1. Bommarito, Nicolas P. Inner Virtue.

Degree: PhD, Philosophy, 2014, Brown University

An intuitive way to think about what it is to be a good person is in terms of doing good deeds. Indeed, many contemporary thinkers see a good person as simply someone who is likely to engage in certain behaviors like donating to charity. There is, however, much to being a good person that is independent of both intentions and overt behavior. It does not seem out of reach for someone with complete body paralysis to be a good person in many ways; such a person can have the virtue of facing their life with courage or the vice of harboring extreme resentment towards others. I develop an account of how various mental states like pleasures, emotions, and attention can be virtuous or vicious independently of any connection to behavioral action. This account explains how such different phenomena can count as virtuous or vicious and in doing so shows that there is more to moral evaluations of persons than evaluating their behaviors and intentions. Advisors/Committee Members: Arpaly, Nomy (Director), Estlund, David (Reader), Garfield, Jay (Reader).
