▼ Almost half of all marriages end in divorce (Amato, 2010). This study looked at one possible intervention to curb the rising statistic. Oklahoma State University Outdoor Adventure program has held a Valentine's Day event, Swinging with your Sweetie. During the event couples experienced some games and then completed the high challenge course as a team being supported by another couple on the ground. These events led to the following research questions. Can a day on the challenge course improve a couple's dyadic cohesion, consensus, marital satisfaction, and dyadic trust? Will a married couple experience team-building, group "we-ness", and shared meaning in a one day challenge course experience? The instruments used were the Revised Dyadic Adjustment Scale (Busby, Crane, Larson, & Christiansen, 1995) and the Dyadic Trust Scale (Larzelere & Huston, 1980). The instruments were given before the challenge course day began and at the end of the day. Overall research design was a non-random, pre/posttest design. Oklahoma State University's Challenge Course is unique in design. It allowed couples to participate together on the high course experience with another couple on the ground for transfers. The day on the course involved seven different married couples from Oklahoma. All but one of the couples had been married for five years or less. Three of the couples have children in their home. All the couples indicated they participate in leisure experiences including movies, walking, biking, climbing, and hunting. Participating couples also go on special events or dates at least several times a year. The study hypothesized married couples would show significant difference on the RDAS and the DTS instruments pre and posttests. It was also suspected there could be differences between the male and female participants. However, none of the null hypotheses were rejected based on the ANOVA statistical test. Although the study failed to reject the null hypotheses, the couples showed to be more homogeneous in their posttest scores. This was demonstrated by the variance change in pre/posttest scores. In addition to the variance the couples shared meaningful experiences purposefully chosen using John Gottman's Sound Relationship House (Gottman, 2011). The couple experience and group dynamics prove there was an impact, as one spouse mentioned, "this reminded us we need to do things like this more." ▼ The purpose of this study was to investigate if instructors in a private aquatic training program score students' optimal readiness differently than those in a community non-profit aquatic training program based on the instructors scoring. In this study, the Aquatic Readiness Assessment was utilized for determining optimal readiness for advancement in aquatic education which potentially may lead to a safer aquatic experience. This comparison was to determine if instructors from a private aquatic training program with the Water Safety Instructor training can advance students to the point of optimal readiness to achieve aquatic skills more quickly than instructors from a community non-profit aquatic training program. This study was guided by the following research question: do aquatic instructors employed at a private aquatic facility score learner readiness differently than instructors employed at a community non-profit facility over a 3-week swim class? There were one hundred twenty students (n=120) scored by the ten instructors, five at each facility, using the ARA. The students were divided into two groups, according to the aquatic training center they attend for lessons (private vs. community). Sixty students from each aquatic training center were assessed using the ARA. Instructors scored the first sixty students in each facility which were tested and scored below twenty-seven on the ARA, which assigned them to the stage one aquatic training program. This assured that all students began at the same aquatic skill level. A pretest and posttest, three weeks between tests, was scored by five instructors on each of the sixty students within their facility. A cross-tabulation and chi-square statistic was utilized to examine and compare the advancing number of students between the private and community non-profit aquatic training program. The private advanced thirty-eight students, while the community non-profit advanced forty-seven. The chi-square analysis indicated there was not a significant difference in the pass rate between the private facility vs. community non-profit facility at p≤.05 with a result of p=.071. A Mann-Whitney U non-parametric analysis was utilized to determine the mean score change between the facilities. The analysis showed the instructors in the private facility scored a change of 6.82. A Wilcoxon T non-parametric analysis was utilized to determine the difference between the instructors within each facility. The analysis showed the instructor change in the community non-profit to be 7.13. The results did not show a significant difference in scores among advancing students to level two aquatic training. However, the results did demonstrate an improvement among the students at both facilities and showed the value of aquatic training. ▼ The integration of technology has become a high priority at various levels of education, including higher education. This study focused on discovering and describing the technology being used in higher education mathematics content courses by faculty members at colleges and universities. The research questions focused on what technology was being used by higher education mathematics faculty, how it was being used, what factors would encourage the incorporation of technology, the description of an adopter of technology, who is most likely to use technology to engage students in learning, and challenges that must be overcome to implement technology. The study uses an explanatory sequential mixed methods design which allowed for gathering qualitative data through semi-structured interviews and a vignette to support the quantitative data, which was gathered from a general technology survey administered electronically. The participants included 68 faculty members from research universities, regional public and private universities, and community colleges in a Midwestern state. Results from the study found that technology used by faculty included computers, projector systems, calculators, word processing software, learning management systems, e-mail communication, and the Internet. Technology was found to be predominately used for classroom instruction as a visual aid to present multiple forms of mathematical representations. Factors that could influence the integration of technology into mathematics content courses include the need for a technology resource bank that has appropriate and high-quality tasks that correspond to content and the need for additional time to investigate and implement new technologies. The description of an adopter of technology that evolved during the study was not adequate, but the analysis did show that the attitudes and beliefs of faculty toward technology influenced technology-use preferences. Future research is needed to identify a complete description of an adopter of technology. The study also reinforced the idea that technology-rich classrooms offer an avenue to engage students in learning mathematics. Lastly, the study highlighted challenges that faculty encounter when integrating technology including demands from administration, time for exploration, the need for additional training opportunities, and the lack of technical support. ▼ The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of Oklahoma equestrians and their motivation(s) for leisure riding, as well as compare equivalent-form reliability between the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS) and the revised Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-II). Self-determination theory (SDT) was the basis of the study and the survey instruments. An online survey available from February through August of 2013 was completed by 195 riders, with 186 usable surveys. Nonparametric statistics were used to analyze responses, as assumptions for parametric statistics were not met. Responding Oklahoma equestrians were primarily female, ride mainly for fun, and have been riding horses for over 21 years. A third of the respondents were aged 50 to 59 years. Eighty percent ride Western style; two-thirds of the respondents have families involved with horses and two-thirds of the respondents also ride once or twice a week. Half of the responding equestrians came from households earning 25,001 to 75,000 a year before taxes. Responding Oklahoma equestrians ride primarily for fun and accomplishment, with few riding primarily to gain more knowledge of the activity. Riders in this study were primarily intrinsically motivated, followed by extrinsically motivated at the identified level, based on the autonomy continuum as described by SDT. In general, overall motivation (as measured by an overall SDT score) increases as frequency of riding increases. The SMS and SMS-II are significantly different in all subscales measured on both instruments. The original SMS does not measure the integrated level of extrinsic motivation and also gives more weight to the measure of intrinsic motivation, because it measures three separate levels of it. The revised SMS (SMS-II) not only adds a measure for integrated regulation, but also measures intrinsic motivation in general, giving intrinsic motivation a more appropriate degree of influence on the overall SDT score. The SMS-II is the instrument recommended for further studies, although the three separate measures of intrinsic motivation from the original SMS are still useful in determining what kinds of intrinsic motivation are at play within an individual.
