1. den Ouden, Mirre. Every steps counts: daily activities of nursing home residents and the role of nursing staff.

Degree: 2018, Datawyse / Universitaire Pers Maastricht

This dissertation examines the daily activities of nursing home residents and the role played by nurses and caregivers. The most common activities are sleeping, watching TV and doing nothing. Household activities are extremely rare, as nearly half of these daily tasks are performed by nurses and caregivers. An intervention was developed (DAIly NURSE) to help nurses and caregivers encourage nursing home residents to engage in daily activities. DAIly NURSE consists of policy, education and coaching and aims to raise awareness of one's own behaviour through video recordings and other methods. Nursing home residents seem to be more involved in daily activities after the implementation of DAIly NURSE. Advisors/Committee Members: Hamers, Jan, Zwakhalen, Sandra, Meijers, Judith, RS: CAPHRI - R1 - Ageing and Long-Term Care, Promovendi PHPC, Health Services Research.

2. Hochstenbach, Laura Maria Josephina. Self-management support for outpatients with cancer pain: development, feasibility and impact of an eHealth intervention.

Degree: 2017, Datawyse / Universitaire Pers Maastricht

Pain is a common and severe problem in cancer patients. Current care regimens are often insufficient in terms of controlling pain in the home environment. This dissertation describes the development and evaluation of an eHealth intervention in cooperation with patients, care professionals, researchers and companies (IDEE and Sananet). The intervention comprises the following aspects: a house visit, an app for patients, a web application for nurses and follow-up actions. Patients register pain, related symptoms and medication usage on a daily basis by using an app. They receive feedback and information. A website allows nurses to access the data and monitor their patients at a distance. Based on the patient’s level of pain, they give support and communicate with the treating physician, the pain management specialist or the palliative care consultation team. The aim of the intervention is to support self-management and contribute to pain reduction and an improved quality of life. Evaluations confirm that the eHealth intervention is implementable and of great value in daily practice. Advisors/Committee Members: de Witte, Lucas, Zwakhalen, Sandra, van Everdingen - van den Beuken, Maria, RS: CAPHRI - R1 - Ageing and Long-Term Care, Promovendi PHPC, Health Services Research.

3. de Boer, Bram Sybrandus. Living at a green care farm: An innovative alternative for regular care in nursing homes for people with dementia.

Degree: 2017, Datawyse / Universitaire Pers Maastricht

This dissertation shows that care farms offering 24/7 nursing home care to people with dementia are a useful addition to the current range of nursing homes. More than 16,000 observations were carried out in various types of nursing homes (care farms, small-scale homes, regular departments). These observations showed that people living at care farms are more active, have more social contacts and go outdoors more often compared to people living in regular nursing homes. These factors have an impact on people’s quality of life. No differences were found in the quality of care measured. Informal carers of people living at care farms were more enthusiastic about the physical environment and atmosphere, and the opportunities to carry out activities. In their opinion, care offered by care farms was more personalised than care offered by other types of nursing homes. Advisors/Committee Members: Hamers, Jan, Verbeek, Hilde, Zwakhalen, Sandra, Health Services Research, RS: CAPHRI - R1 - Ageing and Long-Term Care, Promovendi PHPC.
