The Soviet Union of the 1950s and 1960s existed in a transitional state, emerging recently from postwar reconstruction and on a path toward increasing urbanity, consumer provisioning, and technological might. Modernizing rhetoric emphasized not only these spatial and material transformations, but also the promise of full-fledged communism's looming arrival. This transformational ethos necessitated a renewal of direct attempts to remold humanity. Gender equality – or, at the very least, removing bourgeois strictures on women – remained a partially unfulfilled promise. Technological advances and the development of Soviet industrial capacity offered a new means of profoundly altering the lives of Soviet men and women. As other scholars have noted, Soviet women were the most obvious targets of these campaigns, but they were not alone in these projects. This dissertation argues that the Soviet state also directed intensive campaigns to remodel male consumptive and bodily practices in order to rid them of politically and socially destructive tendencies, making them fit for the modern socialist civilization under construction. Rooted in, but divergent from, Bolshevik novyi byt campaigns and Stalinist kul'turnost efforts, Soviet authorities actively sought to craft productive male citizens of a modern mold freed of the rough and coarse habits associated with working-class and village masculinities. Many of men targeted in these campaigns fell short of these stated aims. Instead, they pursued and produced their own images of masculinity outside of these official reconstructive efforts. Thus, this dissertation places malleable images of masculinity at the intersection of post-Stalinist politics, economics, material culture, and sexuality by analyzing a wide range of recently declassified Komsomol archival documents, letters to the Supreme Soviet, Soviet state records, published memoirs, newspapers, and literature.

Marriage in New Mexico, and indeed in all of colonial Spanish America, was significantly influenced by Spanish ideals of faith, honor, virtue and race. While it has long been argued that such ideals were handed down to the American colonies from the Iberian Peninsula unaltered, more recent scholarship asserts that the honor code, rather than a monolithic concept to be either accepted or rejected, was contextually determined and significantly influenced by socio-economic milieus and geo-political circumstances. The contingent nature of the honor code and its influence on the institution of marriage clearly emerges in an investigation of colonial New Mexico, a region that for its peripheral position in the Viceroyalty of New Spain has suffered from a lack of deep historical analysis.Using prenuptial investigations, prenuptial disputes and deflowerment cases from the Archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe conducted between 1681 and 1730, as well as administrative records from the Archivo General de Indias, I challenge current assumptions regarding what constituted an appropriate marriage partner in this remote/distant area of the Spanish Borderlands. The "voices" I capture from these investigations allow me to analyze concerns regarding free will, sexuality, legitimacy, honor, and race, and how these informed marriage choice in colonial New Mexico fifty years after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Moreover, by examining the mechanisms Spanish colonists used to contract their preferred marriages-sometimes despite familial opposition-I challenge current assumptions regarding the importance of free will, what constituted an appropriate marriage partner in this remote area of the Spanish Empire, and detail the ways the inherent flexibility of the sistema de castas was manipulated in this region to buttress the cultural hegemony of the Spanish Empire.

The dissertation examines the role of Polish Catholic domestic workers employed in middle-class Jewish households during the interwar period and the ways that the relationships that developed in the domestic realm influenced decisions to seek or provide aid during the Holocaust. It argues that the relationships that sometimes formed in the domestic realm caused Polish Catholic domestic workers to see their Jewish employers as belonging to their own community of obligation and to sometimes then aid them during the Nazi persecution. In addition, this work examines how middle-class Polish culture was transmitted to Jewish children by their acculturated parents, sometimes via the family's Polish Catholic maid and the ways this maid also familiarized her charges with Polish Catholic peasant culture. This dissertation asserts that this familiarity with Polish culture and the hybrid identities the children of these households sometimes formed was useful in later allowing them to pass as Catholic Poles on the so-called Aryan side if the opportunity was present during the Nazi Occupation period. The dissertation is comprised of two parts. The first examines the prewar period to explore how Polish Catholic women from the countryside made their niches within urban Jewish households, how Polish middle class culture was transmitted to children in acculturated Jewish homes, and to examine how these children then further developed their hybridic Polish Jewish identities while in the public realm, away from the control of their parents and caregivers. The second part of the dissertation examines the initial responses of the domestic workers and their Jewish employers to the Nazi invasion of Poland and the ghettoization of the Jewish population, how it was decided to place Jewish children and families into hiding outside the ghetto, and case studies of children hidden with their former Polish caregivers.
