▼ Transitional ministry is where a minister temporarily enters a church that is experiencing instability following but not necessarily caused by the unexpected departure of the previous pastor. This study has attempted to explore the experience within the context of a Christian denomination that has a Congregationalist polity. Empirical research of this phenomenon is extremely limited, therefore elements of grounded theory have been utilised to understand the situation transitional ministers entered, the goals of their ministry, the approaches to leadership they brought to the role, and the processes they adopted to progress the church.
Six transitional ministers were interviewed to gain rich, relevant data. Through the iterative processes of grounded theory, concepts emerged through open, axial and selective coding, which allowed for the development of theory from the substantiated contexts of the participants. This resulted in the generation of theoretical propositions, along with a model that seeks to explain the phenomenon.
Data analysis indicated that transitional ministry environments are preceded by conflict, organizational dysfunction and/or a loss of direction, which leads to financial and numeric decline of the congregation, such that it threatens the future viability of the church. This results in denominational staff being asked to intervene, which in turn leads to the appointment of the transitional minister.
The core category that emerged through the research is that transitional ministry is concerned with the restoration of health to the congregation. To achieve this, a philosophy of pastoral leadership including instilling hope, listening, learning, building trust, serving, engaging, envisioning, taking decisions, teaching and communicating are identified as being important.
Due to the nature of the congregational crisis, five different processes are then identified to assist transitional ministers achieve their objective. (1) They enter their churches by actively affirming their parishioners and offering hope for the future of the church. (2) They establish structures that ensure the church is operational. (3) They identify and resolve underlying conflict, and/or dysfunction.
(4) Having sought to facilitate healing within the congregation, they move to working with the church to envision its future. (5) They establish a Call Committee that recruits and nominates to the congregation the name of its next settled pastor.
Findings of this study were then compared with literature and research that focussed on leadership, organizational development, and ecclesiastical polity.
While this exploratory study is confined to the context of transition in a dynamic environment within the autonomous church, the model and propositions it has generated may offer some small measure of insight for religious practitioners of change management. At the same time, it may provide a basis for future empirical research in the specific area of transitional ministry but also the leadership of change…

▼ The concept of values is multifaceted and one that is closely related to organisational culture constructs. Values have been conceptualised at multiple levels - individual, leader, social group, institution, inter-organisation and national - and a considerable number of values frameworks exist, but not within a single model. Little research has yet been done on group values - what they are, how they are formed and what roles they play in organisational or social group settings, particularly during periods of organisational change.
The current study investigated four levels of values that may exist in an organisation - individual, leader, group and organisational, the congruencies between them and how these values and congruencies influenced individual reactions to organisational change. Through an interpretive single case study design, changes in an organisation (a merger, centralisation of some functions and a change of organisational values) were analysed in relation to the values of employees and managers. A framework of values was developed that presents insights into the four levels of values, the relations between them and how these values shape organisational members’ perceptions of change. A conflict in values at middle management level was found. Moreover, the change in organisational values did not result in changes in individual values.
The framework is a contribution to knowledge as it integrates different levels of values in a single model and applies them to organisational change. Additionally, the study presents new perspectives on the sets of values that guide perceptions of change processes and outcomes, and analyses implications for practitioners. The findings of the research provide new insights into why individual values may not change. Another contribution is the salience of group-member values congruence during change. A final key insight is the role complexities that face middle managers during change and the values that they revert to when faced with values conflicts.

▼ In a modern industrialised world, many employees work in an open-plan office environment. Therefore, the effect of the open-plan office on interpersonal relationships and worker wellbeing is important to investigate.
This study examines the lived experiences of employees who work in open-plan office environments. The academic literature illustrates how the open-plan office environment impacts on interpersonal relationships and worker wellbeing; suggesting that the open-plan office environment influences human behaviour and interaction. The positive aspects of open-plan office layouts are that they increase worker visibility, communication, collaboration, team cohesion and worker engagement. Other research outlines the negative impact of working in open-plan offices; factors such as noise, distraction and privacy issues.
Seven people were interviewed for this study, participants were recruited from my personal and professional networks. Interviews were face to face and semi-structured in design. Interviews were transcribed, and the data was analysed through thematic analysis.
Themes were generated during analysis to answer the research questions:
1. How does the open-plan office environment impact on employee interpersonal relationships?
2. What are the implications of open-plan office environments for employee wellbeing?
Participants within this study generally felt positive about working in an open-plan office, and reported healthy working relationships. On the other hand, participants were often distracted by overhearing their co-workers talk and had preferences for a quieter environment.
Through the findings, this research has provided insight into the interpersonal relationships and wellbeing of workers in open-plan office environments and recommendations for future research are provided.

▼ Entrepreneurial passion has been regarded as the heart of business venturing for centuries. Recently, it has been a topic of interest in the academic community. Over the past decades, there has been an increasing number of publications in this area. However, the extant research is relatively large, heterogeneous, and patchy. Yet, little effort has been made to integrate the findings of those studies and assess the current state of the knowledge. Therefore, we are left with a fragmented, rather than a nuanced, holistic understanding of entrepreneurial passion.
This study aims to conduct a systematic review of the literature on the neglected area of passion in entrepreneurship. Particularly, it seeks to synthesise the previous academic findings, highlight the research gaps, and proposes future research agenda to extend the body of literature in three aspects: the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial passion. The two interrelated research questions are: (1) what has prior research found regarding the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial passion?; and (2) what are the future research opportunities regarding the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial passion?
In order to achieve the research objectives, a systematic literature review was employed as the research method. A total of 61 peer-reviewed journal articles were obtained from an electronic search in two large international databases (EBSCO and SCOPUS) in a rigorous and systematic manner. In terms of the method for analysing data, this study adopted a thematic synthesis to identify the literature themes and weave them together. It also applied framework synthesis to build a framework of the interrelationships between the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial passion.
An analysis of the results of the review suggests that: (1) the targets of entrepreneurs’ passion are directed toward four specific domains: entrepreneurial activities, venture-related objects, stakeholders associated with the firm, and concepts (idea, cause or goal); (2) there are four drivers of entrepreneurial passion: entrepreneurial education, engagement in entrepreneurship, individual differences, and role models; and (3) entrepreneurial passion leads to two main consequences: micro (individual) and meso (firm-related) outcomes. Based on these findings, future research avenues to extend and enrich the literature were proposed accordingly.
This research has made several contributions. Theoretically, it provides thematic insights on the targets, causes, and consequences of entrepreneurial passion, and illustrates the interconnection between these three aspects through a framework. It also identifies gaps and prospective lines of inquiries. Regarding practical contributions, entrepreneurs could learn about the drivers of passion in order to spark and sustain such feeling throughout their entrepreneurial career. The findings of this review could advance their understanding of the adverse effects of passion, and thus learn how to…
