▼ Ocean ambient noise is one of the important parameters which affect sonar system performance. If the ocean ambient noise is estimated accurately, the prediction accuracy of sonar system performance can be promoted significantly. Ocean ambient noise includes various and diverse sources, so the characteristics of the ocean ambient noise should be analyzed by long-term observations and statistical methods. Therefore, ocean ambient noise database was developed to facilitate management, preservation, and application of these datasets which increase with time. There were two datasets of acoustic and three datasets of wind speed in this database at this point. To develop this database systematically, this study applied Entity-Relationship Model to describe the relationship between different data and Relational Model to design the required categories. The database was constructed based on Microsoft Office Access, and user-friendly graphical interfaces based on MATLAB were provided for users: wind speed regression, time series, spectrogram, and spectrum tendency for users to query the database. As the results of analysis, the intermittent, unknown, and high-level sources at southwestern sea of Taiwan in spring and summer made the noise level of low frequency about 8 to 10 dB higher in the night-time than that in the day-time. According to wind speed regression analysis, if there were sufficient data, the method would be practicable to pick a wind speed data nearby the location of acoustic data for noise estimation. As the results of the typhoon effects analysis, the noise level of 1 to 8 kHz was increased significantly by typhoons. Besides, the noise level didnât decrease immediately and significantly after the pass of typhoon because of southwestern air current caused typhoon. After the database was developed, new acoustic data will keep being measured and collected, and the network capability will be integrated into the database to make the database more accessible to users. ▼ Six sciaenid species including Johnius tingi, Johnius sina, Pennahia argentata, Pennahia pawak, Chrysochir aureus and Otolithes rubber from the western coast of Taiwan were studied. Pennahia argentataâs disturbance sound was most distinct in which the pulse period is almost 2~3 times larger than that the other five sciaenid species. The dominant frequencies of C. aureus and O. rubberâs disturbance calls were low (i.e. usually below 500 Hz). In the six sciaenids there was significant difference in the pulse repetition rate, which may be a useful parameter for recognition of sciaenid species. Among the other fishes surveyed in this study, the inter-pulse interval of pearlperchâs (Glaucosoma buergeri) disturbance call is very short or nearly zero. The pulse is composed a low frequency and a high frequency parts, and the frequency range is wide. Most energy was concentrated in the 2nd and 3rd pulses of the Priacanthus macracanthusâs disturbance soundand its pulse period is not stable. The special acoustic character of Pelates quadrilineatusâs disturbance sound is the extremely short inter-pulse interval (< 1ms).The seacatfish Arius maculatesâs disturbance sound can be sorted into three types. Typeâ is a low frequency sound and usually under 1000Hz; it is very similar to sciaenidsâ calls with stable pulse period and dominant frequency. Compared to Typeâ , Typeâ¡ and Typeâ¢ were high-frequency sounds (i.e. usually up to 8kHz) and their pulse periods are less stable. Pomadasys kaakanâs disturbance sound is emitted by stridulating of its pharyngeal teeth and these sounds were high frequency (i.e. usually higher than 10 kHz). Both Johnius tingi females and males possess extrinsic sonic muscles. The dominant frequency of the malesâ disturbance call is significant higher than that of femalesâ and the length of malesâ sonic muscles are also significantly longer than that of femalesâ. It is hypothesized that a longer sonic muscle can generate higher tension leading to a higher frequency sound. Comparing my data to the eleven sound types collected from the western coast by other workers in which the sound producers are still unknown, Type A, Type F, and Type G are more similar to that of the disturbance sound of J. sinaãP. pawak and J. belengerii, respectively. ▼ The goal of development of sound database for marine fishes in Taiwan not only preserves data, but also wants to provide a common ground of data sharing to increase the efficiency for the study of fish behavior, automatic recognition, localization, and tracking. In order to provide the sound quality in terms of signal-to-noise ratio to users, the fish sound recording will be analyzed before uploading. Because most available data were recorded either in the field or in fish tank, the fish sounds were extracted by using two different automatic detection methods. If fish sound recordings were from the field, the Time Endpoint Detection was applied by the processing a 0.5-s time frame with 50 % overlapping. Then the energy of the time frame was obtained by the sum of square of amplitude and the median of the energy plus a standard deviation was established as the threshold to extract fish sounds. If the recording was made in the fish tank, the Frequency Endpoint Detection was applied by 0.5-s time frame with 50 % overlapping. Then each time frame will be transformed into spectrum and the energy ratio of each frequency will be calculated from the spectrum. Finally the information entropy was obtained from the energy ratio and the detection threshold was set on standard deviation above the median of the information entropy. From two different automatic detection methods, the sound quality was presented in the signal-to-noise ratio, which was the average power of signal divided by average power of the background noise. The fish sound database was a 3-Tier system and developed by PHP and MySQL. In order to reduce the storage size and maintain the integrity of data, the Relational Model was applied. Firstly, the recording data were conceptually represented as Entity-Relationship Diagram(ERD). Secondly, the ERD was transformed to relational schemas. Thirdly, the schemas was normalized by first, second, and third forms. To improve the usersâ efficiency the sound database provides three interfaces. One was data uploading, another was data searching according to the keyword of creature name, recording area, and recording time, the other was data comparing by recording number. ▼ ãThe ocean ambient noise of coast is mainly influenced by sea waves, boats or ships, or humanâs coast activities. Among them, most of the ambient noise is from the breaking wave noise caused by wind, and its frequency range is quite wide (0.5~50 kHz). The breaking wave noise mechanism of surf zone is very complex, and has a variety of signal features. In this research, the location is at the Sizih Bay near Kaohsiung Harbor. Hydrophone was used to collect the noise and the wave motion process of surf zone was recorded simultaneously with a digital video camera. It was shown from the experiment results, as the wave evolved in the surf zone, it would eventually become unstable and collapsed, so a large amount of air would be trapped in water and forming bubble clouds. The oscillating bubble cloud from breaking wave would generate high frequency sound. The results also indicated that when breaking wave reached the location hydrophone, a wide band pulse sound was generated with a level as high as 120 dB. In the analysis of each frequency (1k, 2k, 3k, 4k, 5k Hz), due to the oscillating effects air bubbles after breaking wave, the noise level at 2~5k Hz were higher as compared to that without breaking wave passing the hydrophone. The last result was also validated by the time integral of the noise energy through out the wave evolution. In addition to the process of breaking waves and residual air bubbles under breaking waves contributing to the breaking wave source, for example discussed in the study breaking waveâs period and breaking wave height, the results from these two studies found, when the longer the breaking wave period , the breaking wave SPL will be bigger with the longer the breaking wave period. And in the breaking wave height, when the breaking wave height much higher, breaking wave SPL will be much bigger too. And learned from these two conclusions , breaking wave periods and height will make the breaking waves source level caused by changes. ▼ According to earlier surveys, there were nine sound types in areas adjacent to the estuaries of nine major rivers in Taiwan, and the frequency range of the H-type sound was as high as 6 kHz. The producers of this sound type have not been defined yet. Sea catfish can make two kinds of sounds: stridulatory sound and drumming sound. The former is pulsed, broad-band and high-frequency, whereas the latter is harmonic, and low-frequency (less than 1 kHz). Spotted catfish (Arius maculates) is the most common demersal species in the west coast of Taiwan. The aims of the study were (1) to find out if H-type sound is presence in Cigu lagoon; (2) to describe the disturbance (hand-held) sounds emitted by A. maculates; (3) to find clues to support that the stridulatory sound of A. maculates is the H-type sound; (4) to find if there is sexual difference in the sounds of A. maculates; (5) to find the relationship between sound characteristics and intrinsic characters of the fish; (6) to define the reproductive season of A. maculates; (7) to find out if there is correlation between the spawning season of A. maculates in Cigu lagoon and presence of the high-frequency sounds in the lagoon. Bimonthly sound recordings were made in Cigu lagoon between February to December 2009. Pulsed, broad-band and high-frequency sounds were present in April, June, and August; number of sounds per minute was higher in August (mean: 52.9 sounds/ min). The sound were characterized by: sound duration: 160.6 Â± 16.6 ms, dominant frequency: 2840 Â± 867.3 Hz, pulse period 12.6 Â± 0.45 ms, pulse duration: 6.0 Â± 0.82 ms, inter-pulse-interval: 6.6 Â± 0.84 ms. The stridulatory sounds of A. maculates are pulsed, broad-band and high-frequency - sound duration: 64.0 Â± 16.74 ms, dominant frequency: 1251 Â± 419.8 Hz, pulse period 7.7 Â± 2.69 ms, pulse duration 5.3 Â± 1.69 ms, inter-pulse-interval 2.4 Â± 1.93 ms. Drumming sounds of A. maculates are harmonic, low frequency - sound duration: 58.5 Â± 25.54 ms, dominant frequency: 442 Â± 96.3 Hz fundamental frequency: 163 Â± 30.98 Hz, pulse period: 6.3 Â± 1.21 ms, pulse duration: 6.3 Â± 1.19 ms. There was significant sexual difference in the stridulatory sound characters including pulse period, inter-pulse-interval, pulse number; females are higher than males in these parameters. There was significant sexual difference in the drumming sound (including dominant frequency) as well; males are higher than females in these parameter. Pulse period of the stridulatory sounds increased significantly with increasing standard body length. Pulse period and pulse duration of the drumming sounds both increased significantly with increasing standard body length, whereas dominant frequency and fundamental frequency both decreased significantly with size. GSI and oocyte diameters were higher in February, April, and June with a peak in April. Reproductive period was considered occurring from April to August (i.e. in spring and summer). This reproductive period coincides with the peak of vocalization. ▼ Batrachoididae, one of the most well-studied soniferous fishes, are typical examples of fish using intrinsic sonic muscles to excite vibration of swim bladder to emit sound. Most fishes possess a single swim bladder including the Batrachoididae. However, the grunting toadfish (Allenbatrachus grunniens) was found to have two separated swim bladders located in the dorsal part of the abdominal cavity; the size of the swim bladders were quite similar. Sonic muscles were firmly attached to the lateral side of each swim bladder. The aims of this study were to (1) investigate the specialized swimbladder morphology and the acoustic signals of the grunting toadfish (A. grunniens), (2) to falsify the hypothesis that this unique form of swim bladder is a synapomorphic character, and species that possess this character are sister groups. The vocal repertoire in grunting toadfish can generally divided into two types â grunt and boatwhistle. Grunts were harmonic signals with shorter call duration, and could be emitted alone as single grunt (i.e., hand-held grunt) or in series (known as grunt train). Boatwhistles were also hamonic but much longer in call duration and usually appeared in succession. A small portion of signals were found to have acoustic beats, which was previously described in the three-spined toadfish (Batrachomoeus trispinosus), which also possess a pair of swim bladders. Therefore, signals with acoustic beats may be a key character for generating sound by two separated swim bladders. Comparing the morphological measurements of swim bladders indicated that there were no significant differences between swim bladders on different sides. However, comparisons between genders showed that the width, thickness, and weight of sonic muscle in females were significantly higher than males. Less wide sonic muscles with shorter sonic muscle fibers may enables the muscle to contract at a higher velocity in male fishes. However, females were found to have thicker sonic muscle, which indicated that the vocal ability in females may be higher than it was expected. The sonic muscle fibers of females have a larger myofibrillar region compared with males, which have a relatively larger central core. These characters may increase the fatigue-resistance of sonic muscle in males, which can contract at a relatively higher rate for a longer duration. Species with two separated swim bladders were found to be sister group in the molecular phylogenetic tree, implying that this specialized morphological character is synapomorphy. ▼ Cetaceans is a kind of marine mammals that lives by sound, which uses high-frequency echolocation click to probe the environment, as well as uses low-frequency whistle to identify different individuals for social activities. However cetacean surveys are often limited by climate and depth of the coastal water , in order to compensate for the shortage of visual observation, this study used sonobuoy acoustic system to measure the whistle of Chinese White Dolphins, to observe its appearance in time and spatial distribution, and analyze the local ocean ambient noise. Three experiments were conducted at southern end of river mouth of Tadu River in July-August 2010, sonobuoys were deployed at different depth and distance from shore. Statistics of recorded whistles show 40% of appearance every hour, the main appearance time of white dolphins were 06:00~12:00 and 16:00~24:00. The activity range of white dolphins is 13m of depth (most frequently at 5m) and within 4.4km offshore. The foraging behavior of white dolphins was inferred by means of this activity model. In terms of tidal variance, white dolphins had different preferences for tidal activities according to the distances from shore observed from the three experiments, but their whistles centered from ebb to dry tide. For the ambient noise analysis of the habitat of white dolphins, the nighttime ambient noise was noisier than the daytime, which was probably caused by frequent night fishing and fish sounds. In addition, the far-shore ambient noise was noisier than the near-shore since most of fishing operations were far away from shore. Furthermore, it was found in the ship noise experiment conducted in the Kaohsiung Harbor that the noise generated by out board boats tended to shadow the whistles of white dolphins, approximately at 3-6 kHz, more likely than the noise generated by fishing boats. Nevertheless, the influence of noise on the activities of Chinese white dolphins is still uncertain so far. It was proved in this study that underwater acoustical measurements can be employed to establish references for future long-term research on Chinese white dolphin. ▼ The ambient noise were measured on 3 SHRUs (Several Hydrophone Record Unit) of QPE (Quantifying, Predicting and Exploiting Uncertainty Initiative) Experiment in the North Mien-Hua Canyon in the summer of 2009, and 6 frequencies, which are 50, 100, 500, 1,000, 3,000 and 4,000 Hz, were analyzed in this study. NSYSU-SHRU was deployed on continental shelf at depth of 143 m by National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU), WHOI-SHRU#1 and WHOI-SHRU#2 were deployed inside and outside of Northern Mien-Hua Canyon at depth of 126 m and 337 m by Woods Hole Oceangraphic Institution (WHOI). The fluctuations of NSUSY-SHRUâs ambient noise levels can be analyzed by Fourier analysis. With the similar analysis on temperature variation, the acoustic data has shown obvious K1 and M2 tidal periods. The frequency dependence of ambient noise was also investigated, the low (50, 100 Hz) frequency components were mainly contributed from distant shipping and strumming noise, and the local wind was the dominant factor in higher (500, 1000, 2,000 and 4,000 Hz) frequencies. The result was further verified by the increased levels at higher frequency due to the typhoon Morakot during the experiment. The probability distribution of ambient noise levels was calculated at each frequency, and was found the lower frequency ambient noise levels were significantly affected by the strumming noise of mooring, and the higher frequency ambient noise levels were significantly affected by the typhoon. Finally, we also investigate the difference between inside and outside of Northern Mien-Hua Canyon by WHOI-SHRU#1 and WHOI-SHRU#2, the low (50, 100 Hz) frequency components were mainly contributed from distant shipping and the masking effect by canyon terrain, the water depth was the dominant factor in higher (500, 1000, 2,000 and 4,000 Hz) frequencies, and the noise level inside of the Northern Mien-Hua Canyon is lower than outside for 6~14 dB. ▼ Ocean ambient noise is one of factors that can affect the performance of sonar and underwater communication system, it can degrade the performance of sonar system on listening or active detection, and also can affect the quality of underwater communication. Due to the variation of temperature and density in the ocean which make ambient noise has directionality. Beamforming can analyze the directionality of noise energy. Conventional beamforming is based on the assumption of plane wave sound field, so the energy from each angle is obtained by linear accumulation of every element. However plane wave assumption may not be satisfied because of the boundary interactions of sound propagation and energy attenuation of water column, therefore conventional beamforming may have poor beam resolution and SNR in applications. This research is to study of the influence of spatial coherence of ambient noise on beam resolution, and to improve the beam resolution by using the adaptive algorithm from the communication system theory. Firstly, simulations were performed to study spatial coherence between plane wave and non-plane wave in ambient noise, and the results were compared with beam resolution. This research also analyzes the influence of different conditions of noise spatial coherence on beamforming with ASIAEX data. The results showed that ambient noise has lower spatial coherence at high frequency, and the beamforming has poor beam resolution because of the lower spatial coherence in noise. Therefore, the adaptive beamforming were performed to improve the beam resolution, and compared with the conventional beamforming. The results showed that the highest improvement on beam resolution is 42.9 %, and increased SNR by 6 dB. On the other hand, the application of ASIAEX data show that, the highest improvement on beam resolution is 40.0 %, and increased SNR by 8 dB. The noise notch of ambient noise became more significant by increasing in beam resolution, and it also promoted the accuracy of analysis on noise directionality. ▼ Kaohsiung Harbor is one of the major commercial ports in Taiwan, located at the hub of northeastern and southeastern Asia shipping lanes. Therefore there are a considerable number of commercial shipping channels distributed around Kaohsiung Harbor. The security of Kaohsiung Harbor becomes more difficult to defense than others due to the complexity of channels. In this study, Automatic Identification System (AIS) system is used to collect the ships information from June 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011. The collected AIS data were decoded, converted, corrected, integrated and analyzed systematically, which will become the base of future database. The information of the AIS includes Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI), latitude and longitude, heading, course, speed, and others. The activities of ships can be monitored by AIS, so the density and distribution of ships on each major channel can be obtained by grid computing. By the results of one-year AIS data, three major shipping channels of Kaohsiung Harbor can be identified, which are north-western, north-southern, and east-western. Based on this kind of long term shipping statistics, possible novel harbor security defense may be founded. Although the AIS was designed to monitor the ship activities, but it can be viciously shut down, or signal is out of range sometimes, then it will become the possible security breach. Nevertheless, ships at sea will generate certain kind of noises, such as from engine and propeller. With efficient propagation of sound waves in water, acoustic technology may compensate the limitations of AIS, to be a feasible method of detecting unknown ships. In this study, acoustic modeling code âAcoustic Module for Sea-surface Noiseâ (AMSN) is applied by using the ship position information from AIS, to calculate the related underwater noise sound field of Kaohsiung Harbor. Discussions were made on the dependence of noise level variation with ship density. As a conclusion, with sufficient understanding of sound field statistics of harbor, any anomaly of noise level can be an indication of hostile intrusion, thus harbor security can be further assured. ▼ In the past, the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) was mainly measured by the optical backscattering device (OBS) and water sample filtration. However, there has been a new development that user is based on the acoustics backscattering (ABS) to measure the SSC in the world. The acoustic instruments have some advantages that the optical ones do not have. For example, acoustic instruments are not effected by high turbidity, biofouling and high viscosity in the water. Acoustic instruments have high spatial and temporal resolutions. And they can immediately indicate the SSC changes than the water sample filtration method. Therefore, in this study we used the multi-frequency acoustics instrument (AQUAscat-1000) to investigate the relations of the suspended sediment size and concentration to the acoustic characteristics. The results are separated into two parts: (1) The calibration process in the flume. (2) The acoustic results in the field experiment. In the first part, we examined the range of preferred bin size with respect to the different frequencies as well as the condition in the flume, and determine that conclude the 20 mm is the best range for our case. In addition, the gain should be used when the maximum SSC is less than 100 mg/l and vice versa. Therefore, in the field case around the river mouth, the signal gain should be turned off due to high concentrations. According to the sensitivity of the backscatter intensity of different frequencies to the suspended particle sizes, multiple frequencies are needed to derive the SSC when the sediment size becomes smaller. The last point in this part is the comparison of the results between the acoustics and optical instruments. When the suspended particles in the water column are transparent, the optical measurement of the SSC is underestimated, but the acoustic method is not. The result of the field experiment in 2009 showed that the AQUAscat-1000 is a better instrument to quantify SSC than the optical instruments. The SSC increase caused by the bottom sediment re-suspension was due to the wave shear. In the 2011 experiment, although the acoustic results overestimated the SSC at some points but they still had higher relation and significance with water sample data than the optical measurements.
