The study examined persuasion techniques perceived or practiced by first year college students to form sexual intimacy. It targets to study samples from school of commerce at Addis Ababa University and attempted to identify sex differences in persuasion techniques. Statistical differences were also examined among short term and long term romantic relationship types. A descriptive research design was selected on the basis of the nature of the research objectives. School of commerce was selected on convenience and 191 male and female study samples were participated in the study. Data were analyzed quantitatively. Result revealed that males practiced or perceived more number of persuasion techniques than females when initiating sexual intimacy. However, a number of these persuasion techniques were shared by both sexes. The study revealed that males and females are different in the overall persuasion techniques perceived or practiced to initiate sexual intimacy. Statistical differences were also observed in the overall persuasion techniques perceived or practiced among first year students who are interested in short term and long term romantic relationships. First year students who favored short term romantic relationships perceived or practiced the overall persuasion techniques higher than students who preferred long term romantic types. Male students tend to significantly favor short term romantic interests than female students do. The study recommends that the study population should be targeted for intervention and prevention efforts of sexual risk factors. It was suggested as well to explore more persuasion techniques which are effective in persuading the opposite sex considering other sub-cultures and age groups Advisors/Committee Members: Yekoyealem Dessie (PhD) (advisor).
