“Reducing food waste in the household through behaviour change“ is a thesis project for the Design for Interaction Master Programme at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology. The project was carried out at the Interactive Institute in Stockholm. In Sweden 25% of purchased food is thrown away. If people only bought the food they needed and ate the food they bought the amount of food waste would undoubtedly sink. This thesis looks at what role design can play in changing people’s consumption behaviour. The focus of this thesis were skills and knowledge on how to treat food. Skills and knowledge around food were seen as having the potential to contribute to the effort of reducing food waste. Three skill domains were defined as food management, storage knowledge, and the art of cooking, that were used as a means to structure the large and diverse group of skills present when dealing with food. In the course of the project “food skills“ was defined more narrow as insights into one’s own routine behaviour. It was believed that this insight would lead to a more skilful way of dealing with food as people would understand what they had to improve. A practice oriented approach was used in order to gain an understanding of current practices and the underlying elements that determined their form and about what could cause changes in practices. Instead of pre-defining how people should behave, people were viewed as co-creators of practices giving them an active role in which they were asked to find solutions for the food waste problem. This was done because it was believed that the best practice could vary greatly between different people and that new practices had to be developed to fit a modern sustainable life style. These new practices were yet to be discovered. The product was to stimulate and trigger people to reflect on their current routines and experiment with new ones. In order to facilitate reflecting and experimenting it was decided to develop a group activity and to include a game aspects. A participatory design approach was used during the product development. Participatory design includes consumers in the design process in order to collect qualitative consumer data at an early stage in the product development. Due to this approach insights could be gained on how consumers react and deal with the idea to experiment with new practices and what kind of insights they gain by that. How group dynamics work in this setting and what kind of a group people feel comfortable sharing the experience of reflecting on their routines and exploring new ways of behaving is another phenomenon that could be explored thanks to the participatory design approach. The final concept is the service “The Food Challenge” that is a collection of tasks that are meant to engage people in doing things differently. The workplace environment is changing; office buildings no longer have a desk for everyone, people work from different places at different times, people become tacit workers, people work more individualistic and work life and home life start blending together. The challenge is to understand more about the nature and value of informal and spontaneous communicative activity and seeing whether technology could be fruitfully employed to aid it. Research is conducted amongst consultants of Microsoft who work with ‘Het Nieuwe Werken’ at Microsoft Netherlands to understand what they miss when they don’t have informal encounters. The design vision is to use the serendipity of face-to-face ad hoc meetings and surprise employees with context information of others while they are not especially looking for it. The design is an interactive wall which recognizes a passer-by and together with the movement of the person other contexts are shown of people who might be interesting for the passer-by. More context information is revealed when the person touches a context. Connections of the context are shown When there are two people standing in front of the wall correlations are shown. The passer-by can make a coffee request or choose to be reminded later about this other person. Serendipity plays an important role and the concept doesn’t distract the employees too much from their work. A test is setup at Microsoft to see how people respond to this wall and to let them criticize the value. The test showed that it is a good way to improve the cohesion of employees physically instead of virtually. This concept does support general awareness and the possibility to get in touch with (new) people. Certain aspects which still need to be investigated; the graphical appearance, amount of information, more interactive elements to navigate through contexts and possibilities for immediate actions. Climate change is already happening and represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing the planet. The warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level. To stop climate change, scientists have set as an upper safe limit for atmospheric CO2 that of 350ppm (parts per million C02). In other words, the level to which we need to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere if we want to avoid the catastrophic climate effects. The bad news is that the atmospheric carbon has already reached 383ppm, and shows an increasing rate. Hence, instant action is required. Carbon-neutral prosperity is possible, but requires bold actions from all. A good start to do so can be from our own homes. Residential energy consumption is the second most rapidly growing area of global energy use after transport, contributing to total energy use generally between 15% and 20%. The adopted policies and measures to cut back greenhouse gasses attributed to households, aim to do so mainly by: increasing the use of renewable energy (solar, wind, biomass, geothermal) or by improving the energy efficiency of houses and households. The latter, is the focus of this project. If we want to improve the energy efficiency of households we have to deal also with the consumer’s behaviour as a significant determinant on the household’s environmental impact. To address this issue better, a qualitative research was carried out, with eight households in the city of Delft. By applying conventional ethnographic methods such as interviews, observations, probes and focus groups, the research aimed to understand people better, come closer and engage them during the whole process. A pilot study, pinpointed the need to bring the consumers closer to their daily practices, give them insights on their effects and help them develop a mental model about energy. To look for possible solutions, a follow up study was carried out, providing energy meters to the participants and probing them to interact with the meters and with their neighbors/participants. The study resulted to three key insights for changing energy consumption: Transparency, Feel in Control and Collaboration. The first is well addressed by smart meters, which transform energy from invisible to transparent, raising general awareness to people. However, what do people do, after they get aware of their energy consumption is often overlooked. During the user studies with the energy meter, participants’ interest faded after 2-3 weeks. Although they were might still checking the energy meter, they did not find the indications competent enough. What they needed was to feel more powerful and certain about the choices they make and the actions they take to reduce their environmental footprint in daily life.
