Abstract There is considerable evidence to lead us to believe that students are not being prepared to adequately cope with the mathematical demands of being an adult in today's society. In a world where math is all around us, the ability to reason with numbers is invaluable. Whether it is with financial decisions, health decisions, or political decisions, better reasoning can lead to better decision making. This paper aims to give some background about quantitative reasoning and discuss the development of a college level quantitative reasoning course that is both mathematically rigorous and relevant to the real world.
