▼ After the surge of Hakka movement in 1980s, Hakka identity has become a public issue. As the Commission of Hakka Affairs in every level of government was constructed and Hakka colleges were founded in several universities in the following years, the category of Hakka people has been institutionalized. But in the meantime, less and less young generation of Hakka people lost the proficiency of the Hakka dialect, which was widely seen as a crucial element of the Hakka identity. This thesis aims to explore how Hakka young generation built their ethnic identity under the paradoxical situation in which the rise of Hakka identify in the public domain has been interwoven with the loss of Hakka proficiency. The author focused on three Hakka groups, including the association of young Hakka in Meinon, the organizations of I-Min Temple (Temple of the Righteous) in Kaohsiung City, and a Hakka dialect classes held by Kaohsiung Municipal government. The author also interview with young Hakka who has no affiliation with any group. The research result found the following results. First, all of the interviewees unanimously refer patrimonial lineage as the criteria of Hakka membership. Second, different groups have different understandings of the contents of Hakka culture. The members in the association of Hakka younger generation in Meinon tend to connect the Hakka identity with local identity, while the interviewees of the organizations of I-Min Temple emphasize the religious practices. The members of the Hakka dialect classes are more responsive to the official version of Hakka identity. Those interviewees without affiliation do not have clear patter and Hakka identity is even not meaningful for many. The study shows that although the public version of Hakka identity emphasizes the diverse sources of identity, but the patrimonial lineage is perceived as the main criteria of Hakka identity. On the other hand, the official category of Hakka does not imply a unified understanding of Hakka ethnicity. This thesis shows the limitation of âgroupismâ assumption of which ethnic categories are naturally identical with social groups and social practices. Students of Hakka studies should pay more attention to the complicated relationships between ethnic categories and practices. ▼ ãNight Market is a kind of special cultural phenomena and social economic institution in Taiwan, which is seen as an important cultural performance of locals. However, with the development of tourism, night market is not only a place which provides diets for local people but for tourists in recent years; moreover, it becomes a space under the tourist gaze and represents the imaginations of global. Today, night market has many kinds of foreign foods and displays more varieties in food culture. On the basis of the theories about culture globalization and tourism, this thesis made a comparative study of two tourist night markets, Liu-Ho and Rui-Feng in Kaohsiung. Research data were collected through in-depth interviews and participant observations to investigate how these two night markets reconstructed, produced and represented their locality. ã ãI interviewed 31 voluntary interviewees including 29 vendors and 2 administrators who worked in two night markets; at the same time, I did participant observations as a consumer. After analyzing the data, the findings showed that, with its longer history, the Liu-Ho night market had been administered by the Kaohsiung city government so it had been developed to be an international tourist night market. The organization and social networks of Liu-Ho tended to emphasize its localizability, but interestingly most of its customers were international tourists. Liu-Ho represented a traditional image of Taiwan through the performance of local food culture. As a comparison, Rui-Feng had been established by private owners for twenty years. Vendors there showed high fluidity; besides, it had more local and young consumers and the dishes were more novel and exotic. Rui-Feng represented more fluid, fresh and modern traits. The study concluded that there was a need to have a new consideration, a fluid and fractal spread view of culture, to address Taiwanâs night markets. Then one could comprehend in the night markets what the various food cultures performed and how the locality had been reconstructed and produced. Media and the mobility of people were two main elements to influence the global fluidity of food culture and constructed the imagination about night market foods. In these two night markets, tourist and consumer gaze influenced the ways how a night market performed its food culture, however, different gazers had different kinds of performances. ▼ âContemporary student activistsâ are those students who involve in social movement nowadays. This article focuses on student activists and the appearance of âstudent movement organizationsâ they formed in every school/university. In this paper we present a perspective from social network and repertoires of organization theories. Refer to the book History of 1980s Taiwanese Student Movement, we compare the contemporary student movement with the movement in 80s. The method to carry out this study are quantitative survey and qualitative interview. We analyse and interpret the collected data in order to give a sketch of contemporary student activists and their own organizations. The results suggest that the openness in political environment (to student activists) and invention of Internet make the ârepertoires of organizationâ relatively open and pluralistic. The student activists now can use the âvirtual spaceâ on the internet to interact with other activists. However, the activists may only care about âforming student movement organizationsâ as a kind of ârepertoire of contentionâ, instead of their organizationâs subsistence. While the appearance of âvirtual spaceâ on the internet has lowered the threshold of interaction between activists. It doesnât equal to higher motivation of involving in movement for those normal students. The student movement organization will still face the dilemma of sustainability. Nevertheless, compare with the movement in 80s, contemporary student activists are more easily to build connections and interact with activist from other schools. But unlike the previous activists in 80s, who tried to form a national student movement network, contemporary student activists only exchange their own experience with others. And the âfactionâ still exist, but differ from the 80s, there is no conflict between those factions. ▼ From the population miracle to the globally lowest birth rate, we have witnessed the brilliant achievements made by Taiwan Family Planning but unfortunately encountered the invalid control on aging population. The Taiwan Family Planning initiated to reduce the population growth in 1960s, which had lowered the natural birth rate from 27.3â° to 11.3â° in twenty years. However, in 1990s, the fact that the achievement had been accelerated the aging population course in Taiwan obviously surfaced. Even if the low birth rate is worsened continuously, Taiwan society still shows different views on whether it should encourage fertility. Regarding what kind of policy should be used to increase the fertility rate, the final resolution has a lot to do with the outcome of political wrestling from different perspectives. The thesis divides the population policy into two stages based on the transformation of decision-making model. Firstly, it was the decision-making model dominated by technocracy before 2000, which covered two periods, namely, the Family Planning during 1960s~1990s, and the objective of population policy changed to âMaintaining Rational Population Growthâ after 1992. Secondly, it was the stage after the Party Alternation in 2000. With the support of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the establishment of democratic participation in decision-making, the delegation of Women Committee presented a new view on population and environment-friendly policy in the process of participation in population decision-making. As a result, the new population policy came into being from the confrontation of technocracy and diverse opinions. However, since the super-low birth rate in 2003, Taiwanâs fertility rate had kept plummeting and become the lowest birth rate globally in 2010. Despite the recovery of birth rate after that, it still fails to break through the super-low birth rate of 1.3; thus it implies the trouble of invalid policy. We learned from the process of confrontational wrestling that the leading partyâs preference distributes the proportion of confronters. Under the support of DDP, the Committee of Womenâs Rights Promotion seems to get the right to interpret the population policy to some extent, whose political strength was restricted with the transfer of political power. In contrast, the decision-making of KMT prefers to the traditional and conservative concepts of both marriage and fertility. As to how the population policy was generated, the elected government wishes to satisfy the majority, but many measures are terminated or half-implemented due to the restriction of funds without adequately financial support. The pronatal policy, due to the bureaucratic system and the influence of the core perception of Family Planning practiced in the past, fails to make break-through progress. ▼ The purpose of this paper is to study underground Mark Six, which is among the most popular activities in Taiwan. Although it involves complicated financial transaction and lots of people, the deriving debt has no legal status according to principle âthe gamble debt is illegalâ proscribed in Taiwanese civil law. This thesis focuses on how this system operates without the assurance of the legal system, which is widely believed as the foundation of modern property right. This Data were collected by in-depth interview and participant observation, including 23 interviewers in three main roles and other related actors, gamblers, brokers, bankers, and then, observing the transaction details of underground Mark Six in the illegal casino to analyze the issue specifically. This study identities three major mechanisms that maintain the operation of underground Mark Six: social Network, violence and risk Management. First, the definition of Social network is the relationship construction under the illegal Mark Six transaction. Trust and reputation, derived from the social network, protect transaction safety as a normative force. Next, the mechanism of violence is the transaction progress which judges in underworld way. Also, the mechanism of violence has the technique of evasion of law. Third, the mechanism of risk management is by different layers' actors to work on, and therefore, these actors cause the variation of transaction rule, method and restriction. In order to avoid debt quarrel, for instance, gamblers in lower layer usually decrease the risks by separating the creditor's right to different uplinks.For the brokers in the middle layer, they use a specific transaction record to insure the transaction execution. What's more is that the bankers in the top layer would control the signed Mark Six number for some specific number to prevent a horrible âHot Packâ result. I also find that recently Underground Mark Six is toward network technology, gathering with the traditional manual operation. These two executions so called âComputer Operationâ and âPaper Operation.â Computer operation, moreover, is toward to be an institutionalization franchise, leading the Underground Mark Six to a technology operation, especially for account and managing risk. ▼ An organizationâs behaviors and decisions in a highly regulative institutional industry were not only regulated by regulations and norms but also influenced by the indigenous institutional logics, such as those originally derived from the state, the profession, the family or the religion. Private universities in Taiwan need to compete to seize the legitimacy as well as the resources in the highly competitive and regulative education environment. Government rules and professional norms provide the possible sources of isomorphism on those public and private universities in this education environment; however, the indigenous institutional logics of private universities will demonstrate the heterogeneities on their strategies choices. According to the founding backgrounds and initiative resources, private universities in Taiwan can be classified into two types: those controlled by family or family business groups and those founded by religious organizations. Given that these universities guild by two different institutional logics, i.e., family logic and religion logic, this research argues that the different private universities that guild by the distinctive institutional logics will possibly have specific strategies choices in the highly regulated and competitive education environment. This research employs institutional logics perspective and social capital theory to address the academia-industry collaborations (AIC) strategy issue in Taiwan and are interested to know how the indigenous institutional logics in each private university may co-act with the universityâs social capital and thereby influences its inclination and strategic choices on AIC strategy. This research argues that no matter what kind of private university, the social capital of the university President and the Chairman of the Board, and the relational pluralism of the Board of Directors, will play significantly positive impact on AIC strategy. The findings indicate that the social capital of the President and the heterogeneity of the Board of Directors will generate greater significantly positive impacts on AIC strategy in family-controlled universities than in religion-founded universities. Moreover, the social capital of the Chairman, Chairmanâs identity which is tied to founding organizations, and the control asymmetry of the Board of Directors in religion-founded universities may indicate greater positive impact on AIC strategy than in family-controlled universities. This research concludes that even private universities that are embedded in a highly regulative and competitive environment, these private universities still have distinctive strategic choice based on its indigenous institutional logics and the following attentional social ties. . The family-controlled private universities prefer to utilize the social capital of President and heterogeneity of the Board of Directors as resources on the strategies.
