1. Li, Hai-ling. none.

Degree: Master, Political Science, 2008, NSYSU

The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between the variables of the personal and social background and ethnic identity, party identification, evaluation to the candidates, and election issues of the voters and their voting choice in Taipei Mayor Election of 2006. The study uses the information of the large interview, which comes from a four-year-research(2005-2008) of `Taiwan Election and Democratization` held by professor Ji Huang and released by the Election Research Center of National Cheng-Chi University, of 2006 Taipei and Kaohsiung Mayor Elections. Through the research and analysis, the study hopes to establish the voting model of Taipei voters and be a reference and supplement for future researches. First of all, by viewing the relationship between personal and social background of the voters and the four intermediary variables (ethnic identity, party identification, evaluation of candidates, and the election issues), we found that there is highly interpretative ability between provincial and the four intermediary variables. And the genders, ages, and education level have considerable interpretative ability, but the home income doesnât. Secondly, from the relationship among the four intermediary variables and the voting tendency, the study also found that the four variables intermediary variables have considerable high interpretation ability to interpret the voting tendency of Taipei voters, and ethnic identity and political parties are the most. Finally, the study analysis the voters personal and social background together with the four intermediaries and found that the two intermediary variables of ethnic identity and political parties are more significant to influence the voting tendency of voters. Therefore, the four intermediary variables which the study used are very good research variables, and they can be continually used to research the voting behavior of Taipei voters in the future. 2. Lai, Chi-Lu. A Contrast between Montesquieuâs and Quesnayâs Thoughts of China Despotism â A Methodological Reflection.

Degree: PhD, Political Science, 2010, NSYSU

This dissertation aims to contrast the differences between Montesquieuâs and Quesnayâs thoughts of China Despotism theory, to analyze the methodology and epistemology used by the two scholars to demonstrate and observe traditional China despotism, and, to expound and examine the description of traditional China despotism in Montesquieuâs and Quesnayâs thoughts. Montesquieu was a rare one among Enlightenment philosophers who profoundly discussed China Despotism in the eighteenth century. In the elaboration of Montesquieuâs China Despotism, there were lots of contradictions in De L'espirt Des Lois. Traditional China government was depreciated by him. From the empirical induce methodology, positivism epistemology and ontologyâs point of view, this dissertation tries to deeply analyze and research Montesquieuâs China Despotism. At the time, there were also some Enlightenment Philosophers who have a different view of China Despotism. The representative was a Physiocrat â Francois Quesnay. In his Le Despotisme De La Chine, he marked traditional China government positively. Quesnay, who developed his view based on the same empirical facts about traditional China according to the eighteenth centuryâs Jesuits, travelers and businessmen and with the same natural science methodology, had totally different views and thoughts about China Despotism from Montesquieu. This dissertation has a detailed study and review on these differences. Questions will be explored in this dissertation are as below. Did the natural science methodology and epistemology of Montesquieuâs and Quesnayâs China Despotism strengthen the judgment of how they valued traditional China government? Were there pre-judgments in their so-called neutral and objective denouncement about the way they researched China Despotism in the empirical induce methodology and epistemology? Were Montesquieuâs and Quesnayâs judgments about China Depotism enhanced by the natural science methodology and epistemology a kind of western centralism? Did they, in the name of neutral and objective empirical induce methodology and epistemology that could not reason non-western value, refuse and devaluate other non-western value? This dissertation has a deeply reflection on these from the âparadigmâ and âincommensurableâ methodological concepts of Thomas S. Kuhnâs. If Montesquieuâs China Despotism was the main point of western culture, was the way Quesnay observed traditional China government presenting a different value in the west culture and there were still some admiring this kind of value? Was this kind of evaluation neglected by recent Chinese intellects? This is a serious problem worthy of reconsideration and reflection. 3. Shu, Mei-Li. A Study on the Law-related Cognition of Taiwan Local Elites.

Degree: Master, Political Science, 2007, NSYSU

Local elites are usually the controller of local powers, especially for those local political elites who can make an authoritative allotment for social values and also have a certain influence on the decision-making process of public policies. Even though Taiwan has experienced political democratization and liberalization and most of political, economic and social systems and structures imitate the West, it is worthy of further observations if the law-related cognition, the most important for democracy, has been established, if the concept of Confucianism is still deeply rooted in the mind of citizenry, if parts of Confucianism are preserved and the concept of law-related cognition is existed, and what kind of influence it will have on current political developments. This research is designed to study the relation between the personal characteristics and the values of democracy (the concepts of conflict, local authority limit, honest, minority benefit and political participation) and the relation between the concept of Confucian culture and the law-related cognition. This research assumed the law-related cognition of local elites shall depend on the relation between such concepts and law-related cognitions. This research finds that the relations between the democratic values of local elites and the personal factors are not really all existed. For the democratic values and the Confucian culture concept of local elites, the educational background of local elites and the level of interviewees are most important and their party supports, ages and statuses are second. Those local elites with different characteristics have significant differences in their values of democracy and concepts of Confucian culture, which is from the viewpoint of Micro. This research also finds that the democratic values of local elites appear negative correlation between: 1. the concept of conflict and the concept of local authority limit; 2. the concept of local authority limit & the concept of honest and the concept of political participation & the law-related cognition respectively; 3. the concept of minority benefit and the concept of political participation; and 4. the law-related cognition and the concept of Confucian culture; but present lower positive correlation between: 1. the law-related cognition, the concept of conflict and the concept of political participation, 2. the concept of local authority limit, the concept of minority benefit and the concept of Confucian culture. In future, we can make further operations to build a more perfect model with the style of scales. The whole model shows that the limit of central and local authorities, the concept of political participation and the concept of Confucian culture are commonly significant parts in these three models. The model will not reduce its significance because of increasing variables. The age is also significant for the anticipation of local elites but the educational background is not, which is possible because the interviewee with higher education attainments tends to be… Advisors/Committee Members: Chien-Wen Peng (chair), Wen-Chun Chen (committee member), Yi-Jen Tseng (chair).
