1. Feller-Kniepmeier, Monika. The rood screen of Magdeburg cathedral and its altar of the holy cross.

Degree: 2012, Freie Universität Berlin

Although the Magdeburg cathedral owes one of the few rood screens that have overcome from middle ages, there has been no scientific investigation so far. This work intends to close this gap. The U-shaped rood screen has a threefold elevation containing wall, balustrade and a zone of pinnacles, the western wall being structured by five ogee arches. On their front sides the walls are decorated by 12 sculptures of saints that are organized according to their importance and have been identified by their attributes. Due to the emphasis of the wall, the integrated image of Christ’s passion and the sequence of saints, the western wall can be interpreted as a retable in stone. Due to the lack of references the rood screen had to be dated by stylistic analysis of its decoration elements and the figures, performing a detailed photographic documentation. As a result a building time lasting from 1446 to the middle of the 1460 years was deduced, including an interruption that lasted for some years. In the course of documentations a tracery invented by Madern Gerthener in Frankfurt/Main called Rutenmaßwerk was detected. A great part of the investigations focused on the altar of the holy cross, which is integrated into the western wall of the rood screen. Considerations and comparison with passion images showed that the message of the image is not clear cut but allows several interpretations that superpose each other. On the other side it is quite clear that interpretations of this type of images are necessarily very subjective. In order to understand the change from Ecclesia to angels collecting Christ’s blood, starting in the 13. Century, an excursus into the history of angel dogmas was performed.
