▼ The genus Carex L. (Cyperaceae) contains three subgenera, more than 70 sections, and 1500â2500 species in the world. In Taiwan, it includes about 60 species, 3 subgenera, and 26 sections. Identification of the taxa of the genus is relatively difficult, because its reproductive and sexual organs are reduced, and many species are morphologically in similarity. It is therefore necessary to clarify the variation ranges of characters and correct scientific name of each species. This study excludes the section of Praecoces of the subgenus Carex, because it was taxonomically treated 13 years ago. My attempt in this study is to employ macro-morphological characters to solve taxonomic problems for those species in Taiwan. In addition, anatomical characters are also applied in order to explore their possibilities applicable to the whole genus. Five anatomical characters, including outline shapes of leaf transverse section, shape of adaxial ribs, shape of air-cavities, and numbers of lateral veins, numbers and shape of bulliform cells, were used. Because of lack of fresh materials, only 4 species consisting of C. cruciate, C. filicina, C. rafflesiana and C. satsumensis in the genus Carex have been observed. Those anatomic characters are verified useful. In this study, taxonomic treatment of 39 taxa (38 species and 1 variety) have been made, except those the section Praecoces. In the treatments, three species, C. caucasia Steven, C. subfilicinoides KÃ¼kenthal, C. longistipes Hayata were treated as synonym of C. atrata L., C. filicina Nees, C. fulvorubescens Hayata, respectively; five species, C. fulvorubescens, C. liui Koyama & Chuang, C. morii Hayata, C. purpureotincta Ohwi and C. urelytra Ohwi, were confirmed endemic to Taiwan. The color pictures, line drawings, and distribution maps for 39 taxa were provided. ▼ Daphniphyllaceae is a monogeneric family with a main distributional range from tropical to subtropical South East or East Asia. Totally, Daphniphyllum consists of about 30 species in the world. Only a few morphological characters can be used because of the reduced reproductive organs and the variable leaves, which has led to difficulties in intrageneric classification and species identification. To find out more good and diagnostic characters for the delineation of species in the family becomes important and necessary. The dispute concerning the phylogeny of the family is always present since it was established. The families Euphorbiaceae, Buxaceae, Pittosporaceae, Hamamelidaceae, Cercidiphyllaceae, Paeoniaceae and Peridiscaceae have been separately considered as most closely related family by many authors. The characters which the authors used for analysis included floral structure, pollen morphology, wood anatomy and DNA sequence. However, those micro-morphologies of leaf anatomy and epidermal characteristics which may provide detailed information have been seldom evidenced. This study attempts to utilize the molecular evidences (nrITS, psbA-trnH spacer, trnL intron of chloroplast DNA) for phylogenetic analysis and to evaluate the comparative morphological characters of leaves in identification of species for taxonomy. The results of molecular analysis reveal that Daphniphyllaceae is monophyletic and close relationship with Cercidiphyllaceae or Hamamelidaceae. The phylogenetic relationship among the species and the sister group of Daphniphyllaceac have not yet been resolved. The results of morphology and anatomy show that the main characters for taxonomy were female flowers and leaf venation. The features of leaf epidermis, fruit or leaf scar are helpful in distinguishing taxa. Totally, 28 species and 4 varieties are here recognized in the genus. ▼ Taiwan is an island surrounded by sea. Due to the topography, the coastal wetlands distribute almost around the west seashore, and some at the estuary of the east seashore. The coastal wetland is a transitional area between territory ecosystem and marine ecosystem. The environment of the coastal wetland is influenced by tide and season, thus the distribution of vegetations here exhibits a dynamic equilibrium. This study attempts to investigate the distribution and composition of the vegetation and the appearance of the habitat environment at the coastal wetland of Taiwan. According to the results, 173 species belonging to 50 families have been recorded. This indicates that the diversity of the marsh vegetation at the coastal wetland is low. Most of the species belong to Gramineae, Compositae and Cyperaceae. Paspalum vaginatum and Phragmites karka are the most dominant plant at coastal marsh environments. According to the results of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and cluster analysis (CA), 16 vegetation types including one subtype and one transitional type are classified. The habitats of these vegetation types can be classified into five types, namely tidal fresh water marsh, fresh water-salt marsh, wet meadow, salt marsh and submerged environment. Most of these vegetation types have only one major dominant species. The distribution of the marsh vegetation features a belting pattern, which is mainly limited by the maximum of their salt tolerance from coastal toward inland, or estuary toward headwaters. Subsequently, it can by influenced by soil moisture and pH value. Furthermore, the vegetations are influenced by many additional environmental factors, resulting in a mosaic distribution of vegetation types. The marsh vegetation is processing at an unstable and developing period. Because the coastal wetland is seriously disturbed by human activities, the environmental variation becomes greater. Therefore, the transitional vegetations were observed frequently. Finally, the development pressure due to economic demand is the major cause that makes coastal wetland disappeared. It is urgently needed to protect this sensitive natural resource. ▼ Abstract Patterns of plant species composition and their relationships to environmental factors were investigated in Jhuokou River basin. 102, 20 Ã 20 m plots with woody stems â§1.0 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) data and 12 environmental variables were analysed by Two Way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN), Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA) and Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) to classify the vegetation types and determine the significant environmental variables that affect the distribution of vegetation. Classification and regression tree (CART) were then used to perform vegetation classification tree based on these significant variables. The vegetation classification result showed that 102 sampling plots can be classified into 9 vegetation types : 1. Daphniphyllum hlaucescens subsp. oldhamii - Cyclobalanopsis morii vegetation type ; 2. Neolitsea acuminatissima - Cyclobalanopsis morii vegetation type ; 3. Adinandra formosana - Lithocarpus lepidocarpus - Machilus thunbergii vegetation type ; 4. Elaeocarpus japonicus - Castanopsis cuspidate - Machilus thunbergii vegetation type ; 5. Ardisia quinquegona - Tricalysia dubia - Beilschmiedia erythrophloia vegetation type ; 6. Schefflera octophylla - Helicia formosana - Beilschmiedia erythrophloia vegetation type ; 7. Castanopsis formosana - Mallotus paniculatus - Schefflera octophylla vegetation type ; 8. Cyclobalanopsis glauca - Glochidion rubrum - Sapindus mukorossii vegetation type ; 9. Champereia manillana - Kleinhovia hospita - Murraya vegetation type. DCA and CCA distinguished 8 significant environmental variables from 12 measured variables. Altitude and warmth index were the most important variables in 8 significant environmental variables, but were highly correlated. When used vegetation classification tree to predict the position of the reference vegetation alliance, average accuracy was 56.9 %. The results indicated that the current data was still insufficient to predict the vegetation type at alliances level with environmental variables.
