we propose the combination of space-time diversity techniques and optimum QAM constellation design, in order to further improve performance. Specifically, we use prior knowledge of the channel behavior to design adequate mapping techniques to generate a QAM constellation from a MPSK constellation typically used in coherent space time block coding application, so that superior performance is achieved. We do this be designing QAM
constellation sets that minimize the symbol error probability from the known information of the transmission medium. We study the system performance for each constellation set in both AWGN and quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels. Various multi-level QAM systems are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation and maximum likelihood detection. System performance is assessed using bit error rate (BER) and symbol error rate (SER) versus SNR plots.

available at the consumers fingertips have pushed the speeds of electronics to extremes.
Bus lines on circuit boards responsible for data communication are being pushed to their
limit to meet these demands. As data busses are pushed to the limits optimization
becomes the key in meeting high speed data transmission goals
Different types of signaling techniques such as PCI express combine data organization
with differential traces, and transmission line reflection techniques to help push more
data down the pipe line with less power. Inevitably, to fully optimize any communication
channel, the physical properties alone have to be considered first. This thesis looks at the
dependence of solder mask materials on temperature and more importantly humidity. In
different regions of the world and even in the United States, the environmental conditions
can vary from 21 C at 10% relative humidity to 38 C and 100% relative humidity. In
order to provide a consistent communication channel, the materials that make up the
channel have to be somewhat electrically impervious to these environmental changes.
This thesis will show through measurements of dielectric constant and loss tangent via
split post dielectric resonators that currently this is not the case. New materials and
specifications will have to be developed and formulated in order to meet the inevitably
higher speed demands from consumers.

▼ New video-conference devices based on omnidirectional multi-camera systems have been emerging in the last few years. These devices require innovative and automated video quality assessment in the earlier stages of their design in order to guarantee competitive product development and quality monitoring. Current quality assessment techniques are not adequate since they are mostly tailored to single video cameras. Even if these techniques are capable of assessing the quality of each video stream separately, the overall quality of a panorama video stream generated with the outputs of multiple cameras stitched together presents strong deviations from the results of subjective quality tests. In this thesis, we present new strategies for assessing the quality of panorama video streams with specific emphasis on the following problems: noticeable calibration differences between adjacent cameras, concentration of motion in limited regions of the panoramic scene, combined vignetting problems, non-uniformity of the surfaces in the seam region between two adjacent cameras. Combining diffferent features from high and low level vision, we evaluate the proposed perceptual quality metric using a set of customized test sequences and verify its correlation with subjective quality tests.

▼ Estimating the carrier frequency from a modulated waveform is one of the most
important functions of a coherent signal receiver. Good performance and low bit
error rates are obtained by coherent demodulation. Therefore, exact knowledge of the
received signal carrier frequency is critical for communication systems. Also due to
the spectral crowding, a high probability of channel interference can be observed.
Under moderate carrier frequency offsets, data-aided estimators have been developed
which have a high accuracy of estimation. However, for high frequency offsets the
frequency estimator does not have the information of data or timing. In this thesis we
propose a parametric based carrier frequency estimation of GMSK, which has
improved performance over ad-hoc methods (delay and multiply) and has high
resolution capability.
In this thesis three methods are implemented over GMSK data to improve the
performance and their results compared with the standard delay and multiply
method. Two of these methods are parametric based estimators and one is a fast
frequency estimator. Parametric based estimators were chosen partly due to their
high resolution capabilities and mainly for their proven performance. Parametric
based estimators were seen to have high computational load, and hence an alternate
fast frequency estimator was implemented. The tradeoffs involved with respect to
computational load and performance were shown.
The contributions of this thesis include the verification of the validity of
applying a parametric based approach on GMSK data, and compare the
performances of parametric methods and fast frequency estimator. It is showii that
such an approach has a better performance compared to non-data aided ad-hoc delay.
