▼ When designers design products, they will avoid the distortion of signal as possible. However, they sometimes may make input signal propagate in unusual form. For instance, military airplanes can be coated with special material on the body surface, and it cannot cause normal reflection and scattering when radiations touch on the body surface. Therefore, radars will not receive expected information to predict their movements. This special material is commonly known as invisible material, and anisotropic material is one of the choice of materials.
FDTD is widely used in analysis of electromagnetic wave. Since there are a few disadvantages on the analysis of anisotropic material with Yeeâs grid, Lebedev grid becomes famous because of its better results on the same issue. However, except the advantages, Lebedev grid may face a lot of trouble, such as bigger numerical distortion and complicated excitation.
As a result, this thesis will provide a method which combines two kinds of grid that have been mentioned above to have both of their advantages and achieve higher accuracy and efficiency. Therefore, the issue of anisotropic material can be solved more efficiently and accurately.

▼ n recent years, the development of wireless communication system has grown rapidly. Long Term Evolution (LTE) can support wireless network to fast-moving mobile terminals. In this thesis, for stable and high data rate transmission in the railway wireless communication, vertically/horizontally dual-polarization omnidirectional multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) train antennas, which are mounted on the roof of high-speed rail trains, with dual-band 1.7~1.9 GHz and 2.5~2.7 GHz are presented.
First, an omnidirectional dual-band monopole antenna is designed for vertical polarization. In addition to co-designing antenna matching and antenna fixing mechanism, we also study the impact of ground plane on monopole radiation pattern. Secondary, to achieve omnidirectional radiation pattern in horizontal polarization similar to a magnetic dipole antenna, a loop antenna with a uniform and in-phase current distribution is required, but is difficult to design. Derived from Alford antenna design and multi-mode resonance, an omnidirectional broadband horizontally polarized antenna is designed. Furthermore, a dual-band horizontally polarized antenna is achieved by the self-supporting feed architecture and dual-band feed circuit design. Thirdly, we present omnidirectional dual-polarization dual-band MIMO antennas with an elliptical column size of ÏÃ91mmÃ51mmÃ61mm. The isolation for the proposed antennas is higher than 25dB at a small separation distance between antennas (~0.19λ_1.8GHz and ~0.26λ_2.6GHz, where λ_1.8GHz and λ_2.6GHz are the free space wavelength at 1.8 GHz and 2.6 GHz, respectively). Experimental and simulated results of the proposed antennas are presented and discussed. Finally, some omnidirectional horizontally polarized antenna applications are presented. Compared with the metal reflector, an omnidirectional horizontally polarized antenna on the top of electromagnetic band-gap structure (EBG) reflector has good return loss and radiation patterns. Moreover, an omnidirectional horizontally polarized antenna array is developed for base station applications.

▼ Recently, radio spectrum is in high demand as the usage of the spectrum increases day by day at an enormous rate; there is a need to find a solution to efficiently utilize these insufficient resources. Cognitive radio is a huge step towards this goal. Cognitive radio has become a promising technology thanks to its inherent spectrum sensing capability and frequency-agile radio functions for efficient spectrum utilization. In order to achieve a cognitive radio antenna system, we have to design a frequency reconfigurable antenna and a wideband sensing antenna. On the other hand, a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system is a well-known technique to enhance the performance of wireless communication systems. Quite a few research has been available in each individual field but very few approaches are found in literature where both are combined and utilized.
A cognitive radio MIMO antenna is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna consists of two reconfigurable printed monopole antennas and a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed wideband sensing antenna located between the two antennas. The structure is specially designed for antenna miniature. For multi-channel wireless communication systems, it is essential that the designed multi-antenna would have high isolation between the antenna ports. To this end, the wideband antenna at the middle is utilized as a structure to enhance the isolation of two monopoles. When properly designed, the MIMO antenna can be electronically tuned over the lower ultrawideband (UWB) frequency band (2300â6300 MHz) using two pairs of varactor diodes. The wideband sensing antenna is used to cover a wide range frequency band from 2.2 GHz to more than 7 GHz. The proposed antenna elements develop a complete antenna platform for cognitive radio (CR) applications. The overall size of the antenna is set to be 60 Ã 40 mm2.

▼ In a high-speed digital system, issues of the signal integrity (SI) associated with the high-speed circuit and printed circuit boards (PCB) become more important as the operating frequency increases. To obtain accurate results of SI problems in the high-speed digital systems, circuit devices (active or passive) are simulated in a full-wave electromagnetic simulator to analyze the interaction between PCB and circuits. The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is one of the most useful methods of full-wave electromagnetic simulation for analyzing passive and active circuits on a PCB. This dissertation presents two efficient schemes for processing arbitrary lumped devices and a novel scheme for modeling diodes into FDTD method. For arbitrary linear two-terminal circuits, an efficient formulation that is based on control theory is presented. A novel FDTD approach that is based on Crank-Nicolson method is proposed to incorporate multi-port circuits into FDTD. The accuracy of the proposed approaches is confirmed by comparing results obtained using them with those of the equivalent current source method (ECSM) and Agilentâs commercial software, ADS. A novel FDTD approach that efficiently incorporates nonlinear devices such as diodes by solving a quadratic equation in each time step to update the electric field is developed. The novelty of this proposed method is that the quadratic equation always has real solutions. The stability of the proposed method is numerically demonstrated and the accuracy is verified by comparison with ECSM and ADS.

▼ An antenna miniaturization technique that can substantially miniaturize an antenna to allow its incorporation into a compact package for WLAN (2.4â2.484 GHz) applications is proposed. For this purpose, the semiconductor-based glass integrated passive device (GIPD) manufacturing technology is adopted. To facilitate the design, an equivalent circuit approach is applied to the loop-based antenna in which the structure is conveniently integrated with the ground trace in the semiconductor fabrication process to improve both miniaturization and radiation efficiency. Under these conditions, the resonant length of the loop antenna is not necessarily one-wavelength so the antenna can be made electrically small. This approach was extended to construct a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna in a small IPD. The gap between the driven strip and the loop structure functions as an internal tuning circuit, thus contributing to antenna miniaturization. Moreover, the multiple antenna elements are arranged to construct a MIMO system. Furthermore, a good isolation (S21 < â15 dB) is achieved using a space of only 0.3 mm (0.005 λ) spacing between two antennas.
In addition, isolation enhancement between two closely spaced antennas was achieved based on the reaction theorem. A MIMO antenna consists of radiation elements and a ground plane that were located on the top and bottom side of the substrate, respectively. In order to generate an equivalent magnetic current source, a slot was set on the ground nearby the transmission line. Then, the electric fields cross the slot so that it generates an equivalent magnetic current source to diminish the effect caused by the coupling electric current source, resulting in a lower magnitude of the S21. Single, dual and wideband antenna applications were demonstrated.

▼ A measurement method for characterizing RFID chip has been proposed that can measure the approximate Read/Write threshold power and impedance of RFID strap with minimum operating procedures; furthermore, the complicated RF facilities are not required. Obtaining the specifications of RFID strap allows designers to estimate maximum read range of designed RFID tag in advance. Therefore, the implemented cost and design cycle times can be reduced substantially. For the verification of the final match condition of assembled RFID tag, a direct measurement technique has been developed, which not only can verify the final impedance match condition of the assembled RFID tags, but can also be used to identify the resistance and reactance mismatch condition between the RFID chip and antenna. The measurement data obtained from the verification method can also be used to estimate the assembly error introduced by different mounting methods. The use of the corrected circuit model of the RFID chip impedance, which includes the assembly error, helps improve the accuracy of the RFID tag design. In the RFID metal tag design, a series of low profile and miniature RFID tags, which is directly attached on metallic objects, has been developed. A series of low cost and easily produced RFID tag antenna structures also has been realized for RFID application on hanging metallic tag, which makes the RFID solution well suited for metallic tag of labeling system that requires integration of RFID technology. The attached RFID metal tag and the metallic RFID hanging tag cover most of the RFID application on steel products in the steel industry.

▼ In recent years, the development of wireless communication systems has grown rapidly. The existing spectrum is gradually becoming insufficient. In order to further increase the data transmission rate, utilize the spectrum effectively, and improve the security of communications, radio of higher frequencies can be used. Therefore, higher frequency communication becomes more popular. This results in more and more millimeter wave applications. Because of the short transmission distance of millimeter wave, a high gain antenna is required to overcome this problem. In this thesis, we propose high directivity and high gain antenna arrays which cover the whole unlicensed band.
In this thesis, we also propose a wideband and high directivity antenna with end-fire radiation. After designing two different structures of Yagi antennas, we accomplish two kinds of 1Ã4 Yagi antenna arrays to enhance the gain. One antenna type is the Yagi antenna which consists of the typical balun, for the differential feed; the other type is the antenna which has a miniature balun structure and uses three drivers to construct the quasi-Yagi antenna. In this thesis, both of the 1Ã4 Yagi antenna arrays have a bandwidth of more than 10 GHz. Moreover, one of the 1Ã4 Yagi antenna array achieves a gain of 14.3 dBi, the other achieves a gain of 15 dBi. In order to reduce the cost and expand its applications in products, we can base our design on the 1Ã4 Yagi antenna array structure to derive the 2Ã4 Yagi antenna array.

▼ In recent years, the development of wireless communication system has grown rapidly, efficient utilization of the available spectrum has become a more important feature for broadband communication system. Therefore, the cognitive radio (CR) concept has been proposed. A CR technology can provide better spectrum utilization by sensing the occupied frequency band and switching to another frequency. With the trend toward higher data rate, MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) technology plays an essential role for the future wireless communication. Thus, the concept of CR system combination with MIMO technology is a potential solution.
ããIn this thesis, a frequency reconfigurable MIMO antenna with high isolation is proposed for CR applications. This structure is composed of two planar reconfigurable monopole antennas and a wideband sensing antenna on the single substrate. For MIMO antenna system, mutual coupling is a considerable problem. The wideband sensing antenna at the center of the substrate is used to enhance the isolation between two reconfigurable antennas. The dual-element MIMO antenna can cover a wide range frequency band from 2.18~6.19 GHz by tuning varactor diodes. The frequency reconfigurable ratio that can be achieved is 2.85. The wideband sensing antenna is capable of sweeping the frequency band over 2.17~6.15 GHz. The proposed antenna structure can be applied to cognitive radio system applications.

▼ In recent years, the development of wireless communication systems has grown rapidly, and the requirement of high data rate is also soaring significantly. To meet the requirements of high speed data rate transmission, the IEEE defined the standard of 802.11ad for new wireless communication technology. It uses the 60-GHz band to provide wireless communication. However, the range of millimeter wave propagating in air is short. In order to overcome this disadvantage, high gain antennas are required. In this thesis, we propose the patch antenna array which has the property of high gain and wideband operating from 57 to 66 GHz.
Traditional patch antenna has the advantages of high radiation efficiency and low profile. The high radiation efficiency has superiority for high propagating attenuation in the 60-GHz band. But, the bandwidth of patch antenna is only less than 5%. Regarding this, we apply aperture coupled feed and the bandwidth is extended to more than 8%. However, the traditional aperture coupled feed structure has an air layer and the air layer can only be implemented by ion implantation and razer process, both of these two processes cost a lot. To avoid expensive fabrication cost, we adopt stacked structure to replace the original design (with the air layer) and maintain the performances.
The request of bandwidth is about 15% of the band from 57 to 66 GHz. Considering that we need to achieve wideband and high gain performances simultaneously, we utilize the stronger coupling between neighbor elements of series-array, to enhance bandwidth to 20%. In the meantime, the gain performance is also improved to 8.2dBi on 1x2 series-array from 6dBi on a single antenna. Moreover, comparing with parallel-array, series-array feeding network is much simpler and easy to design. The gain enhancement is not as good as parallel-array feeding network design when we increase antenna elements to series-array feeding network design directly. Therefore, we combine both series and parallel feeding network, and design a 4x4 aperture coupled feed path array with the properties of easy fabrication, wideband and gain performance reaches 15dBi.

▼ This dissertation aims to study and design a compact single-band and dual-band bandpass filter and EMI filter array for a personal portable system using low-temperature co-fired ceramic technology. First, a compact bandpass filter with wide stop-band in land grid array (LGA) is proposed. The design uses quasi-lumped LC resonator and open stub to create smaller size and better upper stopband performance. In the next, a new approach for design of a compact dual-band bandpass filter using series λ/4 resonators and an open-stub line with multiple transmission zeros is presented due to the requirement of different communication standards. The proposed device has two passband responses with low insertion losses and multiple transmission zeros (TZ) to deliver a wide stopband with high rejection level. To meet the requirements of various operating bands in different regions worldwide, reduce the number of components, and conserve space in the PCB, it is desirable to use a dual-band bandpass filter that covers all operating bands and that can be realized in a single integrated design. Therefore, a compact multilayer dual-band bandpass filter design with shunt architecture is proposed. The proposed dual-band filter has a dual passband to meet the requirement for different operating frequencies. The first (I) and second (II) passbands with small insertion losses have bandwidths near 380 MHz and 1350 MHz to cover all IEEE 802.11 bands in different regions of the world. This dual-band filter has multiple transmission zeros to supply a high rejection level as well. The filter was fabricated using low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology, resulting in miniaturized dimensions of only 2.5 mm (L) x 2.0 mm (W) x 0.7 mm (H). Finally, the measured results are in a good agreement with the simulated values.
Following the developments in personal portable system which has multimode function, it could have EM interference at the interface. To solve this issue, a compact EMI filter array is proposed in the second part. This component is a full-integrated electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter array which was realized using mixed type material that is described for the first time, and this device is implemented via LTCC (low-temperature co-fired ceramic) technology . To miniaturize the size of the component and retain the high rejection and low insertion loss, a mixed powder material with a higher permittivity and lower loss tangent is used in the design and fabrication of the filter. The material system used in this study is BaNd2Ti4O12 (BNT) + Ni-Cu-Zn ferrite. The addition of Bi2O3 reduces the sintering temperature to less than 900 â. A compact EMI filter array architecture with a wide rejection band and sufficient isolation is introduced as well. In development of wireless communications, the spectrum for global 4G-LTE covers different frequencies of 700 â 2600 MHz. In this investigation, an EMI filter array is presented that rejects unwanted frequencies from 700â2690 MHz and covers all 4G-LTE bands. The overall dimensions of…

▼ Multi-band coil modules facilitate efficient access to distinct-band, high-power, or rapid-charging wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. It will be one of the important WPT research topics in the future. A dual-band WPT coil module is presented as an example of multi-band WPT applications in this dissertation. Different from multi-coil dual-band WPT, no unwanted cross coupling exists in this dual-band coil module because it uses only one coil for power coupling. An analytical process of the dual-band coil module design guideline is presented. By selecting appropriate coil parameters, the improvement of coil power transfer efficiency in the weakly coupling region can be obtained and the frequency splitting in the strongly coupling region can be avoided.
When the frequency ratio between two operating frequencies is large, dual-band WPT do not function efficiently. To overcome this problem, the enhanced dual-band coil modules that adopt repeaters in the WPT system is proposed. In comparison to the conventional analysis of a single-band repeater, the circuit-based analysis for repeaters applied at various dual-band coil modules is presented. The analytical results provide a design methodology applicable to diverse types of dual-band coil modules with a repeater in the WPT system. The experimental results are consistent with the circuit-based analysis. Therefore, efficient dual-band coil modules are obtained in this dissertation and they facilitate the realization and application of multi-band WPT systems.

▼ First, one of the purposes of this thesis is to estimate the complete crosstalk effects including the package and the pads on the surface acoustic wave (SAW) substrate. A new approach based on finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) with equivalent current source method is applied. Two kinds of patterns of one-port SAW resonators with the same package structure and inter-digital transducer (IDT) design are studied. Verification with the measurement results shows that our method is able to obtain good agreement and be used to observe the influence from the SAW pattern.
Second, the equivalent current source method is extended to model the excitation of human-bodyâs electrostatic discharge (ESD) situations. The efficiencies of sacrificial electrodes are also discussed. Finally, a novel sacrificial electrode with fractal to protect SAW devices from ESD break is proposed. Comparing with traditional electrode, the simulation results show that fractal can improve the protective efficiency greatly.
Finally, a novel analysis model that can be used to analyze and optimize the impedance of an RFID transponder integrated circuit (IC) which uses backscatter encoding based on simultaneously maintaining the BER of the reader and maximizing the received power of the transponder IC is proposed. The analysis method utilizes mapping from signal constellation of the backscattered signal to the Smith chart to relate the two parameters. Given the system specification and characteristics of the reader and transponder antennas, the optimum impedances of transponder IC for binary communication system can be easily designed by using this model.

▼ This dissertation investigates the design of a quarter-wave polarization transformer and presents some options for a high-performance polarizer in both normally incident and obliquely incident cases. Then, a novel concept for investigating polarization transformation is presented. Based on this concept, the broad axial ratio bandwidth polarizer, composed by anisotropic and chiral media, is accomplished using genetic algorithm.
For the normally incident case, we present some methods to eliminate the reflection for designing novel high-performance polarizer in two situations. The polarizers provide perfect linear-to-circular polarization transformation without insertion loss at the center frequency. Then, two novel designs are presented for a high-performance quarter-wave polarizer in the obliquely incident case. In these designs, the material parameters of uniaxial media can be arbitrary. The polarizer is achieved by using only one layer of the uniaxial anisotropic medium without conventional anti-reflection coatings because of the unique property of the oblique incidence. The polarizer can produce a perfect linear-to-circular polarization transformation without any insertion loss at the center frequency.
The equivalent circuit concept is presented to study polarization transformations. This concept is more convenient when dealing with polarization transformation problems in multiple layers. The anisotropic medium and the chiral medium can be regarded as circuit elements. Specifically, we show that anisotropic media can be seen as transformers and chiral media as transmission lines. Once the equivalent circuits are determined, the microwave network theory can be used to investigate the polarization transformation. An example is used to demonstrate the transformation from the horizontally polarized wave to the circularly polarized wave employing the equivalent circuit concept. Based on the equivalents concept, we present broad axial ratio bandwidth quarter-wave polarizer composed of mutilayered uniaxial anisotropic media and chiral media using genetic algorithm. In our design, the constitutive parameters of materials can be arbitrary. This broadband polarizer can be realized through the adjustment of the thickness of materials. The nearly optimal and suitable thickness of each cell is determined by using a genetic algorithm. Two numerical examples with three and five cells are presented to validate the design. The axial ratio bandwidths of about 84.1% and 92.8% can be achieved, more than double the maximum theoretical bandwidth for the case of the single uniaxial anisotropic slab.

▼ A full wave finite-difference time-domain method (FDTD) combined with thin-wire and thin-slot algorithms to analyze a metamaterial fabricated with periodic mushroom structures, is proposed in this dissertation. This proposed method is suitable for analyzing problems involving large structures with fine structural details. A periodic analysis for mushroom structures is presented. Only a single unit mushroom cell is required to present the phenomena of infinite periodicity with the help of periodic boundary conditions (PBCs).
The composite right-/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) approach is introduced and used to approximate CRLH metamaterial through lumped L and C. Finally, several CRLH metamaterial mushroom-based structures are investigated. A 19 by 8 flat microwave lens and a parabolic microwave lens structure composed of 410 unit mushroom cells are investigated. These structures demonstrate negative refractive index (NRI) characteristics while operate in the left-hand (LH) region. The simulation and measurement results of one- and two-dimensional CRLH mushroom-based structures are compared.

▼ Developing full-wave simulators for high-frequency circuit simulation is a topic many researchers have investigated. Generally speaking, methods invoking analytic pre-processing of the deviceâs V-I relations (admittance or impedance) are computationally more efficient than methods employing numerical procedure to iteratively process the device at each time step. For circuits providing complex functionality, two-port or possibly multi-port devices whether passive or active, are sure to appear in the circuits. Therefore, extensions to currently available full-wave methods for handling one-port devices to process multi-port devices would be useful for hybrid microwave circuit designs. In this dissertation, an efficient scheme for processing arbitrary multi-port devices in the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is proposed. The deviceâs admittance is analytically pre-processed and fitted into one grid cell. With an improved time-stepping expression, the computation efficiency is further increased. Multi-port devices in the circuit can be systematically incorporated and analyzed in a full-wave manner. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparison with results from the equivalent current-source method and is numerically stable.
