▼ Temporal data mining techniques have been widely used to extract desirable time-related knowledge from existing databases. However, most of the existing studies only considered different lifespans of items in a set of transactions to find general temporal association rules. In reality, some products in a store may be put on shelf and taken off shelf multiple times, and some biases may exist in the temporal association rules discovered. Besides, it is common for a company to have a chain of retail sites in different locations, and it is thus very critical to flexibly obtain association rules from portions of data with the consideration of on-shelf situations of items in a multi-site environment for providing relevant online decision supports to users. In this thesis, we thus handle the problems of mining temporal association rules with the consideration of on-shelf situations of items in a multi-site environment. In the first part of the thesis, we introduce a new research issue named on-shelf association rule mining (OAR) for temporal association rule mining with the consideration of time periods of items. This problem is more difficult than traditional association-rule mining due to this issue without the downward-closure property. Hence, an effective three-phase mining approach is developed to find such rules in a temporal database. In the second part of the thesis, we introduce another new issue named online multi-site on-shelf association rule mining (MOAR) with the consideration of on-shelf locations and time periods of items. Meanwhile, an online mining approach is also developed for generation of online multi-site on-shelf association rules, and an effective strategy is designed to tighten the upper-bounds of supports for candidate itemsets by using the multi-site pattern relation information. The experimental results on simulation datasets show the effectiveness of the two types of rules (OAR and MOAR) and the performance of the proposed mining approaches under different parameter settings. ▼ Utility mining, which takes the quantities and profits of items in a set of transactions into consideration, has become an emerging research topic due to its wide applications. Most of the existing studies on utility mining, however, only consider data coming from a single database. In reality, large organizations usually have a chain of stores in different locations. Besides, how to flexibly response to different usersâ query conditions from multiple data sources is also a big challenge. Accordingly, in this thesis, we develop appropriate online mining approaches for finding high utility itemsets in a multi-site environment. We first introduce a new research issue called online multi-site utility mining, which considers not only the quantities and profits of items in transactions, but also the time periods and locations of the items in a multi-site environment. We then propose a Three-Phase Online Multi-site Utility mining algorithm (abbreviated as TP-OMU) to efficiently and effectively find such patterns. A useful strategy to predict the upper-bounds of utility values of items in a multi-site environment is also designed to reduce the number of candidates in the mining process. We next extend the idea above to on-shelf consideration. Items in the chain stores may be put on the shelf and taken the off shelf multiple times. We thus introduce another research issue called online multi-site on-shelf utility mining, which considers not only the utilities of items, but also the on-shelf locations and time periods of the items in a multi-site environment. Meanwhile, an efficient mining method is developed as well to cope with the problem. Finally, the experiments on synthetic datasets are conducted to show the effectiveness of the two kinds of patterns and the performance of the two proposed approaches under different parameter settings. The results demonstrate that they can perform well in a multi-site environment. ▼ Utility mining algorithms have recently been proposed to discover high utility itemsets from a quantitative database. Factors such as profits or prices are concerned in measuring the utility values of purchased items for revealing more useful knowledge to managers. Nearly all the existing algorithms are performed in a batch way to extract high utility itemsets. In real-world applications, transactions may, however, be inserted, deleted or modified in a database. The batch mining procedure requires more computational time for rescanning the whole updated database to maintain the up-to-date knowledge. In the first part of this thesis, two algorithms for data insertion and data deletion are respectively proposed for efficiently updating the discovered high utility itemsets based on pre-large concepts. The proposed algorithms firstly partition itemsets into three parts with nine cases according to whether they are large (high), pre-large or small transaction-weighted utilization in the original database. Each part is then performed by its own procedure to maintain and update the discovered high utility itemsets. Based on the pre-large concepts, the original database only need to be rescanned for much fewer itemsets in the maintenance process of high utility itemsets. Besides, the risk of privacy threats usually exists in the process of data collection and data dissemination. Sensitive or personal information are required to be kept as private information before they are shared or published. Privacy-preserving utility mining (PPUM) has thus become an important issue in recent years. In the second part of this thesis, two evolutionary privacy-preserving utility mining algorithms to hide sensitive high utility itemsets in data sanitization for inserting dummy transactions and deleting transactions are respectively proposed. The two evolutionary privacy-preserving utility mining algorithms find appropriate transactions for insertion and deletion in the data-sanitization process. They adopt a flexible evaluation function with three factors. Different weights are assigned to the three factors depending on usersâ preference. The maintenance algorithms proposed in the first part of this thesis are also used in the GA-based approach to reduce the cost of rescanning databases, thus speeding up the evaluation process of chromosomes. Experiments are conducted as well to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms. ▼ Data mining techniques have been widely applied to extract desirable knowledge from existing databases for specific purposes. In real-world applications, a database usually involves the time periods when transactions occurred and exhibition periods of items, in addition to the items bought in the transactions. To handle this kind of data, temporal data mining techniques are thus proposed to find temporal association rules from a database with time. Most of the existing studies only consider different item lifespans to find general temporal association rules, and this may neglect some useful information. For example, while an item within the whole exhibition period may not be a frequent one, it may be frequent within part of this time. To deal with this, the concept of a hierarchy of time is thus applied to temporal data mining along with suitable time granules, as defined by users. In this thesis, we thus handle the problem of mining temporal association rules with a hierarchy of time granules from a temporal database, and also propose three novel mining algorithms for different item lifespan definitions. In the first definition, the lifespan of an item in a time granule is calculated from the first appearance time to the end time in the time granule. In the second definition, the lifespan of an item in a time granule is evaluated from the publication time of the item to the end time in the time granule. Finally, in the third definition, the lifespan of an item in a time granule is measured by its entire exhibition period. The experimental results on a simulation dataset show the performance of the three proposed algorithms under different item lifespan definitions, and compare the mined temporal association rules with and without consideration of the hierarchy of time granules under different parameter settings.
