Two different kinds of low-profile open-slot antenna to achieve a low profile of 7 and 5 mm, respectively, to cover the LTE operation (698~960/1710~2690 MHz) in the smartphone, especially the metal-casing smartphone, are demonstrated. The first antenna which shows a low profile of 7 mm to the top or bottom edge is a low-profile slot antenna that can be integrated with the USB connector. In this design, the antenna consists of one longer inverted-L (IL) open slot and one shorter IL open slot and is excited by the first and second feeds, respectively, to generate the fundamental (0.25-wavelength) resonant modes at the low and high bands. By adding wideband matching circuits in the first and second feeds, the antenna can provide two wide operating bands covering the 698~960 MHz and 1710~2690 MHz bands. The second antenna which has a very low profile of 5 mm uses one IL slot with two open ends as the main structure, with a distributed inductor and a chip capacitor embedded therein. The embedded circuit elements can passively reconfigure the resonant slot paths of the IL slot to generate multiple slot resonant modes in the low and high bands. In this case, the first antenna structure can be simplified from two IL open slots to only one IL open slot and also cover the desired LTE bands with the aid of the wideband matching circuit. Finally, two antennas of the first or second design are placed respectively at the top and bottom edges of the system ground plane for the 2 2 LTE MIMO operation. Novel designs of planar antennas including the feed network for improving the antenna performance improvement (CP axial-ratio bandwidth, XPL, port decoupling for dual-polarized operation, and harmonic control) or achieving dual-band operation are presented. This thesis, comprises five sections. Firstly, for obtaining broadband CP designs, the Wilkinson power divider and branch-line coupler are used. The 3-dB axial ratio CP bandwidths of all proposed antennas are larger than 30%. Secondly, the dual broadband patch antennas including a stopband network are proposed. Thirdly, the dual-polarized patch antenna with high XPL and isolation between two ports by using a Wilkinson power divider with a 180° phase shift between its two ports is proposed. Fourthly, the dual-band and dual-polarized patch antenna suitable for base-station antenna applications for mobile communications systems is studied. Finally, the harmonic control study of a square microstrip antenna is presented. Advisors/Committee Members: W. S.
