▼ The advantages that a side-scan sonar can offer include large-scale survey areas and high-resolution imagery which can provide the detection and positioning of underwater targets effectively. The purpose of image analysis, classification and positioning in this research was presented by the development of an automated recognition and classification system based on sonographs collected off Kenting area. Major components of the system include gray level co-occurrence matrix method, Baysian classification and cluster analysis. The sonograph classified by the automated recognition and classification system was split into two stages. The first stage divided the seafloor into three categories: (1) Rocky seafloor. (2) Sandy seafloor. (3) Acoustic shadow seafloor. Based on the characteristics of the rocky seafloor, the rocky seafloor was subdivided into five types in the second stage: (1) Flank reef and small independent reef. (2) Smooth reef. (3) Small coral on reef. (4) Coral on independent reef. (5) Large coral on reef. Analysis and proof of the system was conducted by underwater photographs collected off Kenting area in August 4, to 6, 2004. The identification accuracy of the first stage can reach 93% in Shiniuzai area. The characteristic features selected in this research (i.e., entropy and homogeneity) for the classification of various coral reef seafloors was proved adequate and the results was described in map within a Geographic Information System in the second stage. The results of this research illustrated that the rocky area identified in Shiniuzai was 98,863 m2. Due to image resolution restrictions, only 62,199 m2 of the total rocky area could be defined and classified properly. Among them, the flank reef and small independent reef covered an area of 15,954 m2 (26.3%); the smooth reef covered 3,133 m2 (5.0%); the small coral on reef covered 8,021 m2 (12.8%); the coral on independent reef covered 25,504 m2 (40.7%) and the large coral on reef covered 9,587 m2 (15.3%). ▼ This study is to develop a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank used to investigate the wave-induced dynamic properties of a dual pontoon floating structure (DPFS) with a liquid container on the top. The nonlinear numerical wave tank, developed based on the velocity potential function and the boundary element method (BEM), is to simulate dynamic properties including sway, heave, roll, and tension response. In addition, a physical model of the dual floating pontoon is tested in a hydrodynamic wave tank to validate the numerical model for simulation of wave and structure interaction. In the numerical model, a boundary integral equation method (BIEM) with linear element scheme is applied to establish a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT). The nonlinear free surface condition is treated by combining the Mixed Eulerian and Lagrangian method (MEL), the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method (RK4) and a cubic spline scheme. The second-order Stokes wave theory is used to generate the velocity flux on the input boundary. Numerical damping zones are deployed at both ends of the NWT to dissipate or absorb the transmitted and reflected waves. Acceleration potential method and modal decomposition method are adopted to solve the unsteady potential functions Î¦1,t and Î¦2,t, while the system of motion equation is established according to Newton's 2nd law. Finally, the RK4 is applied to predict the motion of the platform, and the variation of free surface. As for the hydrodynamic laboratory model test, an image process scheme is applied to trace the floating structure motion and the variation of water surface inside the sloshing tank, while the mooring tension is measured by a load cell and stored in a data logger. The comparisons of numerical simulations and experimental data indicate that the numerical predictions are larger than measurements especially near the resonance frequency. This discrepancy is probably due to the fluid viscous effect. To overcome this problem and maintain the calculation efficiency, an uncoupled damping coefficient obtained through a damping ratio (Î¶=C/Ccr=0.02) is incorporated into the vibration system. Results reveal that responses of body motion near the resonant frequencies of each mode have significantly reduced and close to the measurements. Therefore, the suitable value of the damping ratio for the floating platform is Î¶=0.02. Then the numerical model with a damping ratio is applied to investigate the dynamic properties of the floating platform for different arrangements, including different mooring angle, spring constant, spacing, and the liquid container. Results demonstrate that the resonant frequency of each mode, responses of body motion and mooring tensions change along with the settings. As a whole, the platform with smaller mooring angle, longer spacing between the pontoons, higher water depth and wider width of the liquid container has relatively stable body motions and less mooring tension. ▼ Compared to terrestrial plants algae with high productivity characteristics, they are optimistically considered as a potential candidate to be biomass fuels. Based on the solar energy point of view, this study is to investigate the path of energy absorption by the microalgae vertical photobioreactor at outdoor culture, and establishes a numerical model to estimate the average received seasonal light intensity and the optimal arrangement for a set of vertical photobioreactors at open field. Taking Kaohsiung as an example, the projected daily Solar altitude, Solar azimuth and Solar radiation, coupled with the loss of Snell's law and Fresnel equation is used to obtain the actual light intensity penetrating into the wall of container. The light attenuation in the culture medium is estimated according to Bill Lambert law. This study also established a model to explore the shadow effect created by other nearby photobioreactors when a large scale production of microalgae implemented. The results are as followings: The vertical photobioreactor reflection losses throughout the year averaged about 10.9%; during spring and autumn it captures the largest amount of solar radiation, then winter, and summer is minimum, since during summer time the sun is moving upright overhead causing the light reflects more and less penetrates into the container. Taking diameter 50 cm vertical photobioreactor for example, the average light intensity in the medium of algae in about 500 (Î¼molâm-2âs-1), while the winter solstice day average light intensity algae solution changes at least, the greatest change in the summer solstice. The shadow effect study shows that the arrangement of the east-west direction spacing has more impact than north-south, and their EW gap of spacing between each barrel should be at least 80% height, while NS direction could be moderately reduced. ▼ In the past, human activities usually rely on the fossil fuel to provide the energy for the mechanical operations or industries development. In recent years, the trend of gradually diminishing fossil fuel has sparked the unstable social economic problems for some countries relying on imported energy, and also the overuse of these traditional fuel directly increase the severity of greenhouse effect and other issues of environment pollution. Worsen by those serious pollution issues, many countries are engaging in searching for renewable energy resources to replace some amount of fossil fuel. Taiwan, located at the western rim of the Pacific Ocean, has imported 98% of energy for consumption. According to a previous survey, this island state is rich in wave and ocean current energy waiting for exploring, especially the Kuroshio Current which passes along the east coast of Taiwan and provides a steady and northward current. Harnessing this kind of ocean energy becomes one of the options to reach the goal of energy self-independence. In addition to reducing carbon dioxide emission from burning fossil fuel, it may slow down the greenhouse gas effect and thus mitigate global warming problems. However, the depth of eastern sea of Taiwan is usually over 500 meters deep, and the maximum depth can get as deep as 3000 meters. The constructions could be extremely difficult for such water depth by using the pile foundation for the power generation system, so selecting a floating platform with a single-point-mooring (SPM) system may becpme the only choice to overcome the deep water problem. This research is the pre-phase for the Kuroshio Current generation system, and the goal is to design a set of SPM generation system based on the submarine topography and sea conditions near the Penghu Bay Bridge. To increase the safety and reliability of a floating structure, it is necessary to analysis the forces and hydrodynamic properties of the structure including the motions of the single-point-mooring floating platform and the mooring tensions under environmental loadings. This study consists of two parts: numerical simulation and physical modeling. In numerical simulation, a lumped mass method with a Morison type of relative motion equation are applied to calculate the drag and inertial forces on the system components and then are equally divided to the associated nodes to form a system of motion equations based on Newtonâs second law. Through the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method, the dynamic performance of the floating platform can be obtained. To verify the numerical model, a hydrodynamic experiment was carried out in a wave tank (35x1x1.2 m), and the result of the platform motions shows that both numerical predictions and measurements of modeling have good agreement, though the maximum mooring tension indicates that the numerical predictions are slightly higher than that of physical model. It demonstrates that the present numerical model is reliable and useful for practical applications. ▼ This investigation was focused on exploring the sea floor at Sizihwan near-shore area, College of Marine Sciences, National Sun Yat-sen University, by the application of a mechanically scanned imaging sonar system. Acoustic images at seven stations with multiple slant ranges and repeatative acquisitions were collected in order to satisfy the underwater stationary target identification processes, which include image quality, area coverage, image resolution and scanning aspect. At each station, a total of six different slant range settings were selected which ranged from 5m to 25m and eight consecutive images were acquired at each range setting. Basic procedures for image processing include aspect correction, stacking, mosaicking, object identification and recognition, object characteristics quantification and object height estimation. Thirty proud concrete objects were identified at the investigation site which distributed in the north-east to south-west direction by an area of 25 x 9m. The height of most objects are over 40cm and the rest are within the range of 10 to 20cm. Based on these information, these objects were identified as Link armor blocks of 5 tonnage and the actual dimensions of these blocks was 2.1m x 2.3m with 1.9m in height. Engineering behavior evaluation regarding penetration depth of these objects indicated that two types of penetration mechanisms were involved, i.e., subsidence caused by bearing capacity and scouring of sediments and bury caused by beach nourishment. Penetration depth caused by subsidence is ranged mainly from 90cm to a maximum of 130cm. Penetration caused by bury is 50cm for all of the objects. The magnitude of penetration caused by subsidence is twice larger than that cased by bury. Purpose and function of these objects were concluded to be a submerged groin deployed for the protection of a nearby sea-wall. This investigation concluded that the abnormal piling conditions of some blocks observed at this site was caused by the procedure during block deployment which involved the distance and aspect between blocks. An in-situ and real-time underwater observation system such as the one employed at this investigation (i.e., a scanning sonar system) could be employed to prevent this type of abnormal piling conditions and to improve the quality of underwater construction activity. ▼ Disaster or accident happened in or related to the aquatic environment is much more difficulty and dangerous to the rescuers as compared to those happened in the terrestrial environment. In this circumstance, detection, location and salvage the victims under the water or on the water bottom are the major challenges faced by the rescuers. An efficient and reliable way of detecting and locating the victims is therefore a major component of the operation. After the TransAsia Airways flight GE235 plane crash landed in Keelung River in February, 2015 (codenamed Nan-Kong Aviation Accident), 12 people were missing and were expected to have been pulled down the river. After exhausted searching operation by divers but in vain, the potential location of the 3 still missing people were seriously re-examined. It was concluded that the Nan-Hu bridge area is one of the most potential areas and a comprehensive underwater acoustic investigation of this specific area was recommended. A bottom fixed mechanically scanned imaging sonar was therefore employed for this specific searching for operation. Based on underwater acoustic images collected, underwater environment and topographic features of the Nan-Hu bridge area can be divided into six distinctive regions, in a sequence from upstream to downstream, i.e., flow channel region, upstream region, submerged dike region, depositional region, erosion region, and downstream region. Based on outer appearance, composition and dimensions, a total of 25 potential or unidentified targets were recognized in the high resolution acoustic images. The 25 potential targets positioned in Nan-Hu bridge area were further identified and proved individually by divers. In this case, two of the 3 unaccounted personnel were located at the submerged dike region. All the other potential targets were proved to be either concrete blocks or logs. In addition, it was also concluded that the last unaccounted personnel was not located in this specific bridge area. From a time series point of view, the dates that the unaccounted personnel were detected and salvaged in this accident could be grouped into two categories. At flat and muddy bottom regions, searching for operations by divers could be completed effectively and comprehensively in a short period of time. However, prominent technical limitations existed for locating those missing personnel by divers at the rugged regions which might detain the progress of the whole searching for operation. ▼ Floating structures are widely used in marine engineering, for example, wave absorption facilities for the protection of the coast, offshore platforms for the exploitation of marine resources, the sea cages platform for aquaculture. How to design stable floating structures to capture marine energy has become one of the main interests in ocean engineering. This study is to investigate the liquid oscillatory phenomenon inside the tuned liquid column damper (TLCD) and the dynamic behaviors of its floating platform under regular waves conditions. The nonlinear numerical wave tank, developed based on the velocity potential function and the boundary element method (BEM), is used to simulate dynamic properties including surge, heave, pitch, and tension responses. In addition, a physical model of the floating platform with a TLCD was tested in a hydrodynamic wave tank to validate a 2-D numerical model for simulation of wave- structure interaction. The experimental results indicate that when the incident wave frequency near the natural frequency of the TLCD, fluid in the TLCD column would oscillate vigorously but other motions such as surge, pitch and heave will be suppressed. The comparisons of numerical simulations and experimental data indicate that the numerical predictions are larger than measurements especially at frequencies near to the resonant frequency. This discrepancy is probably due to the fluid viscous effect. To overcome this problem, an uncoupled damping ratio (Î¶) is adopted and incorporated into the vibration system. The results showed that when damping ratio Î¶=0.06 the responses of body motion near the resonant frequency have significantly reduced and matched to the measurements. The results of the liquid column oscillation in TLCD reveal that the increase of effective length of liquid column (Le), the resonant frequency of TLCD would move downward. The peak value of the amplitude ratio (A2/A1) would increase as the length of the horizontal column (b), the cross-sectional area of the vertical column (Av), the cross-sectional area of the horizontal column (Ah), and the ratio of the cross-sectional areas (Av/ Ah) were reduced. ▼ In this thesis, the turbine blade design eligible for ocean current conditions is proposed using blade element momentum theory. in the beginning, the performance of water turbines is evaluated by CFD (computational fluid dynamics) package code, so as to design the suitable turbine under various conditions. The blade design encompasses parameters of the hydrofoil selection and blade shape which affect the turbine performance. Shortly following the investigation of the aforementioned parameters, the turbineâs performance with radius of two meter is also studied. The current conditions include the yaw and the pitch angle of the turbine relative to the current flow direction, as well as the periodic flow conditions on the performance of the water turbine. Lastly, the electricity generation is estimated by the present device. The results show that hydrofoils with less changes in the angle of attack with respect to the lift-drag ratio help enhance the turbineâs performance. The feedback mechanism is added to the blade design procedure to make sure that the turbine design caters to the best angle of attack. A turbine with two-meter radius can garner 34% of the sea current energy at most, living up to the project goal of exceeding the efficiency of 30%. The simulated test indicates that the adequate enlargement of the blade not only sustains the maximal efficiency, but it also lowers the stress imposed on the blade. Given the ocean current conditions, it is also shown that the turbineâs efficiency is proportional to the cubic cosine incident angle of inflow velocity alongside with the enlargement of the turbine radius. When it comes to the current electricity generation, from the in-situ measurement data, the current maximal velocity near the sea region is around 1.3 m/s. If incorporated with the self excited induction generator with the efficiency of 55%, a one-meter-radius turbine is estimated to be able to generate 530W at most, while a two-meter-radius turbine is estimated to generate 2.5KW. However, the use of the permanent magnet generator can produce 45% more electricity than a self excited induction generator. ▼ This paper is to study the scattering problem and radiation problem between incident wave and a moored dual pontoon platform by using both a fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT) and a physical tank. The nonlinear numerical wave tank is developed based on the velocity potential function and the boundary element method (BEM). In addition, a moored dual floating pontoon physical model is tested in an experimental wave tank to validate the numerical model for simulation of wave and structure interaction including mooring tension, structure translation and rotation. The phenomena of wave reflection and transmission due to a floating platform are also considered in the study. The experimential results indicate that the platform surge-RAO decays as the wave frequency increases. Similarly, the platform heave-RAO decays first until at the vicinity of the resonance frequency happening where the vertical amplitude rises up and then decays again. The tension-RAO has two resonance frequencies, the lower resonance is resulted by the surge montion, while the higer resonance is caused by the heave motion. Both wave reflection and transmission coefficients decrease near the heave resonance frequency. This indicates that the platform has the best performance in wave shelter effect at heave resonance to protect costal zone. In general, the comparisons of the numerical simulations and experimental results indicate the numerical horizontal motion have a good agreement, but for the vertical motion, the numerical predictions are larger than experiments especially near the heave resonance frequency. This may be due to the structure vertical velocity increases dramatically causing flow separation occurred below the structure sharp corner, thus the fluid viscous damping effect may play an important role in heave motion. ▼ Nannochloropsis oculata is one of promising oleaginous microalga, containing a plenty of fat which can be extracted and transformed into biodiesel. The purpose of this study is to develop a closed system, Outdoor Temperature Controllable Photobioreactor System (OTCPS), to cultivate the algae in pure and massive quantity. In this research, the seawater from Sizihwan is used as the cultivation liquid. Lambert-Beerâs Law is adopted to calculate the attenuation coefficient of light intensity in a water column. By adjusting the water depth, not only the light intensity but also the water temperature could be controlled at the optimal situation and thus avoids unfavorable temperature changing in harsh weather. Therefore to establish the relationship of light intensity and water temperature is critical for the success of growing microalgae in outdoor conditions. The temperature variation of culture medium can be explained by the heat transfer theorem. In this study, the heat radiation mechanism and the first order of Fourier heat conductivity were adopted to simulate the liquid temperature change. The simulation results have shown good agreement with the filed data especially during daytime. The experimental results reveal that the winter grow rate of Nannochloroposis oculata is 0.33 d-1 , while the summer growth rate is only 0.20 d-1 . This may imply that the high temperature is an inhibition to the growth of Nannochloroposis oculata. Besides when the cell density of microalgae is getting higher, each individual alga may create mutual shading effect and thus reduce the photosynthetic efficiency. In conclusion, the proposed photobioreactor has been successfully tested in summer, autumn, and winter at Kaohsiung, in the south of Taiwan. ▼ This paper is to investigate the wave-induced dynamic properties of the floating platform for cage aquaculture. Considering the calculation efficiency and its applicability, this problem is simplified by: (1) assuming the flow field is inviscid, incompressible and irrotational; (2) the form drag and inertia drag on the fish net is calculated by the modified Morison equation (or Morison type equation of relative motion), including the material and geometric properties; (3) the moorings is treated as a symmetric linear spring system and the influence of hydrodynamic forces on the mooring lines is neglected; and (4) the net-volume is assumed as un-deformable to avoid the inversely prolonging computing time because the mass of fish net with is too light comparing with the mass of floating platform and cause the marching time step tremendously small to reach the steady-state condition which may lead to larger numerical errors (e.g. truncation errors) in computation. The BIEM with linear element scheme is applied to establish a 2D fully nonlinear numerical wave tank (NWT). The nonlinear free surface condition is treated by combining the Mixed Eulerian and Lagrangian method (MEL), the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method (RK4) and the cubic spline scheme. The second-order Stokes wave theory is adopted to give the velocity on the input boundary. Numerical damping zones are deployed at both ends of the NWT to dissipate or absorb the transmitted and reflected wave energy. The velocity and acceleration fields should be solved simultaneously in order to obtain the wave-induced dynamic property of the floating platform. Thus, both the acceleration potential method and modal decomposition method are adopted to solve the wave forces on the floating body, while the wave forces on the fish net are calculated by the modified Morison equation. According to Newtonâs second law, the total forces on the gravity center of the floating platform form the equation of motion. Finally, the RK4 is applied to predict the displacement and velocity of the platform. Firstly, the NWT is validated by comparing the wave elevation, internal velocity and acceleration with those from the second-order Stokes wave theory. Moreover, the numerical damping zone is suitable for long time simulation with a wide range of wave depth. The simulated results on wave-body interactions of fixed or freely floating body also indicate good agreement with those of other published results. Secondly, in the case of the interaction of waves and the floating platform, the simulated results show well agreement with experimental data, except at the vicinity of resonant frequency of roll and heave motions. This discrepancy is due to the fluid viscous effect. To overcome this problem and maintain the calculation efficiency, an uncoupled damping coefficient obtained by a damping ratio (Î¾=0.1 ) is incorporated into the vibration system.
